If you want a Galaxy A phone that's still getting security updates in 2031, buy a model with a six-year promise: the A16, A17, A26, A36 and A56 families and most newer models carry one. The A33 5G and A53 5G run out around March 2027, and the A34 5G, A35 5G, A54 5G and A55 5G at 31 March 2028 on Samsung UK's own dates. For supported years per pound, the refurbished Galaxy A16 4G leads the Samsung UK range at The Tech Gadgets: about 4.1 years (48.9 months) of support from £100.99 for 128GB in Very Good (checked 5 October 2026).
The main limitation is Samsung's own paperwork. For five models its published dates disagree with its promises, so this guide plans around the earlier date in each case.
Grade, storage and colour are chosen on the product page. Prices were checked on 5 October 2026 and can change.
Quick decision: which Galaxy A phones stay supported longest?
- Best for keeping five years or more: the Galaxy A27 5G, A37 5G and A57 5G (Open Box, international stock) and the Brand New Galaxy A07 5G, all with Samsung dates in 2032.
- Best value per supported year: the refurbished Galaxy A16 4G and A16 5G, with support to late 2030 from £100.99 and £128.99 in Very Good.
- Consider an alternative when: you're looking at an A33 5G or A53 5G for more than a few months, or an A34 5G, A35 5G, A54 5G or A55 5G for more than about 18 months.
- Check before buying: whether the model is in Samsung's UK range and, as all Galaxy A stock here is international, whether you rely on Wi-Fi Calling or 4G calling.
Support dates for all 24 Galaxy A models at The Tech Gadgets
How to read it. “Commitment” is Samsung's launch promise: Android upgrades (OS) and years of security updates. “Valid until” is the end date on Samsung's specification page, from Samsung UK unless another Samsung regional site is named. The planning date is the earlier of that date and the date the promise implies; with no printed date, we count the promised years from the launch month. Months left = days from 5 October 2026 to the planning date ÷ 30.44; years = months ÷ 12, both to one decimal place. Prices are the cheapest option at a defined condition (Very Good for refurbished), with the storage shown, checked 5 October 2026.

“Open Box” means Open Box (Activated). Launch months are from Samsung newsrooms, except the A15 5G's, which comes from the UK tech press. Where a product listing shows a different date (the A35 5G and A55 5G listings say March 2029, the A33 5G listing April 2027), this guide follows Samsung's pages. One exception to the method: for the A16 4G we use its sister A16 5G's 31 October 2030, slightly earlier than six years from the A16 4G's November 2024 UK launch.
Where Samsung's own support dates disagree
For five models, the “valid until” date on Samsung's own page doesn't match the support Samsung promised at launch: the A16 4G, A06 5G, A35 5G, A55 5G and A56 5G. Three dates run later than the promise and two run earlier. We plan around whichever is earlier, so you're never relying on a date Samsung might not honour.
- Galaxy A16 4G. Samsung UK prints 31 August 2031, but six years from the November 2024 UK launch is about November 2030, and the A16 5G, launched alongside it, carries 31 October 2030. We use that slightly earlier 31 October 2030; if Samsung's printed date holds, you gain about ten months.
- Galaxy A06 5G. Samsung Singapore prints 31 March 2030, but four years from the February 2025 launch is about February 2029. We use February 2029.
- Galaxy A35 5G and A55 5G. Five years from a March 2024 launch suggests about March 2029, but Samsung UK prints 31 March 2028 for both. We use 2028.
- Galaxy A56 5G. Samsung UK prints 31 March 2032, the same as the newer A37 5G and A57 5G, but six years from March 2025 is about March 2031. We use 2031.
Two smaller gaps sit outside that list. Samsung no longer publishes a UK page for the A53 5G, so its date is our calculation, matching the 31 March 2027 printed for the A33 5G, announced the same day. The A18's 31 October 2032 implies an October launch, but Samsung announced it in September 2026, so we use September 2032. So plan the A35 5G and A55 5G for the short term, and treat any extra time on the A16 4G and A56 5G as a bonus.
What do security updates do, and what happens when they stop?
Samsung's security updates patch Android vulnerabilities published by Google plus Samsung's own software issues. When they stop, the phone keeps working, but newly found flaws stay open. The UK's National Cyber Security Centre advises against buying or using phones that are no longer supported, so plan to replace a phone around its end date.
Samsung explains on its security updates scope page that its firmware updates carry Google's Android patches and fixes for Samsung-specific issues. Apps update separately through Google Play or the Galaxy Store, so they can keep updating after the firmware stops, but that doesn't patch the operating system underneath.
Banking apps
Banks set their own minimum requirements for their apps and publish them in their own help pages, not in any Samsung document. We can't say when a particular bank will drop a particular phone, so check your bank's stated requirements before buying an older model.
Resale
If you sell the phone later, the next buyer will weigh its remaining support, so that runway is part of what you're paying for even if you won't be the last owner.
Monthly or quarterly?
On 5 October 2026, Samsung's scope page listed the A06, A06 5G, A07, A07 5G, A15 5G, A16, A16 5G, A17, A17 5G, A26 5G, A27 5G, A33 5G, A34 5G, A35 5G, A36 5G and A37 5G under quarterly updates. Samsung lists the A54 5G to A57 5G only as Enterprise Models under monthly updates, and the A53 5G only as an Enterprise Model under quarterly updates, so we don't state a frequency for the standard versions sold here and infer nothing about their end dates. The A07s, A08 and A18 weren't listed yet. Samsung notes the lists change and timing can vary by market, network and model.
Which Galaxy A phones give the most supported years per £100?
The Open Box Galaxy A07s and the refurbished Galaxy A16 4G give the most: about 4.3 and 4.1 supported years for every £100 spent. Among phones in Samsung's UK range, the A16 4G is clearly ahead. The A33 5G and A53 5G give the least, at about half a year per £100.
Method: years left from the master table, divided by the from-price in hundreds of pounds. For the A16 4G (Very Good, 128GB) that's 4.1 ÷ (£100.99 ÷ 100) = 4.06. The figure ignores everything except support and price, so read it alongside the hardware.
| Rank | Model and condition | Calculation | Years per £100 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Galaxy A07s (4G), Open Box international, 64GB | 5.9 ÷ 1.3799 | 4.28 |
| 2 | Galaxy A16 4G, Very Good 128GB | 4.1 ÷ 1.0099 | 4.06 |
| 3 | Galaxy A07 5G, Brand New 64GB | 5.3 ÷ 1.3399 | 3.96 |
| 4 | Galaxy A07 (4G), Brand New 64GB | 4.9 ÷ 1.2899 | 3.80 |
| 5 | Galaxy A08 (4G), Open Box international, 64GB | 6.0 ÷ 1.5999 | 3.75 |
| 6 | Galaxy A16 5G, Very Good 128GB | 4.1 ÷ 1.2899 | 3.18 |
| 7 | Galaxy A17 4G, Brand New 128GB | 5.0 ÷ 1.6799 | 2.98 |
| 8 | Galaxy A17 5G, Very Good 128GB | 4.9 ÷ 1.6599 | 2.95 |
| 9 | Galaxy A26 5G, Very Good 128GB | 4.5 ÷ 1.6599 | 2.71 |
| 10 | Galaxy A18 (4G), Open Box international, 128GB | 6.0 ÷ 2.3900 | 2.51 |
| 11 | Galaxy A27 5G, Open Box international, 128GB | 5.8 ÷ 2.3399 | 2.48 |
| 12 | Galaxy A36 5G, Very Good 128GB | 4.5 ÷ 2.1199 | 2.12 |
| 13 | Galaxy A37 5G, Open Box international, 128GB | 5.5 ÷ 2.7348 | 2.01 |
| 14 | Galaxy A06 5G, Brand New 64GB | 2.4 ÷ 1.2099 | 1.98 |
| 15 | Galaxy A57 5G, Open Box international, 128GB | 5.5 ÷ 2.7899 | 1.97 |
| 16 | Galaxy A56 5G, Very Good 128GB | 4.5 ÷ 2.4399 | 1.84 |
| 17 | Galaxy A06 (4G), Brand New 64GB | 1.9 ÷ 1.1599 | 1.64 |
| 18 | Galaxy A15 5G, Brand New 128GB | 2.3 ÷ 1.6399 | 1.40 |
| 19 | Galaxy A54 5G, Very Good 128GB | 1.5 ÷ 1.2499 | 1.20 |
| 20 | Galaxy A34 5G, Very Good 128GB | 1.5 ÷ 1.3199 | 1.14 |
| 21 | Galaxy A35 5G, Very Good 128GB | 1.5 ÷ 1.3699 | 1.09 |
| 22 | Galaxy A55 5G, Very Good 128GB | 1.5 ÷ 1.7999 | 0.83 |
| 23 | Galaxy A53 5G, Very Good 128GB | 0.5 ÷ 0.9399 | 0.53 |
| 24 | Galaxy A33 5G, Very Good 128GB | 0.5 ÷ 1.2399 | 0.40 |
Three patterns stand out. The top five are cheap, recent phones, four of them outside Samsung's UK range; the stock-origin points below apply to every phone here. The refurbished A16 4G and A16 5G rank best within Samsung's UK range, with six-year promises running to late 2030. The older A34 5G, A35 5G, A54 5G and A55 5G rank low despite better cameras and IP67, because support ends in 2028. Several refurbished listings also show a cheaper Fair option; the grading page doesn't define it, so it's excluded here; ask the team about its condition before ordering.
Why does the budget Galaxy A07 outlast the Galaxy A53 5G?
Because Samsung counts support from launch, and the promises got longer. The A53 5G launched in March 2022 with four Android upgrades and five years of security updates, ending around March 2027. The A07 launched in September 2025 with six of each, and Samsung's Singapore page dates it to 31 August 2031.
The A53 5G is the better-built phone: Samsung specifies a 120Hz Super AMOLED screen, a 64MP main camera with optical stabilisation and IP67. The A07 has a 90Hz HD+ LCD and IP54. But the support clock starts at launch, not when you buy, and the A53 has used most of its time. Samsung's scope page says that, as of January 2024, it is extending security support for Galaxy devices by up to seven years. In our table, models launched from 2022 to March 2024 (A33, A34, A35, A53, A54, A55, A15 5G) carry four Android upgrades and five years of security updates; from the A16 series in late 2024, six of each is the norm, the A06 pair excepted.
The same arithmetic covers Android versions: the A53 5G launched on Android 12, so four upgrades reach Android 16, while the A07's six from Android 15 reach Android 21. For the next few months, the refurbished Galaxy A53 5G at £93.99 (Very Good, 128GB) is cheap; for the next few years, it isn't the right tool.
Which Galaxy A to buy by how long you keep your phone
Match the planning date to when you expect to replace the phone, then choose hardware within that shortlist.
Keeping it 1–2 years
Almost any model works except the A33 5G and A53 5G, whose support ends in spring 2027. The A34 5G, A35 5G, A54 5G and A55 5G reach only 31 March 2028, so treat them as one-year phones with some margin. The cheapest sensible choice is the A16 4G at £100.99 (Very Good, 128GB), with more than four years in hand. If camera quality matters for a short spell, the same-grade A54 5G at £124.99 adds optical stabilisation and IP67 for £24.00 more (£124.99 − £100.99), with 2.6 fewer years of support.
Keeping it 3–4 years
You need a planning date in late 2030 or beyond. The A16 5G (£128.99, Very Good, 128GB) reaches 31 October 2030, just over four years. The A26 5G reaches 31 March 2031 for £165.99, adding IP67 and a 120Hz screen for £37.00 more (£165.99 − £128.99). The refurbished Galaxy A17 5G costs the same £165.99 and runs five months longer, to 31 August 2031, with IP54 and a 90Hz screen instead. Choose the A26 5G for screen and water resistance, the A17 5G for runway.
Keeping it 5 years or more
Every phone here that clears five full years from October 2026 is either Open Box international stock or a Brand New model outside Samsung's UK range. The Brand New Galaxy A07 5G runs to 31 January 2032 from £133.99. The Open Box Galaxy A27, A37 and A57 listings run to July 2032 (A27 5G, from £233.99) and March 2032 (A37 5G from £273.48, A57 5G from £278.99). The A27 5G costs £100.00 more than the A07 5G (£233.99 − £133.99) and swaps the HD+ LCD for a Full HD+ Super AMOLED screen, moves from IP54 to IP64 and has optical stabilisation on its main camera. The A57 5G is £45.00 more than the A27 5G (£278.99 − £233.99) for IP68, 45W charging and the Exynos 1680, with four months less support. Like every Galaxy A phone here, all four are international stock that Samsung UK may not repair under its warranty; The Tech Gadgets' 12-month warranty applies (see below). The Brand New Galaxy A17 4G (£167.99, to 30 September 2031) falls just short of five years but is the longest-supported sealed phone from Samsung's UK range here.
Prices checked on 5 October 2026. Condition, storage and colour are chosen on each product page.
Condition, stock origin and the checks that protect your update runway
Support is set per model, so a refurbished or Open Box phone runs to the same end date as a new one. What can differ is where it came from.
Every Galaxy A phone The Tech Gadgets sells, whatever its condition, is international stock. The Galaxy A06, A06 5G, A07 and A07 5G are brand new and sealed, sold unlocked for UK networks by The Tech Gadgets, but Samsung doesn't list these models on its UK website; their dates come from Samsung's Levant, Singapore, Malaysia and India pages. The A07s, A08, A18, A27, A37 and A57 listings are Open Box (Activated). Samsung's footnote says update timing can vary by market and network, so an international unit may not update on the same day as Samsung UK stock. The model code may differ from UK units, and on the Brand New and Open Box phones, box printing and contents follow the market the phone was made for and may not include a UK plug. Samsung UK may not carry out manufacturer warranty repairs on non-UK units, which is why The Tech Gadgets' own 12-month warranty applies. If you rely on Wi-Fi Calling or 4G Calling (VoLTE) on a particular network, ask the team before ordering any Galaxy A phone here.
For refurbished phones, condition is cosmetic and support is unaffected. The three defined grades (Like New, Excellent, Very Good) are dispatched with at least 85% battery health (the share of its original design capacity the battery can still hold), as set out in The Tech Gadgets' testing and grading standards. That's a measure of the individual battery, separate from Samsung's 5,000mAh capacity rating. Official IP ratings describe the design when new; seals can age or be disturbed by repair, so no refurbished or opened phone is guaranteed to keep that water resistance.
When the phone arrives, check three things in Settings: that a software update search runs and completes, the Android security patch level under the software information in About phone, and the model code. Install anything waiting before you move your accounts across.
Buying a long-supported Galaxy A from The Tech Gadgets
Refurbished and Open Box phones come with a 12-month warranty from The Tech Gadgets, starting on delivery, covering faults that develop in normal use (not accidental or liquid damage). For Brand New items, the product page and returns policy list a 12-month warranty from The Tech Gadgets. Battery defects and reduced capacity are listed as exclusions in the warranty policy, so check battery health when the phone arrives, and remember a faulty battery within 30 days is still covered by your Consumer Rights Act right to reject. If the phone isn't right, change-of-mind returns are accepted within 30 days if it's unused and complete (you pay return postage), on top of your 14-day right to cancel. The full terms are in the refund and warranty policy.
Orders placed by 3pm Monday to Friday are dispatched the same day from Manchester; standard delivery is 1–3 working days and free over £50. Galaxy A software update questions
How long does Samsung support Galaxy A-series phones?
It depends on the model and launch date. In our table, phones launched from 2022 to March 2024 carry four Android upgrades and five years of security updates; most from late 2024 onwards carry six of each, except the A06 (two and four) and A06 5G (four and four). Check Samsung's page for the exact model.
When do security updates end for the Galaxy A53 5G?
Around March 2027. Samsung promised five years of security updates from the A53 5G's March 2022 launch but no longer publishes a UK end date, so that's our calculation. It matches the 31 March 2027 Samsung UK date for the A33 5G, announced the same day: roughly half a year from October 2026.
Does the Galaxy A53 5G's promise include Android 13?
Yes. The A53 5G launched with Android 12 and One UI 4.1, and Samsung promised up to four generations of Android upgrades, so Android 13 was the first of them and the promise runs to Android 16. A refurbished unit's installed version depends on its update history, so run a software update check after setting it up.
Do the Galaxy A35 5G and A55 5G get updates until 2028 or 2029?
Samsung's promise (five years from March 2024) points to about March 2029, but Samsung UK's own pages print 31 March 2028 for both. Until Samsung resolves that, plan on 2028. If the later date proves right, treat the extra year as a bonus rather than a reason to buy, at the A35 5G's £136.99 or the A55 5G's £179.99 (Very Good, 128GB).
Will a refurbished Galaxy A get the same updates as a new one?
Yes. Samsung's commitments apply to the model, not its condition, so a refurbished A26 5G runs to the same 31 March 2031 as a new one. What can differ is stock origin: Samsung says timing can vary by market and network, and every Galaxy A sold here, refurbished included, is international stock.
Can I keep using a Galaxy A after security updates stop?
It will keep working, and apps can keep updating through the app stores, but the operating system stops getting fixes for newly found flaws. The National Cyber Security Centre advises against using unsupported phones, so if you bank or shop on it, replace it around its end date.
Which Galaxy A at The Tech Gadgets has the longest support?
The Galaxy A08 and Galaxy A18, both Open Box (Activated) international stock, at about 6.0 years each from October 2026 (we plan the A18 on September 2032; Samsung UK prints 31 October 2032). Among Samsung UK-range refurbished phones, the A17 5G runs longest on our planning dates, to 31 August 2031. The longest Open Box option with 5G is the A27 5G, to 31 July 2032.
Verdict: the Galaxy A to buy for long-term support
For most buyers, the best balance of price and runway is a refurbished phone from Samsung's UK range with a six-year promise: the A16 4G if budget leads (about 4.1 years for £100.99), the A26 5G or A17 5G at £165.99 for a better-specified phone running into 2031. Like all Galaxy A stock here, the units are international, covered by The Tech Gadgets' 12-month warranty. If you keep phones five years or more and accept an Open Box phone, the A27 5G, A37 5G and A57 5G all run into 2032.
Choose something else if you want an A33 5G or A53 5G as more than a stopgap, or you're paying A55 5G prices for about 18 more months of support on Samsung UK's date. When support length matters most, spend on runway first and hardware second.
