Buy the refurbished Samsung Galaxy A16 5G if you will actually use 5G, or if you plan to keep the phone until its updates run out around 2030 and want that option open. Otherwise the Galaxy A16 4G is the smarter buy. Samsung gives both phones the same 6.7-inch 90Hz Super AMOLED screen, the same cameras, battery, charging and IP54 rating, and the 4G model costs £26.00 to £35.00 less depending on grade and storage (prices checked 5 October 2026).
The Galaxy A16 5G adds the 5G modem and a slightly faster processor on paper. The limitation that matters more on both is memory: Samsung UK's 128GB versions have 4GB of RAM, so neither phone is built for demanding games or dozens of apps open at once.
Grade, storage and colour are chosen on the product page. Prices were checked on 5 October 2026 and can change.
Galaxy A16 4G or Galaxy A16 5G: the quick decision
- The Galaxy A16 4G suits: calls, WhatsApp, maps, music and social apps on a tight budget; a first smartphone, a spare or a parent's phone; anyone whose SIM plan doesn't include 5G.
- The Galaxy A16 5G suits: people whose plan includes 5G and who download large files, share their connection with a laptop, or want 5G available for the four or so years of updates left.
- Consider an alternative when: you want a stabilised camera for low light, security updates well beyond 2030, eSIM, or more than 4GB of RAM.
- Check before buying: both phones are international stock, so box printing and the model code may differ from UK units, and Samsung UK may not carry out warranty repairs on non-UK units (The Tech Gadgets' 12-month warranty is your cover). If you rely on Wi-Fi Calling or 4G Calling (VoLTE) on a particular network, ask the team before ordering. Also check the RAM fitted to 256GB units and what the Fair option means, because the grading page doesn't define it.
Buying facts: the two Galaxy A16 models side by side
Manufacturer specifications come from Samsung UK unless marked. Samsung UK doesn't name the processors, so the chip names come from Samsung Brazil's launch announcement for the Brazilian versions of the same phones.

What actually separates the Galaxy A16 4G from the Galaxy A16 5G?
Three things: the 5G modem, the processor and the support date printed on Samsung UK's spec pages. Everything else Samsung lists is the same, from the 6.7-inch 90Hz Super AMOLED screen and 50MP main camera to the 5,000mAh battery, 25W charging, IP54 rating, NFC and the 200g body. Even the support-date gap shrinks once you look closely.
Processor: a modest step, not a different class of phone
Samsung UK lists a top CPU speed of 2.2GHz for the Galaxy A16 4G and 2.4GHz for the Galaxy A16 5G. Samsung Brazil names the chips as the MediaTek Helio G99 (6nm) and the Exynos 1330 (5nm). GSMArena notes the 5G model's chip can differ by market, so treat the names as a strong guide rather than a guarantee for every unit.
On paper the 5G model has the edge. In daily use the bigger constraint is shared: Samsung UK's 128GB versions of both have 4GB of RAM, which limits how many apps stay open in the background, and neither chip is aimed at demanding 3D games. If speed is your main reason to look at the 5G version, a higher Galaxy A model is a better use of extra money than a 5G modem.
Screen, cameras and battery: identical on paper
Both phones use a 6.7-inch Full HD+ Super AMOLED panel at 90Hz. Samsung publishes an 800-nit high-brightness figure for the Galaxy A16 5G but none for the 4G. That is a gap in Samsung's published data, not evidence of a dimmer screen.
The cameras are the same hardware: a 50MP f/1.8 main camera with autofocus, a 5MP ultra-wide and a 2MP macro, plus a 13MP selfie camera. Samsung UK lists no optical image stabilisation on either, and both record Full HD at 30fps. Daylight suits them; dim rooms and moving subjects need a steady hand.
Samsung UK rates both batteries at 5,000mAh, and each model's UK spec page quotes “up to 18 hours” of video playback for a new phone. A refurbished phone's battery health is a separate percentage that depends on the individual unit, which is why the grade minimum matters more than the spec sheet.
Body, security hardware and connections
Dimensions, weight and IP54 rating are identical. Both include Samsung's Knox Vault security hardware, plus NFC for contactless payments, Bluetooth 5.3 and dual-band Wi-Fi. Neither has eSIM, wireless charging or a 3.5mm headphone jack.
Do you need 5G in the UK in 2026?
Only if you'll use it. A 5G SIM plan still works in the Galaxy A16 4G, just at 4G speeds, and the phone makes calls over 4G, so the UK's 3G switch-off doesn't affect it. 5G earns its premium when your plan includes it and you regularly download large files, share your connection with a laptop, or want the option over the phone's remaining support years.
Most of what a budget phone does in a day is light on data: messages, calls, maps, music and social apps all work on 4G. 5G helps with bigger jobs, such as downloading a series before a trip or tethering a laptop. Check your network's coverage checker for your home and workplace before paying for it.
The 3G switch-off and 4G calling
Ofcom says 3G mobile networks in the UK are now switched off, and that all mobile network operators have confirmed to the Government they will switch off 2G by 2033 at the latest. A Galaxy A16 4G uses 4G for data and, where your network and plan support it, 4G Calling (VoLTE) for voice. Ofcom adds that some 4G devices may need a software or settings update so calls use the right network, so install pending updates when you set the phone up.
Choosing on 5G alone
Choose the Galaxy A16 4G when your plan has no 5G, your usage is mostly messaging, calls and streaming, or the £28.00 saving on a Very Good 128GB phone matters more than a faster connection you may rarely see.
Choose the Galaxy A16 5G instead when your plan includes 5G and you use lots of mobile data, you hotspot often, or you want the slightly quicker processor and the option of 5G through to 2030.
How much more does the Galaxy A16 5G cost, grade by grade?
Between £26.00 and £35.00, depending on grade and storage. The premium is strikingly steady at roughly 26–28% of the 4G price, so moving up a grade doesn't make 5G relatively cheaper. On Very Good 128GB, the lowest grade with a published definition, the sum is £128.99 − £100.99 = £28.00.
The table compares the same grade and storage on each refurbished listing, using prices checked on 5 October 2026.
| Grade and storage | Galaxy A16 4G, Refurbished | Galaxy A16 5G, Refurbished | Extra for 5G | Premium |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fair, 128GB | £93.99 | £119.99 | £26.00 | 27.7% |
| Very Good, 128GB | £100.99 | £128.99 | £28.00 | 27.7% |
| Excellent, 128GB | £110.00 | £140.00 | £30.00 | 27.3% |
| Like New, 128GB | £120.99 | £153.99 | £33.00 | 27.3% |
| Fair, 256GB | £110.99 | £141.99 | £31.00 | 27.9% |
| Very Good, 256GB | £118.99 | £151.99 | £33.00 | 27.7% |
| Excellent, 256GB | £129.99 | £164.99 | £35.00 | 26.9% |
| Like New, 256GB | £134.99 | £169.99 | £35.00 | 25.9% |
Samsung UK launched them at £199 and £169, so the £30 gap has barely moved. Support for both runs about 4.1 years from 5 October 2026 (48.9 months to 31 October 2030 for the 5G and 49.5 months to about November 2030 for the 4G, each ÷ 12). On that basis a Very Good 128GB Galaxy A16 4G costs about £24.63 a year (£100.99 ÷ 4.1) and the Galaxy A16 5G about £31.46 (£128.99 ÷ 4.1), a difference of under £7 a year.
Two cross-grade comparisons stand out. A Very Good 256GB Galaxy A16 4G costs £118.99, which is £10.00 less than a Very Good 128GB Galaxy A16 5G at £128.99: double the storage instead of 5G. And a Like New 128GB Galaxy A16 4G at £120.99 is £8.00 cheaper than that same 5G phone.
Both listings also sell a Fair option. A Fair option is listed; the grading page doesn't define it, so ask the team about its condition before ordering.
128GB or 256GB: storage advice for the Galaxy A16
128GB suits most buyers, because both the Galaxy A16 4G and Galaxy A16 5G take a microSD card of up to 1.5TB. The catch is the hybrid slot: a memory card uses the second SIM position, so dual-SIM users can't add one. If you need two SIMs and keep lots of photos, video or offline media, 256GB is the cleaner choice.
Moving from 128GB to 256GB costs £14.00 to £19.99 on the 4G listing and £16.00 to £24.99 on the 5G listing, depending on grade. A card suits photos, videos, music and downloads, while apps and their data generally stay on internal storage, so app-heavy users gain more from the larger model.
Samsung UK sold both models only as 4GB + 128GB, while Samsung Brazil lists an 8GB + 256GB version. The product pages say RAM in 256GB units depends on the model supplied and ask you to message before ordering, so don't pay for 256GB expecting 8GB unless the team confirms it.
Software support: Samsung's promise and what's left from October 2026
Samsung promises the Galaxy A16 4G and Galaxy A16 5G six Android upgrades and six years of security updates. Samsung UK's spec pages then list different end dates: 31 October 2030 for the 5G and 31 August 2031 for the 4G. Six years from the 4G's November 2024 UK launch would be about November 2030, so plan on roughly four years for either.
“Computed” below means we worked it out from launch dates; it isn't a Samsung figure.
| Support detail | Galaxy A16 4G (LTE) | Galaxy A16 5G |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung's commitment | 6 OS upgrades, 6 years of security updates | 6 OS upgrades, 6 years of security updates |
| Samsung UK “valid until” | 31 August 2031 | 31 October 2030 |
| Six years from UK launch (computed) | About 20 November 2030 | About October 2030 |
| Left from 5 October 2026 (days ÷ 30.44) | 49.5 months to about 20 November 2030 (computed); 58.8 months to 31 August 2031 (stated) | 48.9 months to 31 October 2030 |
| Date to plan around | Late 2030 | 31 October 2030 |
The two dates for the Galaxy A16 4G don't line up, Samsung doesn't explain why, and its own footnote says update policies are subject to change. We base the advice on the more conservative date, which puts both phones within a month or so of each other. Don't choose the 4G model because its spec page shows a later date.
Android 14 plus six upgrades would take both phones as far as Android 20 (computed). Samsung's security-update list, checked on 5 October 2026, places both the Galaxy A16 and Galaxy A16 5G on quarterly security updates, so expect patches roughly every three months. When support ends, the phone keeps working but stops receiving fixes for newly found flaws, which is the point to plan a replacement.
Alternatives to the Galaxy A16, and when spending more makes sense
For the next model up, our Galaxy A16 vs A17 refurbished comparison covers that in full. In short, a Very Good 128GB Galaxy A17 5G costs £165.99 − £128.99 = £37.00 more than the equivalent Galaxy A16 5G, and the main thing it adds is a stabilised main camera.
Two brand-new phones sit close to the A16 prices. Both are brand new and sealed, sold unlocked for UK networks by The Tech Gadgets, but Samsung doesn't list either model on its UK website, so check with the team before ordering if you rely on VoLTE or Wi-Fi Calling. The product page and returns policy list a 12-month warranty from The Tech Gadgets for each.
- Galaxy A07 5G, brand new, from £133.99 (64GB). The sealed Galaxy A07 5G listing is £5.00 more than a Very Good 128GB Galaxy A16 5G. You gain a 6,000mAh battery, a 120Hz screen, a headphone jack and security support to 31 January 2032 on Samsung's Malaysian and Indian spec pages, which matches six years from its January 2026 launch. You give up the AMOLED panel (it uses a 720 x 1600 LCD), half the storage, the ultra-wide camera and NFC, which Samsung doesn't list, so no tap-to-pay from the phone.
- Galaxy A06 5G, brand new, from £120.99 (64GB, Black). The brand-new Galaxy A06 5G costs £20.00 more than a Very Good 128GB Galaxy A16 4G and £8.00 less than the equivalent Galaxy A16 5G. It has 5G and a sealed box, but a 720 x 1600 LCD, 64GB, no NFC listed and four years of security updates. Samsung Singapore says “valid until 31 March 2030”, while four years from its February 2025 launch is about February 2029, so plan on early 2029.
The A07 5G suits someone who values battery life and support dates over screen quality and contactless payments. For 5G with NFC and an AMOLED screen on the smallest outlay, a refurbished Galaxy A16 5G in Very Good condition is the more rounded phone, while the refurbished Galaxy A16 4G listing remains the lowest-cost way into the same screen and cameras.
Both listings show every grade, storage size and colour on one page. Prices were checked on 5 October 2026.
Choosing a grade, and what to check when your Galaxy A16 arrives
Grades describe the outside only. Like New has no visible marks on the screen or body; Excellent shows light signs of use that are hard to spot at arm's length; Very Good has visible marks on the body with the screen in good shape. All three are fully working, tested and cleaned, with at least 85% battery health at dispatch, as the How We Test and Grade page explains. Fair isn't covered there.
Very Good to Excellent costs £9.01 more on a 128GB Galaxy A16 4G and £11.01 more on a 128GB Galaxy A16 5G. If the phone will live in a case, Very Good is usually the value choice.
The 5,000mAh on Samsung's spec sheet describes a new battery; the 85% minimum describes how much of that design capacity the battery in your phone can still hold. Samsung sells its 25W charger separately and the box has no plug, so have a USB-C charger that supports Super Fast Charging ready before the phone arrives.
IP54 means a new A16 is protected against dust and splashes. On a phone with a previous owner, treat that as a design figure rather than a promise: seals can age or be disturbed by repair, and the warranty doesn't cover liquid damage.
In the first day or two, confirm you received the model you ordered: the model code in Settings, About phone should match the listing. Install any waiting software update and note the security patch level, then record the battery health figure; our step-by-step guide to checking a used Samsung shows where to find it and what else to look at. Put your SIM in and make a call, and on the Galaxy A16 5G check that the network settings offer 5G. On either model, try the cameras, speaker, microphone, fingerprint sensor and a contactless payment.
The warranty policy lists battery defects and reduced capacity as exclusions. Check battery health when the phone arrives. A faulty battery within 30 days is still covered by your Consumer Rights Act right to reject.
Buying a Galaxy A16 from The Tech Gadgets
Every refurbished Galaxy A16 4G and Galaxy A16 5G is unlocked for EE, O2, Vodafone, Three and other UK networks, with 5G, VoLTE and Wi-Fi Calling depending on your network and plan. Phones are factory reset and signed out of the previous owner's Google and Samsung accounts before dispatch.
For a Very Good Galaxy A16 4G, that means a marked body, a sound screen, at least 85% battery health and a 12-month warranty from The Tech Gadgets, starting on delivery, covering faults that develop in normal use (not accidental or liquid damage). The refund and warranty policy has the full terms, including change-of-mind returns within 30 days if the phone is unused and complete (you pay return postage), plus your 14-day right to cancel.
Orders placed by 3pm Monday to Friday are dispatched the same day from Manchester, and standard delivery takes 1–3 working days, free over £50; the delivery and dispatch policy covers cut-offs and bank holidays. To compare other models, browse the Samsung Galaxy phones in stock.

Who should not buy either Galaxy A16
- Low-light photographers: neither model has optical stabilisation.
- Heavy gamers and multitaskers: the 4GB of RAM Samsung UK lists for 128GB versions is the ceiling you'll hit first.
- eSIM users: Samsung UK lists physical nano-SIMs only.
- Anyone needing updates well past 2030: plan on late 2030 for both.
- People who use their phone near water: IP54 covers splashes when new, and refurbished seals can't be guaranteed.
Galaxy A16 4G vs Galaxy A16 5G: buyer questions
Can a Galaxy A16 4G be upgraded to 5G later?
No. 5G depends on the modem inside the phone, so no SIM card, setting or software update can add it to the Galaxy A16 4G. A 5G SIM plan still works in it, connecting at 4G speeds. If there's a realistic chance you'll want 5G during the four or so years of support left, buy the Galaxy A16 5G now rather than paying twice later.
Will the Galaxy A16 4G still work now that 3G is switched off?
Yes. The Galaxy A16 4G uses 4G for data and, where your network and plan support it, 4G Calling for voice, so the 3G switch-off Ofcom describes doesn't affect it. Install any pending updates during set-up, and if calls misbehave, ask your network to confirm 4G Calling is enabled on your plan.
Which Galaxy A16 gets security updates for longer?
In practice, neither by much. Samsung UK lists 31 October 2030 for the Galaxy A16 5G and 31 August 2031 for the Galaxy A16 4G, but both carry the same six-year promise, which from the 4G's November 2024 UK launch points to about November 2030. Plan on late 2030 for both.
How much RAM does a 256GB Galaxy A16 have?
It depends on the unit. Samsung UK only sold both models with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, while Samsung Brazil lists an 8GB + 256GB version. The product pages say RAM in 256GB units depends on the model supplied, so message the team before ordering if RAM matters, and confirm the RAM shown in the phone's settings when it arrives.
Is Gold a UK colour for the Galaxy A16 5G?
No. Samsung UK sells the Galaxy A16 5G in Blue Black, Light Grey and Light Green. Every refurbished Galaxy A16 here is international stock whatever the colour, so box printing and the model code can differ from UK units. If you rely on VoLTE or Wi-Fi Calling, ask the team before ordering.
Do the Galaxy A16 4G and Galaxy A16 5G take the same case?
Samsung lists identical dimensions for both: 164.4 x 77.9 x 7.9mm and 200g. That makes shared cases likely, but camera cut-outs and button positions decide the fit, and Samsung doesn't publish those. Buy a case that names your exact model, or one listed for both the Galaxy A16 4G and Galaxy A16 5G.
Is the Fair grade worth the saving?
It's the cheapest way into either model: £93.99 for a 128GB Galaxy A16 4G and £119.99 for a 128GB Galaxy A16 5G. A Fair option is listed; the grading page doesn't define it, so ask the team about its condition before ordering. The 85% battery minimum is published only for Very Good, Excellent and Like New, so ask about battery health too.
Verdict: which Galaxy A16 should you buy?
For most budget buyers, the refurbished Galaxy A16 4G is the better value. You get the same screen, cameras, battery, build and, in practice, the same support horizon as the 5G model, and a Very Good 128GB phone costs £28.00 less. It suits plans without 5G, first phones and light users.
Pay the premium for the Galaxy A16 5G if your plan includes 5G and you use a lot of mobile data, or if you want a little more processor headroom and 5G until support ends around late 2030. At under £7 a year over that period, it's sensible insurance for heavier users.
Choose something else if you need a stabilised camera, eSIM, more RAM or support well past 2030; the A17 5G or a newer model will serve you better than either A16.
Choose grade, storage and colour on the product page. Prices were checked on 5 October 2026 and can change.
