For most older people who want calls and texts without a smartphone, the best simple mobile phone we sell is the Nokia 105 4G (2024) with its 2.4-inch screen, from £39.99 (checked 5 October 2026). It has a proper keypad, a torch, an FM radio and a removable battery, and it's the only one of our three Nokias that can keep making calls after EE, O2 and Vodafone close their 2G networks from 2029, provided 4G Calling works on your relative's network.
It suits a parent or grandparent who mainly rings family, sends the odd text and wants a phone that stays charged for days. The biggest limitation is simple: this is not a big-button senior phone. There's no SOS button, no published hearing-aid compatibility rating, and no WhatsApp or video calling.

Quick decision: which mobile phone for an elderly relative?
- Best for: an older person on EE, O2, Vodafone or a provider using them, who wants calls, texts, a torch and the radio on a familiar phone that can outlast the 2G closures. That's the Nokia 105 4G (2024).
- Best mobile phone for an OAP on a tight budget, short term: the Nokia 105 (2024) at £29.99 or the Nokia 106 (2023) at £31.99, only on EE, O2 or Vodafone, and only if you'll replace it when that network's 2G ends.
- Choose something else when: they need an SOS button, oversized keys, a hearing-aid-rated handset, or WhatsApp video calls with the grandchildren.
- Check before buying: which network their SIM runs on, whether they need a nano-SIM or mini-SIM, and whether 4G Calling (VoLTE) will work. Ask our team and check with the network before ordering, especially on Three, SMARTY or iD Mobile.

What makes a mobile phone easy for an elderly person?
An easy phone for an older person does a few things well: physical keys they can feel, a short menu that never changes with app updates, a battery that lasts days rather than hours, a ringtone they can hear, and useful extras such as a torch and a radio. All three Nokias, made by HMD Global under licence from Nokia, cover those basics.
Keys, not a touchscreen. HMD describes the keypad on the 105 models as large and tactile. Every action is a key press, so there's no mis-tapping glass, which makes these phones for elderly users far less frustrating than a hand-me-down smartphone.
A menu that stays put. There are no app updates moving buttons around. HMD lists a Cloud Apps service (news, weather, video) for the 105 4G, but UK availability isn't confirmed and it would use mobile data; your relative can ignore it.
Battery for days. HMD's standby figures in the table are for a new phone; calls and the radio use more. All three batteries are removable, so a worn one can be swapped.
Ringtones and text. HMD's user guides describe a loud or outdoor profile with louder tones, and the guides for both 105 models cover making the text bigger. Neither is a hearing or sight aid, so test them with your relative.
Torch and radio. On the 105 (2024), pressing the scroll key up twice from the home screen turns the torch on. The FM radio on the 105 4G and the 106 plays with or without a headset, which many older listeners prefer.
Is the Nokia 105 4G a big button mobile phone?
No. The Nokia 105 4G (2024) is a standard-size keypad phone with what HMD calls a large, tactile keypad, not an oversized-key senior phone. It has no SOS button, no charging cradle and no hearing-aid compatibility claim. If any of those is a must-have, a dedicated big button mobile phone for elderly users is the better choice, and we don't sell those.
| Senior-phone feature | Our Nokias | What to look for instead |
|---|---|---|
| Oversized keys | No, a standard feature-phone keypad | A dedicated big-button phone if eyesight or dexterity is poor |
| SOS or assistance button | No | A senior phone that lists an SOS button, checking who it alerts and which networks it works on |
| Hearing-aid compatibility | Not claimed; HMD's guides only warn that some wireless devices may interfere with some hearing aids | A phone with a published rating, checked with their audiologist |
| Can outlast the 2G closures | 105 4G only, with working 4G Calling | Any 4G phone confirmed for 4G Calling on their network |
Who should not buy one of these Nokias for an older relative: someone with significant sight loss who needs large, high-contrast keys; someone living alone who needs a button that summons help, where a personal alarm service may suit better than any phone; and a hearing-aid user who needs a rated handset. For anyone else who wants a familiar keypad, a Nokia phone for seniors is a sensible choice.
Why does 4G matter for an older relative's phone?
Because 2G is closing. All four UK networks have switched off 3G. EE begins closing 2G from May 2029, O2 starts in summer 2029 and Vodafone switches off in spring 2030, in phases. Three has never had 2G. A 2G-only phone stops making calls when its network's 2G goes; a 4G phone keeps working only if 4G Calling works on that network.
The table summarises each network's plans, as set out in Ofcom's guide to the 2G and 3G switch-off and the operators' own pages, checked on 5 October 2026.
| Network | 2G plan | Nokia 105 (2024) or 106 (2023) | Nokia 105 4G (2024) |
|---|---|---|---|
| EE | Begins closing 2G from May 2029 | Calls and texts until EE's 2G closes | Calls today; after closure only with working 4G Calling |
| O2 | Starts switching off 2G in summer 2029 | Calls and texts until O2's 2G closes | As EE; O2 needs an R15 SIM for 4G Calling |
| Vodafone | Switches off 2G in spring 2030, in phases | Calls and texts until Vodafone's 2G closes | As EE |
| Three, SMARTY, iD Mobile | Three has never had 2G | No normal calls or texts; 999 calls only | Calls only with working 4G Calling, not yet confirmed for our units |
Under the Government's 2G Switch-off Charter, operators announce dates at least three years ahead, but local trials can come earlier with three months' notice. Other SIM brands follow the network they use.
This matters more for an older person. A letter about the switch-off is easy to put aside, and the first sign of trouble may be a phone that quietly stops ringing. A 2G phone also gets no mobile data and no government Emergency Alerts. On Three, a 2G phone can for now reach 999 through other networks, but not by emergency text, and HMD's own advice is never to rely solely on any mobile phone for medical emergencies.
With 3G off, a 4G phone makes calls using 4G Calling (VoLTE), falling back to 2G while it exists. EE says 4G phones without it will lose service completely when its 2G closes. HMD advertises HD calling on the 105 4G, but no UK network lists this model and ours are international stock, so 4G Calling is unconfirmed on every UK network. Ask our team and the network before ordering: on EE, text HANDSET to 150; Vodafone has an IMEI checker.
Which Nokia is the best mobile phone for an elderly parent?
The Nokia 105 4G (2024) suits most older people on EE, O2 or Vodafone. It has the biggest screen of the three at 2.4 inches, a radio that works without a headset, USB-C charging, Bluetooth and the only route past the 2G closures. Choose the 105 (2024) or 106 (2023) only on those networks, and only if you'll replace it within a few years.
Choose the Nokia 105 4G (2024) when you want one phone to last, or a bigger screen would help their eyesight. If they're on Three, SMARTY or iD Mobile, ask us first: without working 4G Calling it can't make calls there, and the 2G Nokias can't at all. Moving to a provider on EE, O2 or Vodafone keeps 2G as a fallback until 2029 to 2030.
Choose the Nokia 105 (2024), our lowest-priced Nokia, instead when they're on EE, O2 or Vodafone and you need a cheap spare or stop-gap, perhaps for a hospital stay.
Choose the Nokia 106 (2023) with headset-free FM radio instead when they're on one of those networks, love the radio, want HMD's longest quoted battery life of the three, and the 1.8-inch screen isn't a problem.

How do you set up a simple phone for an elderly person?
Set it up before you hand it over. Fit the SIM and battery, charge it fully, add the handful of people they ring most, switch to the loudest ringtone profile, and show them the torch and the volume control. Don't set a keypad security code they might forget: HMD's guide says it can't open or bypass that code for you.
- SIM card: the 105 4G takes a nano-SIM; the 105 (2024) and 106 (2023) take a mini-SIM. On O2, ask for an R15 SIM for 4G Calling.
- Contacts: on the 105 4G, go to Menu, Contacts, then Add new contact. Name people the way your relative thinks of them, such as “Sarah daughter” or “GP surgery”.
- Ringtone: on the 105 4G, go to Menu, Settings, Profiles and choose the outdoor profile with loud tones. On the 105 (2024), personalise a profile to set the ringtone volume.
- Call volume: the scroll key changes the volume during a call or on the radio (up and down on the 105 4G, left and right on the 105 (2024)).
- Speed dial: HMD's online guides for these models don't document a speed-dial setting, so don't plan around one. A short, well-named contacts list does the same job.
- Keypad lock: practise unlocking together. On the 105 4G, select Unlock and press the star key.
Finally, write their own mobile number on a card for their purse or wallet.
Is the 4G model worth the extra money?
Yes, for most families on EE, O2 or Vodafone. The Nokia 105 4G costs £10.00 more than the 105 (2024) (£39.99 − £29.99) and £8.00 more than the 106 (2023) (£39.99 − £31.99). The 2G models face replacement when EE starts closing 2G in May 2029, about three and a half years away; the 105 4G can carry on if 4G Calling works.
Every Nokia here costs under £50, so standard delivery is £4.99 on one phone: £44.98 delivered for the 105 4G, or £34.98 for the 105 (2024). A 105 4G each for two grandparents comes to £79.98 (£39.99 × 2), which qualifies for free standard delivery. Special Delivery (next working day) is £9.99.
When is a simple smartphone a better phone for seniors?
When they want to see family, not just hear them. WhatsApp, video calls with grandchildren, photos and banking apps all need a smartphone, and none of our Nokias runs WhatsApp or app-store apps. A budget Samsung with a large touchscreen is the natural step up; our guide to the best Galaxy A-series phones under £150 compares them. It's also the safer choice on Three if the Nokia's 4G Calling can't be confirmed.

Condition, stock origin and warranty: what to check on arrival
All three Nokias are Brand New, sealed, unlocked, international stock. The box printing and contents follow the market the phone was made for, so the charger plug may not be a UK type; a UK USB mains adapter you already own is the easy fix. Read what brand-new international stock means, and our guide to unlocked, SIM-free phones for how SIMs and networks work.
For a sealed Nokia bought as a gift, the cover is a 12-month warranty from The Tech Gadgets, starting on delivery, covering faults that develop in normal use (not accidental or liquid damage), as listed on the product page and in our returns and warranty policy. The warranty policy lists battery defects and reduced capacity as exclusions, but the Consumer Rights Act 30-day right to reject still applies. You also get change-of-mind returns within 30 days if unused and complete (you pay return postage), plus your 14-day right to cancel.
Orders placed by 3pm Monday to Friday are dispatched the same day from Manchester; our delivery and dispatch policy covers weekends and bank holidays. When the phone arrives, check:
- The seal is intact and the colour is the one you ordered.
- The SIM fits and you have a UK plug for the charger.
- It charges fully and holds charge over the first few days.
- A test call and text work both ways, and the ringtone is audible from another room.
- On a 105 4G, the 4G symbol stays on during a call; on Three-based networks, the call connects at all.

Buyer FAQ: mobile phones for elderly people
What is the best mobile phone for an elderly person who only needs calls and texts?
Among the phones we sell, the Nokia 105 4G (2024) at £39.99 is the best fit for someone on EE, O2 or Vodafone. It keeps the familiar keypad and simple menu older users like, adds a torch and an FM radio, and is the only one of our Nokias that can outlast the 2G closures, provided 4G Calling works on their network. If you need oversized keys or an SOS button, look at a dedicated senior phone instead.
Do you sell large button mobile phones for the elderly with an SOS button?
No. We don't sell dedicated big-button senior phones or phones with an SOS button. Our Nokias have standard-size physical keypads, which many older people find easy, but they aren't designed for serious sight or dexterity problems. If your relative needs a button that alerts family, choose a senior phone that lists that feature, or a personal alarm service.
Will a Nokia 105 or 106 stop working when 2G is switched off?
Yes. The Nokia 105 (2024) and 106 (2023) are 2G-only. They can't make normal calls or send texts on Three, SMARTY or iD Mobile, and they'll stop working on EE, O2 and Vodafone as each closes its 2G network: EE from May 2029, O2 from summer 2029 and Vodafone in spring 2030. Local trials can come earlier, with notice. For a long-term phone, choose the 105 4G and confirm 4G Calling first.
Can my mum use WhatsApp on a Nokia 105 4G?
No. None of our Nokias runs WhatsApp, video calls or app-store apps. They make calls and send ordinary text messages. If WhatsApp is how the family keeps in touch, a budget smartphone is the better buy, and you can keep the Nokia charged in a drawer as a back-up for calls.
Are these Nokias hearing aid compatible?
HMD doesn't claim hearing-aid compatibility for any of these models. Its user guides only carry the standard warning that some wireless devices may interfere with some hearing aids. If your relative wears hearing aids, ask their audiologist what to look for before ordering, and test a call with the hearing aids in as soon as the phone arrives.
How long does the battery last on a Nokia for seniors?
HMD quotes up to 22 days of standby for the 106 (2023), up to 18 days for the 105 (2024) and 15 days for the 105 4G (2024), for a new phone. Calls and the radio use more. Batteries lose capacity with age, but all three are removable and replaceable. The warranty policy excludes battery wear, though a faulty battery within 30 days is covered by your right to reject.
Final verdict: the best mobile phone for elderly people we sell
For a parent or grandparent on EE, O2 or Vodafone who wants a simple phone for calls, texts, the radio and a torch, buy the Nokia 105 4G (2024). It's familiar, easy to set up for them, light on charging and the only one of our three that can carry on after 2G closes. Check 4G Calling with us and the network before ordering, and set up their contacts and the loud profile before you hand it over.
The 105 (2024) and 106 (2023) are good value spares on those networks, but not long-term phones. Buy something else if they need an SOS button, oversized keys, a hearing-aid-rated handset, or WhatsApp and video calls. You can compare everything else in our mobile phones in stock.
