Refurbished iPad 7th Generation UK: Is It Worth It in 2026?

The refurbished iPad 7th generation starts at £104.00, but the newer 8th gen Wi-Fi costs £5.00 less grade for grade. Here is the price, grade and storage maths, what iPadOS 18 means for your apps, and the one variant where the 7th gen wins: Wi-Fi + Cellular.

A refurbished iPad 7th generation still handles streaming, browsing, homework, video calls and Apple Pencil notes on a 10.2-inch screen, but in October 2026 it is rarely the smartest 10.2-inch iPad to buy. At The Tech Gadgets the 7th gen Wi-Fi 32GB in Very Good grade costs £104.00 (checked 5 October 2026), while the newer iPad 8th generation in the same grade and storage costs £99.00. That is £104.00 − £99.00 = £5.00 more for an older chip and an older software ceiling.

The exception is mobile data. The Wi-Fi + Cellular iPad 7th gen starts at £109.00, which is £10.00 less than the 8th gen Wi-Fi + Cellular at £119.00. Whichever model you choose, the biggest limitation is software: the iPad 7th generation stops at iPadOS 18, so it can't install iPadOS 26 or iPadOS 27, and some newer apps won't install on it.

iPad 7th generation: the quick decision

  • Best for: a household or student iPad for video, web, email, reading and handwritten notes with Apple Pencil (1st generation), with the option of a full-size Smart Keyboard. It is also a sensible way to get a budget iPad with its own mobile data, because the 7th gen Wi-Fi + Cellular undercuts the 8th gen by £10.00.
  • Choose something else when: you only need Wi-Fi (the 8th gen is £5.00 cheaper grade for grade), an app you rely on already needs a newer iPadOS, you want the current iPadOS (only the iPad 9th generation and newer run iPadOS 27), or you want Apple Intelligence, which none of these budget iPads supports.
  • Check before buying: the Compatibility line on the App Store page of every app you depend on, whether 32GB will hold your downloads, and whether you really need Wi-Fi + Cellular.

Is the iPad 7th generation still worth buying in 2026?

Only in specific cases. The iPad 7th generation still runs everyday apps on iPadOS 18 and shares its 10.2-inch screen, Apple Pencil support and Smart Keyboard support with the 8th generation. But the Wi-Fi model costs £5.00 more than an equivalent 8th gen here, so it makes most sense as the Wi-Fi + Cellular version, which is £10.00 cheaper than the 8th gen equivalent.

The good parts are real. This was the model that moved Apple's standard iPad from a 9.7-inch to a 10.2-inch screen, and Apple's launch announcement said it brought support for the full-size Smart Keyboard to that iPad line for the first time. You also get Touch ID, stereo speakers, a 3.5 mm headphone jack and the same 2160 x 1620 Retina resolution that the 8th and 9th generations use.

The dated parts matter more in 2026. The A10 Fusion chip is the same chip Apple used in the 2018 iPad 6th generation, so the 7th gen brought a bigger screen rather than a faster processor. The front camera takes 1.2MP photos, charging is through Lightning rather than USB-C, mobile data tops out at 4G, and Apple's comparison page shows the display is neither laminated nor True Tone. None of that stops it streaming a film, but it explains why a newer iPad at a lower price wins for Wi-Fi buyers.

Which iPadOS does the iPad 7th generation run, and will your apps work?

The iPad 7th generation's final major version is iPadOS 18. Apple's iPadOS 26 compatibility list starts at the iPad 8th generation, and iPadOS 27, released on 14 September 2026, starts at the 9th generation. Apple still released iPadOS 18.7.10 for the 7th gen on 17 August 2026, but it doesn't publish an end date for those security updates.

So the iPad keeps working, on a security-only branch. Apple's security releases page shows six iPadOS 18.7 updates for it between December 2025 and August 2026. You won't get new iPadOS features, and you shouldn't assume security fixes will continue for any set period.

Apps are the bigger day-to-day question. Every App Store listing shows a Compatibility line with the minimum iPadOS version the app needs. On the UK App Store on 5 October 2026, the current versions of Netflix, BBC iPlayer, YouTube, Disney+, WhatsApp, Zoom, Google Classroom, Microsoft Word and Excel all listed iPadOS 18 or lower as their minimum, as did the Barclays, HSBC UK, Lloyds and NatWest apps, so they install on the 7th gen. Monzo's listing showed iPhone only.

The catch is that Netflix, Word and Excel already ask for iPadOS 18.0 as their minimum, so the 7th gen sits right on the line. If those developers raise the minimum again, it will stop getting their updates; the App Store can sometimes offer the last compatible version, but that isn't guaranteed. Check anything else you rely on before ordering. For model numbers and dimensions, see our iPad 7th generation screen size, specs and iPadOS guide.

iPad 7th generation price: grade and storage maths

Here is every iPad 7th generation price listed at The Tech Gadgets, by grade, storage and connectivity (checked 5 October 2026).

Grade Wi-Fi 32GB Wi-Fi 128GB Wi-Fi + Cellular 32GB Wi-Fi + Cellular 128GB
Very Good £104.00 £124.00 £109.00 £134.00
Excellent £114.00 £134.00 £119.00 £144.00
Like New £124.00 £144.00 £129.00 £154.00

The steps are regular. Excellent adds £10.00 over Very Good and Like New adds £20.00. Moving from the iPad 7th generation 32GB to the 128GB adds £20.00 on Wi-Fi (£124.00 − £104.00) and £25.00 on Wi-Fi + Cellular (£134.00 − £109.00). Adding mobile data costs £5.00 at 32GB (£109.00 − £104.00) and £10.00 at 128GB (£134.00 − £124.00).

One overlap stands out: a Like New 32GB Wi-Fi costs £124.00, the same as a Very Good 128GB Wi-Fi. As grades are cosmetic only, four times the storage is usually the better use of that money.

Which grade should you choose?

Choose Very Good if the iPad will live in a case or be used by a child, because the grade describes looks only and the listing states every grade works fully. Pay £10.00 more for Excellent, or £20.00 more for Like New, if the iPad is a gift or you'll use it without a case.

The listing describes the grades like this: Like New shows little or no sign of use, Excellent may have light marks, and Very Good may have visible marks that do not affect use.

Is the iPad 7th generation 32GB enough?

For streaming, browsing, email and a handful of apps, usually yes. Apple's specification page says a standard setup uses roughly 10GB to 13GB for iPadOS and the preinstalled apps, which leaves around 19GB to 22GB of a 32GB iPad. Choose 128GB for offline downloads, games, photos or several school apps.

If you'll download series for long journeys or let a child install games, the extra £20.00 for the iPad 7th generation 128GB is money well spent.

iPad 7th gen vs iPad 8th gen: why the newer iPad can cost less

The 7th and 8th generations look almost identical: the same 10.2-inch screen, the same outer size, the same cameras, Touch ID, headphone jack, Apple Pencil (1st generation) and Smart Keyboard support. The 8th gen has the newer A12 Bionic chip and a later software ceiling, iPadOS 26. Yet on Wi-Fi models, the older 7th gen is the dearer of the two here.

This table compares Very Good prices for both generations at The Tech Gadgets (checked 5 October 2026).

Very Good variant iPad 7th gen iPad 8th gen Difference
Wi-Fi 32GB £104.00 £99.00 7th gen costs £5.00 more
Wi-Fi 128GB £124.00 £119.00 7th gen costs £5.00 more
Wi-Fi + Cellular 32GB £109.00 £119.00 7th gen costs £10.00 less
Wi-Fi + Cellular 128GB £134.00 £144.00 7th gen costs £10.00 less

The same £5.00 gap applies to Excellent and Like New on Wi-Fi, and the same £10.00 saving applies across the Wi-Fi + Cellular grades. So the honest advice splits by connectivity.

  • Choose the 8th gen when you want a Wi-Fi iPad. You pay less for a newer chip and one more major iPadOS version. Our refurbished iPad 8th generation buying guide covers its grades and storage in detail.
  • Choose the 7th gen Wi-Fi + Cellular instead when you need mobile data on a tight budget and your apps run happily on iPadOS 18. The £10.00 saving is real, and the screen, cameras and accessories are the same.
  • Choose the iPad 9th generation when you want the current iPadOS. The refurbished iPad 9th generation starts at £164.00 for Very Good 64GB, £60.00 more than the 7th gen 32GB (£164.00 − £104.00). It runs iPadOS 27 and adds True Tone, the A13 Bionic chip and a 12MP Ultra Wide front camera with Centre Stage. Our 8th vs 9th generation comparison weighs up that step.

The cheaper iPad 6th generation (Very Good 32GB £74.00, so £30.00 less than the 7th gen) uses the same A10 Fusion chip but has a smaller 9.7-inch screen, no Smart Keyboard support and an earlier software ceiling, iPadOS 17.

Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi + Cellular: which 7th gen iPad should you buy?

Buy the Wi-Fi + Cellular 7th gen if you'll use the iPad away from Wi-Fi, for example on trains, in a car or as a sat-nav. It costs £5.00 more than the Wi-Fi model at 32GB Very Good. If you'll mostly stay on home or school Wi-Fi, the Wi-Fi version is enough.

According to Apple's specifications, the Wi-Fi + Cellular model adds Gigabit-class LTE, a nano-SIM tray, eSIM and built-in GPS/GNSS. It is 4G only, with no 5G. The Tech Gadgets lists it as unlocked for any UK network; a data plan isn't included, and Apple notes that not every network supports eSIM.

Without Cellular you can share your phone's connection instead, but the iPad then has no GPS of its own. For a car or commuter iPad, the £109.00 Wi-Fi + Cellular 7th gen is where this older model beats its newer sibling on price.

Who should not buy an iPad 7th generation

  • Wi-Fi-only buyers with no reason to want the 7th gen specifically: the 8th gen is cheaper and newer.
  • Anyone whose banking, school or work app already lists iPadOS 26 or later as its minimum.
  • Buyers who want the iPad to receive new iPadOS features for years. The 9th generation (iPadOS 27) or the iPad (A16) is the better starting point; the A16 Wi-Fi starts at £314.00 for Very Good 128GB.
  • Anyone who wants USB-C charging, Apple Intelligence or Apple Pencil (USB-C).
  • Artists who want a laminated screen, where the glass sits right on top of the image: the 7th gen's display isn't laminated.

Condition, warranty and checks on arrival

These iPads are refurbished UK stock. According to the listing, The Tech Gadgets checks, cleans, resets and tests each iPad before dispatch; it is not an Apple Certified Refurbished product (our Apple Certified Refurbished vs retailer-refurbished explainer is written for iPhones, but the distinction is the same). In the box you get the iPad, a charging cable and protective packaging, with no power adapter.

Every iPad comes with a 12-month warranty from The Tech Gadgets, starting on delivery, covering faults that develop in normal use (not accidental or liquid damage). The listing states at least 85% battery health at dispatch on every grade. You can't check that yourself on this iPad, because Apple only offers a Battery Health screen in Settings on newer models such as the iPad (A16); if the figure matters, ask the team for your unit's reading before ordering. The warranty policy lists battery defects and reduced capacity as exclusions, but the Consumer Rights Act 30-day right to reject still applies.

You also get change-of-mind returns within 30 days if unused and complete (you pay return postage), plus your 14-day right to cancel. The full terms are in the returns and warranty policy, and our explainer on how the warranty and your consumer rights fit together applies to iPads too.

Orders placed by 3pm Monday to Friday are dispatched the same day from Manchester. Every iPad here costs more than £50, so standard delivery (1–3 working days) is free; Special Delivery (next working day) is £9.99. See the dispatch and delivery details for weekend and bank holiday timings.

What to check when your iPad 7th generation arrives

  1. Setup: the iPad should start at Apple's Hello screen. If it shows a “Locked to Owner” screen or asks for someone else's Apple Account, it is still protected by Activation Lock, so stop and contact the team.
  2. Model number: go to Settings, then General, then About, and tap the Model Number to see the A-number. Expect A2197 on Wi-Fi, or A2198 or A2200 on Wi-Fi + Cellular.
  3. Software: in Settings, then General, then Software Update, install the latest iPadOS 18 release offered.
  4. Screen and touch: look at a plain white page and a dark page, and drag an app icon to every corner.
  5. Buttons and sound: test Touch ID, the Home button, volume buttons, both speakers, the headphone jack and both cameras.
  6. Charging and battery: charge with the supplied cable, then use the iPad normally for a few days. There's no battery health readout on this model, so judge it by use: if battery life seems clearly short, contact the team within 30 days.
  7. Cellular models: insert your nano-SIM or set up eSIM and check that mobile data connects.

iPad 7th generation FAQ

How much is an iPad 7th generation in the UK?

At The Tech Gadgets, a refurbished iPad 7th generation Wi-Fi starts at £104.00 for Very Good 32GB, and the 128GB starts at £124.00. Wi-Fi + Cellular starts at £109.00 for 32GB and £134.00 for 128GB. Like New adds £20.00 to each (prices checked 5 October 2026). Compare the Wi-Fi price against the 8th generation before you buy, because the 8th gen Very Good 32GB is £99.00.

Is the iPad 7th generation a 10.2-inch iPad?

Yes. The iPad 7th generation has a 10.2-inch Retina display at 2160 x 1620 pixels, the same size and resolution as the 8th and 9th generations. The body measures 250.6 x 174.1 x 7.5 mm. It replaced the 9.7-inch screen of the 5th and 6th generations, which have a smaller body, so cases made for those older iPads won't fit it.

Does the iPad 7th generation work with the Smart Keyboard?

Yes. Apple's iPad User Guide lists the Smart Keyboard as compatible with the iPad 7th, 8th and 9th generations, the iPad Air (3rd generation) and the iPad Pro 10.5-inch. It connects through the Smart Connector on the side of the iPad, so there's nothing to pair or switch on. The keyboard is sold separately. Bluetooth keyboards also work if you prefer a different layout.

Which Apple Pencil works with the iPad 7th generation?

Only Apple Pencil (1st generation). Apple's compatibility list doesn't include the iPad 7th generation for Apple Pencil (2nd generation), Apple Pencil (USB-C) or Apple Pencil Pro. The 1st generation Pencil pairs and charges through the iPad's Lightning port, and it's sold separately. It suits handwritten notes, marking up PDFs and simple drawing.

Can the iPad 7th generation update to iPadOS 26?

No. Apple's iPadOS 26 compatibility list starts at the iPad 8th generation, so the 7th gen stays on iPadOS 18. Its most recent release is iPadOS 18.7.10, published on 17 August 2026. It also can't run iPadOS 27, which needs an iPad 9th generation or newer. Apple doesn't publish an end date for iPadOS 18 security updates.

Is a refurbished iPad 7th gen unlocked?

The Wi-Fi model has no SIM, so there's nothing to lock. The Wi-Fi + Cellular model is listed as unlocked and working with any UK network, using a nano-SIM or eSIM. Both are reset before dispatch, ready to set up with your own Apple Account. A data plan isn't included with the Cellular model.

Does a refurbished iPad 7th generation come with a charger?

It comes with a charging cable but no power adapter. The listing describes the box contents as the iPad, a charging cable and protective packaging. Apple sold this model new with a USB power adapter in the box, so a refurbished unit differs here. The listing doesn't say whether the cable ends in USB-A or USB-C, so check the cable before you buy a mains adapter for it. The iPad charges through its Lightning port.

Is the iPad 7th gen good for a child or for school?

For video, reading apps, browser-based homework and Apple Pencil handwriting, it does the job. Check the school's apps first, because some learning platforms set a minimum iPadOS version. A Very Good grade in a rugged case is the sensible value choice. On Wi-Fi, though, the 8th gen does all of this for £5.00 less, with a newer chip.

Verdict: should you buy a refurbished iPad 7th generation?

For a Wi-Fi iPad, no: the 8th generation costs £5.00 less grade for grade and gives you a newer chip and iPadOS 26. For a Wi-Fi + Cellular iPad on a tight budget, yes: the 7th gen from £109.00 saves £10.00 over the 8th gen Cellular, and it shares the same screen, cameras, Pencil and Smart Keyboard support. Just check your apps against iPadOS 18 first.

Buy something else if you need the current iPadOS, Apple Intelligence or USB-C.
