Refurbished iPad 6th Generation UK: Price, Pencil and Worth It?

The iPad 6th generation is the cheapest iPad in our range that works with Apple Pencil, from £74.00. See what each grade, storage size and Cellular option costs, and what iPadOS 17 means for your apps.

The refurbished iPad 6th generation is the cheapest iPad in The Tech Gadgets' tablet range that works with Apple Pencil, from £74.00 for a 32GB Wi-Fi model in Very Good grade (checked 5 October 2026). It suits reading, YouTube and BBC iPlayer, video calls, homework and handwritten notes. The biggest limitation is software: it tops out at iPadOS 17, and as of 5 October 2026 the current Netflix, Microsoft Word and Excel apps won't install on it.

Every unit is refurbished UK stock, sold in Like New, Excellent or Very Good grade with a 12-month warranty from The Tech Gadgets. Each variant costs more than £50, so standard delivery is free. If you can stretch to £99.00, the iPad 8th generation runs a much newer iPadOS, and this guide shows when that extra £25.00 is worth paying.

Quick decision: who the iPad 6th gen suits

Best for:

  • A first iPad for a child, for YouTube, BBC iPlayer, reading, drawing and games such as Roblox and Minecraft.
  • Handwritten notes, annotated worksheets and sketching with Apple Pencil (1st generation) on a small budget.
  • A kitchen, bedside or sofa iPad for recipes, browsing, email and FaceTime calls.
  • A low-cost second iPad for travel, with the Wi-Fi + Cellular model if you want mobile data.

Choose something else when:

  • You want the Netflix, Microsoft Word, Excel or Copilot apps. As of 5 October 2026, their current UK App Store versions need iPadOS 18.
  • A school, work or banking app you need already requires iPadOS 18 or later.
  • You want the longest run of software support from a budget iPad. The 8th generation (iPadOS 26) or 9th generation (iPadOS 27) will last longer.
  • You want a keyboard case that clips on and connects without Bluetooth. The 6th generation has no Smart Connector.

Check before buying:

  • The minimum iPadOS version listed on the App Store page of each app you rely on.
  • Whether 32GB will hold your offline downloads, or whether you need 128GB.
  • Whether you need mobile data away from Wi-Fi, which only the Wi-Fi + Cellular model has.

How much does a refurbished iPad 6th generation cost?

A refurbished iPad 6th generation costs from £74.00 at The Tech Gadgets, for the 32GB Wi-Fi model in Very Good grade. The 128GB Wi-Fi model starts at £99.00, and the Wi-Fi + Cellular version also starts at £99.00 for 32GB. The dearest option is 128GB Wi-Fi + Cellular in Like New grade at £139.00, all checked 5 October 2026.

This table shows every iPad 6th generation price on the two listings, by grade, storage and connectivity.

Grade Wi-Fi 32GB Wi-Fi 128GB Wi-Fi + Cellular 32GB Wi-Fi + Cellular 128GB
Very Good £74.00 £99.00 £99.00 £119.00
Excellent £79.00 £109.00 £109.00 £129.00
Like New £89.00 £119.00 £119.00 £139.00

Each step up in grade adds £5.00 or £10.00. Going from 32GB to 128GB adds £25.00 or £30.00 on Wi-Fi models and £20.00 on Wi-Fi + Cellular models, and all three colours cost the same.

Which grade should you choose?

Choose Very Good if the iPad will live in a case or be used by a child. The grade describes cosmetic condition only, and the listing says every grade works fully. Excellent costs £5.00 more on the 32GB Wi-Fi model (£79.00 − £74.00). Like New costs £15.00 more than Very Good (£89.00 − £74.00) and makes most sense as a gift.

The listings define the grades like this: Like New shows little or no sign of use, Excellent may have light marks, and Very Good may have visible marks that don't affect use. If the iPad is going straight into a folio or bumper case, most marks on the back and edges will be hidden anyway.

One value point: a 128GB Wi-Fi + Cellular model in Very Good grade costs £119.00, the same as 32GB in Like New. Four times the storage usually beats a cleaner back panel.

iPad 6th generation 32GB or 128GB?

Choose 32GB if you mainly stream, browse, read and keep schoolwork in the cloud. Choose 128GB if you download films for journeys, keep photos on the iPad or install large games. On Very Good Wi-Fi models the step is £25.00 (£99.00 − £74.00). At Excellent and Like New it is £30.00 (£109.00 − £79.00 and £119.00 − £89.00).

There's no memory card slot, so the storage you choose is the storage you keep. A child watching on home Wi-Fi will usually manage with the iPad 6th generation 32GB; a commuter who downloads a series before every trip should pick the iPad 6th generation 128GB.

Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi + Cellular: which iPad 6th gen should you buy?

Buy the Wi-Fi model if the iPad stays at home or you're happy to use your phone's hotspot. Buy the Wi-Fi + Cellular model (A1954) if you want its own mobile data on trains, in the car or on holiday. It uses 4G with a nano-SIM, and Apple lists Assisted GPS, which the Wi-Fi model lacks. It costs £25.00 more at Very Good 32GB (£99.00 − £74.00).

Apple lists the cellular connection as data only, so there are no ordinary phone calls, though FaceTime works over mobile data. The listing says the model is unlocked for any UK network. There's no eSIM, no 5G and no data plan included, so add a physical data-only SIM. The iPad 6th generation Wi-Fi + Cellular listing shows every grade and colour.

  • Assisted GPS and GLONASS for maps away from Wi-Fi
  • At least 85% battery health at dispatch, as stated on the listing

  • Same-day dispatch from Manchester on weekday orders placed by 3pm

Does the iPad 6th generation work with Apple Pencil?

Yes. The iPad 6th generation works with Apple Pencil (1st generation) only, as Apple confirms on its compatibility page. You pair and charge it by removing the cap and plugging it into the iPad's Lightning port. Apple Pencil (2nd generation), Apple Pencil (USB-C) and Apple Pencil Pro don't work with this model, and the pencil is sold separately.

Pencil support is the main reason to choose this iPad over the 5th generation, which costs £5.00 less at Very Good 32GB (£74.00 − £69.00) but doesn't work with any Apple Pencil. For handwritten notes, marked-up PDFs and sketching, that £5.00 is the cheapest upgrade in the range.

Buying a used pencil? The 1st generation has a removable cap over a Lightning connector, and Apple's Apple Pencil compatibility list confirms which pencil works with which iPad.

Can you use a keyboard with the iPad 6th generation?

Yes, but it has to be a Bluetooth keyboard. Apple's technical specifications list a Smart Connector on the iPad 7th and 8th generation but not on the 6th generation, so keyboard cases that attach through that connector won't work. A Bluetooth keyboard made for iPad will pair over the iPad's Bluetooth 4.2, including keyboard folios with their own battery.

How long will the iPad 6th generation get updates?

The iPad 6th generation's last major software version is iPadOS 17. Apple's iPadOS 18 compatibility list starts at the iPad 7th generation, so this model can't install iPadOS 18, 26 or 27. Apple has still released security fixes for it: iPadOS 17.7.11 arrived on 11 May 2026. Apple doesn't publish an end date for these fixes, so don't count on more.

The iPad keeps working as before; the limits show up in the App Store, where each app sets a minimum iPadOS version.

Here is where that stands as of 5 October 2026, per the UK App Store. The current versions of YouTube, BBC iPlayer, Disney+, Spotify, WhatsApp, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Classroom, Roblox and Minecraft install on iPadOS 17, as do the Barclays, HSBC UK, Lloyds, NatWest and Starling banking apps. Netflix, Microsoft Word, Excel and Copilot now need iPadOS 18, so they won't install. Monzo's listing shows iPhone only. Developers change these minimums with each update, so check any app you rely on just before you order.

Apple Intelligence isn't available on this iPad. Apple's security releases page lists each iPadOS 17 fix for the 6th generation, and for the full software history and model numbers you can read our explainer on the iPad 6th generation release date, iOS versions and Apple Pencil.

iPad 6th vs 7th vs 8th generation: which is the better buy?

For most buyers the iPad 8th generation is the better buy if you can spend £25.00 more: £99.00 against £74.00 for 32GB Wi-Fi in Very Good grade. It adds the A12 Bionic chip, a 10.2-inch screen, a Smart Connector and support for iPadOS 26. The 7th generation is hard to justify at £104.00, because it costs more than the 8th.

This table compares the budget iPads The Tech Gadgets lists, using Apple's specifications and Very Good Wi-Fi prices checked on 5 October 2026.

Generation Chip Screen Apple Pencil Smart Connector Last major iPadOS 32GB Very Good 128GB Very Good
5th (2017) A9 9.7-inch Not supported No iPadOS 16 £69.00 £84.00
6th (2018) A10 Fusion 9.7-inch 1st generation No iPadOS 17 £74.00 £99.00
7th (2019) A10 Fusion 10.2-inch 1st generation Yes iPadOS 18 £104.00 £124.00
8th (2020) A12 Bionic 10.2-inch 1st generation Yes iPadOS 26 £99.00 £119.00

The 7th generation uses the same A10 Fusion chip as the 6th. On the iPad 7th generation listing you pay £30.00 more (£104.00 − £74.00) for a larger screen, the Smart Connector and one extra major iPadOS version. The 8th generation gives you all of that plus a newer chip for £5.00 less than the 7th (£104.00 − £99.00), which is why we'd skip the 7th generation at 32GB.

At £99.00 the 6th generation 128GB and the 8th generation 32GB cost the same in Very Good grade. Pick the 6th for storage if your apps are happy on iPadOS 17, or the refurbished iPad 8th generation (2020) for the newer chip and iPadOS 26. At 128GB the 8th generation costs £119.00, which is £20.00 more (£119.00 − £99.00).

Decision rules

  • Choose the 6th generation when your budget stops below £99.00, you want Apple Pencil, and your apps run on iPadOS 17.
  • Choose the 8th generation instead when you want longer software support, a keyboard case or a bigger screen for £25.00 more. Our refurbished iPad 8th generation buying guide covers its grades and prices.
  • Choose the 5th generation only when you don't need Apple Pencil and every £5.00 counts.
  • Look at the 9th generation when you want iPadOS 27 support. It starts at £164.00 for 64GB, which is £90.00 more than the 6th (£164.00 − £74.00).

Who should not buy an iPad 6th generation?

Skip the iPad 6th generation if you need an app that already requires iPadOS 18 or later, if you want years of new features, or if you plan to type a lot on a clip-on keyboard. Artists who want Apple Pencil (USB-C) or a bigger screen should look at a newer model. Apple Intelligence isn't available on any budget iPad we list.

  • Students with set apps. Ask the school or college which apps and minimum iPadOS version they expect before you buy.
  • Long-term owners. If you want one iPad to last as long as possible, the 9th generation is the only budget model here that supports iPadOS 27.
  • Netflix households. As of 5 October 2026 the current Netflix app needs iPadOS 18, so it won't install on this iPad.
  • Digital artists. The screen isn't laminated and has no True Tone, and Apple Pencil (USB-C) needs an iPad 10th generation, iPad (A16) or another model on Apple's list. Our refurbished Apple iPad buying guide covers the 10th generation.

Condition, warranty and what to check on arrival

These iPads are refurbished UK stock. The listing says each one is refurbished by The Tech Gadgets: checked, cleaned, reset and tested before dispatch. It isn't an Apple Certified Refurbished product, and the grade describes cosmetic condition only. Our explainer on what refurbished, used and renewed actually mean sets out how those labels differ.

Battery health and what's in the box

The listings state at least 85% battery health at dispatch on every grade. This iPad has no battery-health readout in Settings, so if you want the figure, ask the team for the reading from the pre-dispatch diagnostic check or use a Mac app such as coconutBattery, which can read iPad battery data. Apple rated the iPad 6th generation at up to 10 hours of web browsing on Wi-Fi or watching video when new, so expect somewhat less from a used battery.

In the box you get the iPad and a charging cable. There's no power adapter, so you'll need a USB power adapter that suits the supplied cable.

Warranty, returns and delivery

You get a 12-month warranty from The Tech Gadgets, starting on delivery, covering faults that develop in normal use (not accidental or liquid damage). The warranty policy lists battery defects and reduced capacity as exclusions, but the Consumer Rights Act 30-day right to reject still applies, so pay attention to battery life in your first weeks. The returns and warranty policy has the full wording, and our article on warranty and consumer rights for refurbished devices explains how they fit together.

Change-of-mind returns are accepted within 30 days if unused and complete (you pay return postage), plus your 14-day right to cancel. Orders placed by 3pm Monday to Friday are dispatched the same day from Manchester. Standard delivery takes 1–3 working days and is free on these iPads; Special Delivery (next working day) is £9.99. The shipping policy covers weekend and bank holiday cut-offs.

Checks to make in the first few days

  1. Go to Settings, then General, then About, and tap the part number to see the model number: A1893 for Wi-Fi or A1954 for Wi-Fi + Cellular.
  2. Confirm the iPad starts at the Hello screen and that you can sign in with your own Apple Account. If it shows a Locked to Owner screen, contact the team before going further.
  3. Install the latest iPadOS 17 release from Settings, then General, then Software Update.
  4. Test Touch ID, the Home button, both cameras, the speakers, the 3.5 mm headphone jack and charging through the Lightning port.
  5. Drag an app icon slowly across the whole screen to check touch response from edge to edge.
  6. If you own an Apple Pencil (1st generation), pair it and write across the full screen.
  7. On the Wi-Fi + Cellular model, insert your nano-SIM and check that mobile data connects.

If anything isn't right, contact the team within 30 days so your full right to reject applies.

Refurbished iPad 6th generation FAQs

Is the iPad 6th generation still worth buying in 2026?

Yes, for light use on a tight budget, provided your apps still support iPadOS 17. At £74.00 for 32GB Wi-Fi in Very Good grade, it is the cheapest route to Apple Pencil note-taking in our range. If you want the newest apps and longer software support, the 8th generation at £99.00 is the better long-term buy.

Is an iPad 6th generation good for a child?

It is a sensible first iPad for a child because it costs little and works with Apple Pencil for drawing. As of 5 October 2026, YouTube, BBC iPlayer, Roblox, Minecraft and Google Classroom all install on it from the UK App Store. Screen Time in Settings lets you set app limits, content restrictions and downtime.

Put it in a sturdy case and choose Very Good grade, since new marks will follow anyway.

What is the difference between a reconditioned iPad and a refurbished iPad?

In UK shops the two words usually mean the same thing: a used iPad that has been checked, cleaned, reset and tested before resale. What matters more than the label is what the seller states. For these iPads that means a cosmetic grade, a minimum battery-health figure at dispatch and a 12-month warranty from The Tech Gadgets.

Is a second-hand iPad 6th generation cheaper than a refurbished one?

A private second-hand sale can cost less, but you usually get no grade, no stated battery minimum and no warranty. You also need the seller to remove the iPad from their Apple Account, or Activation Lock can stop you setting it up. Buying refurbished from a retailer adds a tested unit, Consumer Rights Act protection and a 12-month warranty.

Does the iPad 6th generation come with a charger?

It comes with a charging cable but no power adapter. The listing doesn't state the cable type, so check the plug end when it arrives before you buy an adapter. Any USB power adapter that fits the cable will charge it through the Lightning port, and Apple's specification also lists charging from a computer's USB port.

Will my apps work on an iPad 6th generation?

Any app whose current version supports iPadOS 17 will install; the rest won't. As of 5 October 2026, per the UK App Store, YouTube, BBC iPlayer, WhatsApp, Zoom, Teams and the Barclays, HSBC UK, Lloyds and NatWest apps install, while Netflix, Word, Excel and Copilot need iPadOS 18. For anything else, check the minimum iPadOS version on the app's App Store page before ordering.

Verdict: is a refurbished iPad 6th generation worth it?

Yes, if you want the cheapest iPad that works with Apple Pencil and your apps run on iPadOS 17. Buy the 32GB Wi-Fi model in Very Good grade at £74.00 for streaming, reading and notes, or the 128GB at £99.00 if you download a lot. Choose Wi-Fi + Cellular only if you need mobile data or built-in GPS.

Buy something else if you need iPadOS 18 apps, a clip-on keyboard or the longest software support. The 8th generation at £99.00 is the step-up most buyers should weigh first, and the full range of refurbished iPads and tablets in stock includes the 9th and 10th generation for longer support.
