Apple Certified Refurbished vs Third-Party Refurbished iPhone (UK)

What Apple's Certified Refurbished iPhone programme includes, which models Apple's UK store actually lists, and how it compares with third-party refurbished iPhones on battery, warranty, returns and price.

Apple Certified Refurbished iPhones are refurbished by Apple, fitted with a new battery and a new outer shell, packed in a new white box with accessories, and covered by Apple's one-year limited warranty. Third-party refurbished iPhones are refurbished by independent businesses, keep their existing shell and usually their existing battery, and are sold in cosmetic grades. Apple's version is closer to new and costs more; third-party refurbished costs less and covers far more models. This guide compares the two on what you actually get, what you pay and when each one makes sense, using Apple's UK store as checked on 2 October 2026.

What is Apple Certified Refurbished?

Apple Certified Refurbished is Apple's own programme for selling pre-owned Apple products that it has refurbished and tested. On its UK site, Apple says every product completes a refurbishment process that includes full functional testing, and that refurbished iOS devices come with a new battery and outer shell. Apple sells them through the Certified Refurbished section of apple.com/uk, at a lower price than new.

According to Apple's "Why Refurbished" page, each Apple Certified Refurbished product includes:

  • Apple replacement parts as needed, and a device that has been thoroughly cleaned and inspected.
  • For iPhone and other iOS devices, a new battery and a new outer shell.
  • All accessories and cables, plus the operating system.
  • A brand-new white box.
  • Apple's standard one-year limited warranty, with the option to buy AppleCare products for extra cover.
  • Free delivery and returns, with free next-day delivery on in-stock items ordered by 7pm.

Apple's UK online store gives you 14 days from receiving a product to return it, as set out in its sales and refunds policy. Refurbished iPhones are listed as SIM-free.

Which iPhones does Apple sell refurbished in the UK?

No iPhone 14 or earlier, no iPhone 16 Plus, no iPhone 16 Pro and no iPhone 16e were listed that day. Apple's refurbished stock changes frequently, so the range on any given day can be wider or narrower.

What does "third-party refurbished" mean for an iPhone?

A third-party refurbished iPhone has been tested, cleaned, data-wiped and graded by an independent business rather than by Apple. The phone keeps its existing outer shell, so it is sold in cosmetic grades that describe visible wear. The battery is usually the existing one, sold with a stated minimum battery health, unless the seller says it has been replaced. The warranty comes from the seller, not Apple.

At The Tech Gadgets, for example, iPhones are refurbished in-house, not by Apple. Each phone is tested, cleaned, factory reset, signed out of the previous owner's Apple Account with Activation Lock off, and unlocked for all UK networks. Grades are Like New, Excellent, Very Good and Fair, and product pages state at least 85% battery health on Like New, Excellent and Very Good, measured at dispatch. Our guide to refurbished iPhone condition grades explains what each grade looks like in practice.

How much cheaper is a third-party refurbished iPhone?

For the models both sell, a third-party refurbished iPhone is usually noticeably cheaper than Apple's refurbished price, because you are not paying for a new battery and shell. The gap depends on grade and storage, so compare the exact same capacity, and remember that the lowest "from" price is normally the most worn grade.

Model
iPhone 15
iPhone 15 Pro
iPhone 15 Pro Max
iPhone 16
iPhone 16 Pro Max

The Tech Gadgets prices vary by grade, storage and colour: Like New costs the most, then Excellent, then Very Good, and Fair is the cheapest. The comparison is not like-for-like on condition: Apple's price includes a new battery and new shell, while a third-party price reflects the grade you choose.

Battery: the biggest real difference

The battery is where Apple Certified Refurbished and third-party refurbished differ most in day-to-day use. Apple fits a new battery to every refurbished iPhone. A third-party refurbished iPhone normally keeps a used battery with a stated minimum health, and some sellers exclude the battery from their warranty. If battery life is your top priority, that difference may be worth paying for.

Apple's own figures help put a used battery in context. Apple says batteries in iPhone 14 models and earlier are designed to retain 80 per cent of their capacity when new at 500 complete charge cycles under ideal conditions, and batteries in iPhone 15 models at 1,000 complete charge cycles. An iPhone 15 at 85% or more therefore has meaningful life left, but it is not a new battery.

Be clear about warranty cover too. The Tech Gadgets' 12-month warranty does not cover battery defects or reduced battery capacity. The practical safeguard is to check Settings, then Battery, then Battery Health as soon as the phone arrives, and use the 30-day returns window if the reading is below the stated minimum. If the battery wears later, Apple offers a paid battery service for out-of-warranty iPhones.

AppleCare, warranty and repairs

Apple says all Apple Certified Refurbished products are covered by its one-year limited warranty, and that you have the option of buying AppleCare for more coverage. A third-party refurbished iPhone is covered by the seller's warranty instead. Before relying on any extra cover for a third-party phone, check eligibility directly with the provider, because it depends on the provider's own terms.

One Apple rule is worth knowing for any used iPhone. Apple says that if a device contains a previously used part from a different device that was protected by Activation Lock when the part was removed, that part is ineligible for service under the Apple Limited Warranty or an AppleCare plan. Buying from a seller that removes Activation Lock and knows where its parts come from protects you here.

When Apple Certified Refurbished makes sense

  • You want an iPhone 15 or 16 model that Apple currently lists, and you want it as close to new as possible.
  • A new battery matters to you, for example because you plan to keep the phone for several years.
  • You want Apple's warranty and the option of AppleCare.
  • You want a new box and all accessories included.
  • You are happy with a 14-day returns window and Apple's price.

When third-party refurbished makes sense

  • You want a model Apple does not currently sell refurbished, such as iPhone 11, 12, 13 or 14, iPhone 16e, iPhone 16 Plus or iPhone 16 Pro.
  • Your budget is below Apple's refurbished starting price.
  • You are comfortable with light cosmetic wear in exchange for a lower price.
  • You prefer a longer returns window: 30 days at The Tech Gadgets versus 14 days at Apple.
  • You accept a used battery with a stated minimum health rather than a new one.

For example, at the time of writing (October 2026), The Tech Gadgets listed the refurbished iPhone 13, the iPhone 14 and the iPhone 16e, none of which Apple's UK refurbished store listed on 2 October 2026. Check today's prices on their product pages. If budget is the deciding factor, see our guide to budget refurbished iPhones, or the best refurbished iPhone to buy in 2026 for a model-by-model view.

Is it worth paying extra for Apple refurbished?

Paying Apple's refurbished price is worth it if a new battery, a new shell and Apple's warranty matter more to you than the saving. On the models both sell, Apple's refurbished price is usually noticeably higher than The Tech Gadgets' price for the same model. If you would put that money towards a newer model or more storage instead, third-party refurbished is usually better value.

A useful way to decide: estimate how long you will keep the phone. If it is three years or more, a new battery has real value and Apple's option looks stronger. If you upgrade every year or two, a third-party Excellent or Very Good grade with 85%+ battery health will usually serve you well for less. Our article on whether a refurbished iPhone is worth buying covers the wider decision.

Checks to make on any refurbished iPhone, Apple or third-party

  1. Battery health: Settings, then Battery, then Battery Health. Apple refurbished should show a new battery; a third-party phone should meet the stated minimum.
  2. Unlocked: Settings, then General, then About. Apple says "No SIM restrictions" next to Network Provider Lock means the iPhone is unlocked.
  3. Activation Lock: set the phone up with your own Apple Account. If it asks for someone else's Apple Account, contact the seller immediately.
  4. Cosmetic condition: compare the screen and body with the grade description in daylight.
  5. Function: test calls, mobile data, Wi-Fi, cameras, speakers, microphone, Face ID or Touch ID, and charging.

Frequently asked questions

Do Apple refurbished iPhones come with a new battery?

Yes. Apple's UK site says refurbished iOS devices come with a new battery and a new outer shell. That is the main difference from most third-party refurbished iPhones, which usually keep the existing battery and are sold with a stated minimum battery health instead.

How long is the warranty on an Apple Certified Refurbished iPhone?

Apple includes its standard one-year limited warranty with every Apple Certified Refurbished product, and says you can buy AppleCare products for additional coverage. Third-party refurbished iPhones carry the seller's warranty instead, which at The Tech Gadgets is 12 months with stated exclusions, including battery defects and reduced capacity.

Are Apple refurbished iPhones unlocked?

Apple lists its refurbished iPhones as SIM-free. To confirm any iPhone is unlocked, go to Settings, then General, then About: Apple says "No SIM restrictions" next to Network Provider Lock means it is unlocked. Third-party refurbished iPhones from The Tech Gadgets are unlocked for all UK networks.

Why can't I find older iPhones on Apple's refurbished store?

Apple only lists the refurbished stock it has available. On 2 October 2026, its UK store listed iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 models only, with nothing from iPhone 14 or earlier. Stock changes frequently, but if you want an older model, a third-party refurbisher is usually the practical option.

What is the return period for Apple refurbished in the UK?

Apple's UK online store policy gives you 14 days from receiving a product to tell Apple you want to return it. The Tech Gadgets gives 30 days from delivery on refurbished phones, with faulty, wrong or damaged items to be reported within 3 days.

Is Apple Certified Refurbished the same as "Apple refurbished" on other sites?

No. Apple Certified Refurbished means Apple itself refurbished the device and sells it with Apple's warranty. A phone described as a refurbished Apple iPhone on another website has been refurbished by that seller or a supplier, not by Apple, unless the seller says otherwise. Check who refurbished it before you buy.
