Yes, a refurbished Samsung Galaxy is worth buying in the UK, provided you pick a model that still has years of Samsung security updates ahead and you buy from a seller that tests the battery and offers a warranty and returns. The Galaxy S24 and S25 families are the safest buys because Samsung promises seven years of updates on them. Older S21, S20 and S10 phones are cheaper, but Samsung no longer lists them on its regular security update schedule. This guide covers the pros and cons, which Samsung lines age best, how to check support yourself, what to expect from the battery, and who should buy new instead.
Is a refurbished Samsung phone worth it? The short answer
A refurbished Samsung is worth it when three things line up: the model is still on Samsung's monthly or quarterly security update list, the battery is in good health, and the seller gives you a warranty and returns. Meet all three and you get flagship hardware for far less than new. Miss one and the saving can disappear.
Samsung is a particularly good brand to buy refurbished, for three reasons:
- Long update promises on recent models. Samsung gives the Galaxy S24 and S25 series seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates. The Galaxy A56, A36 and A26 get up to six generations and six years.
- A public update list. Samsung publishes which models currently get monthly or quarterly security updates, so you can check before you buy.
- A deep range. We stock Galaxy phones from the A16 4G to the S25 Ultra, so there's a model for most budgets.

The pros of buying a refurbished Samsung Galaxy
The main advantages are a lower price for the same hardware, long remaining software support on recent S-series and A-series models, and a wide choice of sizes and camera set-ups. A refurbished phone from a UK seller is also unlocked and covered by a warranty and returns window.
- Flagship hardware for mid-range money. A refurbished Galaxy S24 Ultra costs noticeably less than buying new; check today's price on the product page. Samsung lists it with a 200MP main camera and 5x and 3x optical telephotos.
- Years of updates left on recent models. A phone on a seven-year policy that launched in 2024 still has most of that window ahead of it.
- Unlocked and ready. Every refurbished phone we sell is unlocked for all UK networks and signed out of the previous owner's account. That pairs well with a cheaper SIM-only plan. Our unlocked and SIM-free phones explainer shows how to work out the saving.
- Longer use from existing devices. Buying refurbished keeps a working phone in use for longer.
The cons and risks
The main risks are buying a model near the end of its security updates, receiving a worn battery, and cosmetic wear you didn't expect. You can reduce all three by checking Samsung's update list, buying a grade with a stated battery minimum, and using the returns window to inspect the phone on arrival.
- Shorter support on older models. On Samsung's current security-update scope page, the Galaxy S21, S21+, S21 Ultra, S20 family and S10 family no longer appear on the monthly or quarterly lists.
- Battery wear. Lithium-ion batteries lose capacity with use. Our Like New, Excellent and Very Good grades carry at least 85% battery health measured at dispatch. The battery isn't covered for wear under our warranty, though (more below).
- Not Samsung-refurbished. Our phones are refurbished by The Tech Gadgets, not by Samsung. You get our 12-month warranty rather than Samsung's manufacturer warranty.
- Cosmetic variation. Grades describe wear. A Very Good phone has visible marks on the body, and Fair shows the most visible wear.
Which Samsung Galaxy lines age best: S, FE or A?
The S series ages best, because Samsung gives recent S models its longest update promises and its best cameras and build. FE models sit in between and share the S-series policy from the S24 FE onward. The A series is the value choice: recent A56, A36 and A26 models get up to six years, but older A models are on shorter, quarterly schedules.
| Line | Models we stock | Samsung update policy / current status | Ages well because… |
|---|---|---|---|
| Galaxy S (current) | S25, S25+, S25 Ultra, S25 Edge, S24, S24+, S24 Ultra | 7 OS generations + 7 years security (S24, S25). Monthly security list. | Longest support, best cameras, flagship build |
| Galaxy S (previous) | S23, S23+, S23 Ultra | 4 years of One UI upgrades + 5 years security. Monthly security list. | Strong hardware at a lower price; shorter runway |
| Galaxy S (older) | S22 family | Quarterly security list | Cheap flagship feel; limited time left |
| Galaxy S (oldest) | S21, S21+, S21 Ultra, S20 family, S10 family | Not on Samsung's current monthly or quarterly lists | Lowest price; best as a backup phone |
| Galaxy FE | S24 FE, S21 FE, S20 FE | S24 FE: 7 + 7 years. S21 FE: quarterly list. S20 FE: not on current lists. | The S24 FE is the long-life FE pick |
| Galaxy A | A56, A36, A26, A17 5G, A16 5G, A16 4G | A56/A36/A26: up to 6 OS generations + 6 years security. A56 is on the monthly list; the others are quarterly. | Long support for the price; modest cameras |
Status checked against Samsung's security-update scope page on 2 October 2026. Samsung says the list is reviewed periodically, so it changes over time.
The practical takeaway: for a phone you'll keep three or more years, buy from the S24, S25 or recent A families. The S23 is a sound middle ground if the price gap matters. S22 and older make sense only as a budget or backup handset. For model-by-model picks, see the best refurbished Samsung phones for 2026. For the A series, see our Galaxy A series guide.
How do I check a Samsung's software support before buying?
Check the model on Samsung's security-update scope page (security.samsungmobile.com). It lists which Galaxy phones currently get monthly or quarterly security updates. If a model isn't on either list, assume it is no longer on Samsung's regular schedule. Then check the announced OS-upgrade policy for that model in Samsung's launch announcement.
Three checks, in order:
- Samsung's scope page. Monthly is best, quarterly is acceptable for a budget phone, and absent means its regular updates have ended.
- The launch policy. Samsung's announcements state the number of OS generations and years of security updates, for example seven and seven for the S24 and S25 series. Samsung counts these from the model's launch, not from when you buy it.
- The phone itself, on arrival. Open Settings, then Software update, and install anything pending. Then check the Android security patch level shown in the phone's software information.
Under the UK's Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure (PSTI) law, in force since 29 April 2024, manufacturers must publish the minimum period a product will receive security updates. Samsung's UK newsroom points buyers to its security reporting site for those periods.
What about the battery on a refurbished Samsung?
Every Like New, Excellent and Very Good Samsung we sell has at least 85% battery health measured at dispatch. Our 12-month warranty excludes battery defects and reduced capacity, so the dispatch figure is your protection. Check the battery as soon as the phone arrives, and use the returns window if anything looks wrong.
How to check a Galaxy battery yourself, per Samsung UK's support guidance:
- Open the Samsung Members app.
- Tap Support.
- Tap Get started under Phone diagnostics, then run the battery check.
- Samsung reports the result as Normal, Weak or Bad.
Two points about the warranty exclusion. First, battery wear is gradual, so a phone dispatched at 85% or above should serve normal daily use well. Second, if the phone has a fault in the first days, that's what the returns window is for: report faults, wrong items or damage within 3 days of delivery. If you expect to need a battery replacement later in the phone's life, our guide to refurbished flagship repair and warranty costs shows how to budget for it.
How to reduce the risks when buying a refurbished Samsung
Buy a model still on Samsung's update list. Choose a grade with a stated battery minimum. Make sure the phone is unlocked and signed out of the previous owner's account. Then test it thoroughly in the first three days. Those steps cover the main ways a used Samsung goes wrong.
A day-one checklist:
- Account: the phone should set up with your own Samsung and Google accounts, with no prompt for a previous owner's details. Ours are signed out before dispatch.
- Network: insert your SIM or add your eSIM, then make a call and use mobile data with Wi-Fi off.
- Battery: run Samsung Members diagnostics as described above.
- Screen: display a white and then a black full-screen image to spot marks, dead pixels or tinting.
- Cameras, speakers and microphones: take photos on every lens, record a short video, and make a speakerphone call.
- Charging: charge with a known-good cable and charger, and test wireless charging if your model supports it.
- Biometrics: register a fingerprint and confirm it unlocks reliably.
Our returns policy gives you 30 days from delivery, and faults must be reported within 3 days. You also have the 14-day legal right to cancel an online order. On a change-of-mind return you pay the return postage, and deductions may apply if seals are broken. Full details are in our refund policy.

Who should buy a new Samsung instead?
Buy new if you want Samsung's own manufacturer warranty, the very latest model, a sealed box, or a phone you'll keep for its entire update life from day one. Buy new, too, if you're paying monthly through a network and value the bundled credit. For most other buyers, a recent refurbished Galaxy is the better-value choice.
- You want maximum years from launch. Even the newest refurbished model is part-way through its update window.
- You need a manufacturer warranty. A business purchasing policy may require one, for example.
- You're set on the latest model. We stock Galaxy S models up to the S25 series, and some recent A-series phones as brand new or open box (activated). Brand-new items come with the manufacturer warranty.

Frequently asked questions
Are refurbished Samsung phones reliable?
A recent refurbished Galaxy that has been tested, factory reset and graded is generally a reliable buy. Reliability depends most on battery health and software support. Our Like New, Excellent and Very Good phones have at least 85% battery health at dispatch and a 12-month warranty against manufacturing defects and functional faults.
What is the best used Samsung phone to buy?
For most people, the Galaxy S24. It's compact at 6.2 inches and on Samsung's seven-year update policy. For the best camera, choose the S24 Ultra. On a tighter budget, the Galaxy A56 5G offers up to six years of support at a lower price.
How long will a refurbished Samsung get updates?
It depends on the model, and Samsung counts from launch. The S24 and S25 series get seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates. The S23 series gets four years of One UI upgrades and five years of security updates. The A56, A36 and A26 get up to six of each.
Is a refurbished Galaxy S21 or S20 still worth buying?
Only as a low-cost or backup phone. On Samsung's current security-update scope page, the S21, S21+, S21 Ultra and S20 family are no longer listed for monthly or quarterly updates. For everyday banking and payments, choose a model that's still on the list.
Does the warranty cover the battery on a refurbished Samsung?
No. Our 12-month warranty excludes battery defects and reduced capacity. Instead, our Like New, Excellent and Very Good phones are dispatched with at least 85% battery health. Check it on arrival using Samsung Members Phone diagnostics, and report any fault within 3 days of delivery.
Is a refurbished Samsung unlocked?
Yes. Every refurbished phone we sell is unlocked for all UK networks and signed out of the previous owner's account. Samsung UK lists eSIM support on the Galaxy S20 to S26 families, with the caveat that eSIM may not work on some units depending on country of origin.
Should I buy a refurbished Samsung or a refurbished iPhone?
Choose Samsung for a wider range of sizes and prices, stronger zoom cameras on the Ultras, and seven-year support on recent S models. Choose iPhone if you're already invested in Apple's ecosystem. Our guide to whether a refurbished iPhone is worth buying covers the Apple side.
