The iPad 7th generation has a 10.2-inch Retina screen, measured diagonally, with 2160 x 1620 pixels at 264 ppi. The body is 250.6 mm tall, 174.1 mm wide and 7.5 mm thick, and it weighs 483 g (Wi-Fi) or 493 g (Wi-Fi + Cellular). Apple released it in September 2019 as model A2197 (Wi-Fi) and A2200 or A2198 (Wi-Fi + Cellular), and its final major software version is iPadOS 18.
That last point matters most if you're buying one now. The iPad 7th gen can't run iPadOS 26 or 27, although Apple released a security update for it, iPadOS 18.7.10, on 17 August 2026. It shares its outer dimensions with the 8th and 9th generations, so most cases and the Smart Keyboard fit all three. At The Tech Gadgets a refurbished 7th gen Wi-Fi starts at £104.00, and the newer 8th gen at £99.00 (both Very Good 32GB, checked 5 October 2026).

iPad 7th generation at a glance
- Best for: owners who want to identify their iPad and know what it can still run, and buyers who want a 10.2-inch iPad with Apple Pencil (1st generation) and Smart Keyboard support for video, web, email and notes.
- Choose something else when: you need the current iPadOS (the 9th generation runs iPadOS 27), USB-C, Apple Intelligence or a laminated screen, or you want the best-value 10.2-inch Wi-Fi iPad, which at The Tech Gadgets is the 8th generation.
- Check before buying: the model number (A2197, A2198 or A2200), the minimum iPadOS listed for each app you need, and whether a case you already own was made for the 10.2-inch iPad.

What is the iPad 7th generation screen size?
The iPad 7th generation screen size is 10.2 inches, measured diagonally. It's an LED-backlit IPS Retina display with a resolution of 2160 x 1620 pixels at 264 pixels per inch and 500 nits of brightness. The 8th and 9th generations use the same size and resolution, while the earlier 5th and 6th generations have a 9.7-inch screen.
The bigger screen was the headline change in 2019. Apple kept the same 264 ppi pixel density as the 9.7-inch models and added pixels: 2160 x 1620 against 2048 x 1536. In practice that gives a little more room for a web page, a document or a split-screen pair of apps, and it is why the 7th gen body is larger than the 6th gen's.
What the screen lacks is just as useful to know. Apple's comparison page shows that the 7th gen display is not laminated and has no True Tone. On a laminated display the glass and the image layer are bonded together, so the picture looks closer to the surface and the Pencil tip lands closer to the line it draws. True Tone, which adjusts colour temperature to the room's lighting, arrived on this line with the 9th generation. For streaming, reading and schoolwork, neither omission stops the iPad doing its job.
What size is the iPad 7th generation?
The iPad 7th generation measures 250.6 mm tall, 174.1 mm wide and 7.5 mm deep (9.8 x 6.8 x 0.29 inches). The Wi-Fi model weighs 483 g and the Wi-Fi + Cellular model 493 g. That is 10.6 mm taller and 4.6 mm wider than the 9.7-inch 5th and 6th generations, at the same 7.5 mm thickness.
This table compares the 9.7-inch and 10.2-inch iPad generations using Apple's published figures.
| iPad | Year | Screen and resolution | Height x width x depth | Weight (Wi-Fi / Cellular) | Chip |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5th generation | 2017 | 9.7in, 2048 x 1536 | 240 x 169.5 x 7.5 mm | 469 g / 478 g | A9 |
| 6th generation | 2018 | 9.7in, 2048 x 1536 | 240 x 169.5 x 7.5 mm | 469 g / 478 g | A10 Fusion |
| 7th generation | 2019 | 10.2in, 2160 x 1620 | 250.6 x 174.1 x 7.5 mm | 483 g / 493 g | A10 Fusion |
| 8th generation | 2020 | 10.2in, 2160 x 1620 | 250.6 x 174.1 x 7.5 mm | 490 g / 495 g | A12 Bionic |
| 9th generation | 2021 | 10.2in, 2160 x 1620 | 250.6 x 174.1 x 7.5 mm | 487 g / 498 g | A13 Bionic |
Two things stand out. The 7th gen kept the 6th gen's A10 Fusion chip, so its upgrade was the larger screen rather than speed. And the three 10.2-inch models share identical outer dimensions, differing by no more than 7 g on the Wi-Fi models. If you're weighing up the smaller 9.7-inch models, our refurbished iPad 6th generation guide covers that size.
Do iPad 7th, 8th and 9th generation cases and keyboards fit each other?
Usually, yes. Apple lists the same 250.6 x 174.1 x 7.5 mm dimensions for all three, and Apple's iPad User Guide lists one Smart Keyboard as compatible with the 7th, 8th and 9th generations. Most 10.2-inch cases are sold for all three, but check that the case listing names your generation before buying. Cases for 9.7-inch iPads won't fit.
The Smart Keyboard connects through the Smart Connector, three small magnetic contacts on the side of the iPad, so there's nothing to pair or switch on. The 7th generation was the first standard iPad to have one; Apple's 2019 launch release described full-size Smart Keyboard support as coming to its most affordable iPad “for the first time”. Apple's same compatibility list also includes the iPad Air (3rd generation) and the iPad Pro 10.5-inch, so a second-hand Smart Keyboard sold for those models will also work with a 7th gen.
The Smart Keyboard Folio, Magic Keyboard and Magic Keyboard Folio are for other iPads and don't work with the 7th gen. Any Bluetooth keyboard will, and Apple Pencil (1st generation) is the only Apple Pencil it supports.
Which iPad is model A2197? iPad 7th generation model numbers
Model A2197 is the iPad 7th generation (2019) Wi-Fi. The Wi-Fi + Cellular version is A2200 or A2198. Apple prints the model number in small text on the back cover, and you can also find it in Settings. If your iPad shows A2270, it's an 8th generation; A2602 is a 9th generation Wi-Fi.
This table lists the model numbers Apple publishes for the standard iPads from the 5th to the 9th generation.
| iPad | Wi-Fi model number | Wi-Fi + Cellular model numbers | Storage options |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5th generation (2017) | A1822 | A1823 | 32GB, 128GB |
| 6th generation (2018) | A1893 | A1954 | 32GB, 128GB |
| 7th generation (2019) | A2197 | A2200, A2198 | 32GB, 128GB |
| 8th generation (2020) | A2270 | A2428, A2429, A2430 | 32GB, 128GB |
| 9th generation (2021) | A2602 | A2604 (A2603 North America, A2605 China mainland) | 64GB, 256GB |
How to find your iPad's model number
Look at the back of the iPad: the model number appears in the small print as “Model A” followed by four digits. Or open Settings, tap General, then About. The Model Number line first shows a part number; tap it and it changes to the A-number. Apple's Identify your iPad model page lists every model number if you need to check another iPad.
How can you tell a 7th gen from an 8th or 9th gen?
They look almost identical from the front, so the model number is the reliable test. Two quicker clues help. The 9th generation came only in 64GB or 256GB and only in Silver or Space Grey, while the 7th and 8th came in 32GB or 128GB and also in Gold. Storage shows in Settings, then General, then About. If it's 32GB or 128GB, you'll still need the A-number to separate a 7th gen from an 8th gen.
What year did the iPad 7th generation come out?
The iPad 7th generation came out in 2019. Apple announced it on 10 September 2019 and began shipping it in the UK on 25 September 2019, priced from £349 for the 32GB Wi-Fi model and £479 for the 32GB Wi-Fi + Cellular model. It shipped with iPadOS 13 and was replaced by the 8th generation in September 2020.
Its launch release positioned it as Apple's most affordable iPad with a larger 10.2-inch screen, Apple Pencil support and the Smart Keyboard. The 8th generation, announced on 15 September 2020, kept the same design and moved to the A12 Bionic chip, which is why the two are so easy to confuse.
What is the latest iOS for the iPad 7th generation?
The latest software for the iPad 7th generation is iPadOS 18, its final major version. Apple renamed iOS for iPad as iPadOS in 2019, so iPadOS 18 is the iPad equivalent of iOS 18. The newest release for it is iPadOS 18.7.10, published on 17 August 2026. It can't install iPadOS 26 or iPadOS 27.
This table shows where each generation's software stands on 5 October 2026, using Apple's compatibility lists and Apple's security releases page.
| iPad | Final major iPadOS | Latest Apple release for it | Status in October 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5th generation | iPadOS 16 | 16.7.16 (11 May 2026) | Security fixes only |
| 6th generation | iPadOS 17 | 17.7.11 (11 May 2026) | Security fixes only |
| 7th generation | iPadOS 18 | 18.7.10 (17 August 2026) | Security fixes only |
| 8th generation | iPadOS 26 | 26.7.1 (28 September 2026) | Still on iPadOS 26.x; not supported by iPadOS 27 |
| 9th generation | iPadOS 27 | 27.0.1 (28 September 2026) | Runs the current iPadOS |
Does the iPad 7th generation still get updates?
It gets security updates, not new features. Apple released six iPadOS 18.7 updates for it between December 2025 and August 2026. Apple doesn't publish an end date for that support, so treat each update as a bonus rather than a promise. Turn on automatic updates in Settings, then General, then Software Update, so it installs whatever Apple releases.
Which apps still work on iPadOS 18?
Most mainstream apps still do. On the UK App Store on 5 October 2026, the current versions of YouTube, BBC iPlayer, Netflix, Disney+, WhatsApp, Zoom, Google Classroom and Microsoft Word listed iPadOS 18 or lower as their minimum, so they install on a 7th gen. Netflix and Word already require iPadOS 18.0, though, so the 7th gen has no headroom left with them. Check the Compatibility line on the App Store for any app you rely on. Apple Intelligence isn't available on this iPad.
Should you buy an iPad 7th generation in 2026?
Buy the Wi-Fi + Cellular 7th gen if you want mobile data on a budget: at £109.00 it is £10.00 cheaper than the 8th gen Cellular. For Wi-Fi only, the 8th generation is the better buy, because at The Tech Gadgets it costs £5.00 less than the 7th gen in every grade and storage size, with a newer chip and iPadOS 26.
This table compares Very Good prices for the two 10.2-inch generations (checked 5 October 2026).
| Very Good variant | iPad 7th gen | iPad 8th gen | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi 32GB | £104.00 | £99.00 | £104.00 − £99.00 = 7th gen £5.00 dearer |
| Wi-Fi 128GB | £124.00 | £119.00 | £124.00 − £119.00 = 7th gen £5.00 dearer |
| Wi-Fi + Cellular 32GB | £109.00 | £119.00 | £119.00 − £109.00 = 7th gen £10.00 cheaper |
| Wi-Fi + Cellular 128GB | £134.00 | £144.00 | £144.00 − £134.00 = 7th gen £10.00 cheaper |
Within the 7th gen listing, Excellent adds £10.00 and Like New adds £20.00 over Very Good, so a Wi-Fi 32GB costs £104.00, £114.00 or £124.00. Going from 32GB to 128GB adds £20.00 on Wi-Fi. Apple's spec page says a standard setup uses about 10GB to 13GB, so choose 128GB for offline video, games or photos. Choose Very Good for a cased or family iPad, because the grade only describes cosmetic marks, and Like New for a gift.
For Wi-Fi buyers, the refurbished iPad 8th generation Wi-Fi is the practical pick, and our 8th generation buying guide covers it in full. If you want the current iPadOS, the iPad 9th generation starts at £164.00 for Very Good 64GB, £60.00 more than the 7th gen 32GB, and our comparison of the 8th and 9th generations sets out what that buys. For the full grade and price breakdown of the 7th gen, read our refurbished iPad 7th generation buying guide.

Condition and what to check on arrival
The Tech Gadgets sells the iPad 7th generation as refurbished UK stock. The listing says each iPad is checked, cleaned, reset and tested before dispatch, and it is not an Apple Certified Refurbished product. The box holds the iPad, a charging cable and protective packaging, with no power adapter. The listing also states at least 85% battery health at dispatch on every grade, but this iPad has no Battery Health screen in Settings (Apple offers that only on newer models such as the iPad (A16)), so ask the team for your unit's reading if it matters.
Every iPad comes with a 12-month warranty from The Tech Gadgets, starting on delivery, covering faults that develop in normal use (not accidental or liquid damage). The warranty policy lists battery defects and reduced capacity as exclusions, but the Consumer Rights Act 30-day right to reject still applies. You also get change-of-mind returns within 30 days if unused and complete (you pay return postage), plus your 14-day right to cancel; see the refund and warranty terms. Orders placed by 3pm Monday to Friday are dispatched the same day from Manchester, and standard delivery is free because every iPad here costs over £50.
When it arrives, check that it starts at Apple's Hello screen; a “Locked to Owner” screen or a request for someone else's Apple Account means Activation Lock is still on, so contact the team. Then confirm the A-number in Settings, install the latest iPadOS 18 update, and test the screen, Touch ID, speakers, cameras and charging. Our second-hand device checklist is written for iPhones, but the Activation Lock and screen checks are the same.

iPad 7th generation size and specs FAQ
Is the iPad 7th generation 10.2 or 10.5 inches?
It's 10.2 inches. The 10.5-inch screen belongs to the iPad Air (3rd generation) and the iPad Pro 10.5-inch, which are different, higher-end models. The confusion is understandable, because Apple lists the same Smart Keyboard for the 10.2-inch iPads, the iPad Air (3rd generation) and the iPad Pro 10.5-inch. Check the model number if you're unsure: A2197, A2200 or A2198 means a 10.2-inch iPad 7th generation.
How heavy is the iPad 7th generation?
Apple lists 483 g for the Wi-Fi model and 493 g for the Wi-Fi + Cellular model. That's 14 g heavier than the 9.7-inch 6th generation Wi-Fi (469 g) and 7 g lighter than the 8th generation Wi-Fi (490 g). Add a case and the total rises; a Smart Keyboard adds more again. Apple notes that size and weight vary by configuration and manufacturing process.
How much RAM does the iPad 7th generation have?
Apple doesn't publish RAM figures for iPads, so you won't find it on the spec sheet. 9to5Mac's iPad RAM list reports 3GB for the 7th generation, the same as the 8th and 9th generations and up from 2GB on the 6th. In daily use the chip and the iPadOS version matter more than this figure, and the A10 Fusion is the oldest chip of the three 10.2-inch models.
Does the iPad 7th generation have USB-C or Face ID?
No. It charges and connects through a Lightning port and unlocks with Touch ID in the Home button. USB-C and an all-screen design arrived on the standard iPad with the 10th generation. The 7th gen does keep a 3.5 mm headphone jack, which the 10th generation dropped, so wired headphones plug straight in without an adapter.
Can the iPad 7th generation take a SIM card?
Only the Wi-Fi + Cellular model, A2200 or A2198. It has a nano-SIM tray on the right-hand side and also supports eSIM, with 4G LTE but no 5G. The Wi-Fi model, A2197, has no SIM tray. At The Tech Gadgets the Cellular version is listed as unlocked for UK networks, and a data plan isn't included. Apple notes that not every network supports eSIM.
Does the iPad 7th generation support Apple Pencil (2nd generation)?
No. Apple's compatibility list puts the 7th generation with Apple Pencil (1st generation) only. It doesn't work with Apple Pencil (2nd generation), Apple Pencil (USB-C) or Apple Pencil Pro. The 1st generation Pencil pairs and charges through the iPad's Lightning port, and it is sold separately. It is the same Pencil the 6th, 8th and 9th generations use.
iPad 7th generation: the short verdict
The iPad 7th generation is a 10.2-inch, 250.6 x 174.1 x 7.5 mm iPad from 2019, model A2197 on Wi-Fi and A2200 or A2198 on Cellular, frozen at iPadOS 18 with security-only updates. It still runs mainstream apps today, and its cases and Smart Keyboard are shared with the 8th and 9th generations.
If you're buying, take the 8th generation for Wi-Fi, because it costs £5.00 less here, and the 7th gen only for Wi-Fi + Cellular, where it saves £10.00. Choose the 9th generation for the current iPadOS, or browse all refurbished iPads and tablets in stock.
