01Network and SIM
An unlocked iPhone XR works on EE, O2, Vodafone, Three, giffgaff and other UK networks over 4G LTE; there's no 5G. Unlike the iPhone X, it supports eSIM alongside a nano-SIM, so Dual SIM and eSIM-only plans work.
02Display
Apple specifies a 6.1-inch Liquid Retina HD LCD at 1792 x 828 (326 ppi) and 625 nits, with Haptic Touch rather than 3D Touch. It's the same size and resolution as the iPhone 11.
03Performance and storage
The A12 Bionic, shared with the XS and XS Max, copes well with messaging, streaming and browsing, and is quicker than the A11 in the iPhone X. Storage can't be expanded, so the iPhone XR 128GB is worth it if you keep lots of photos.
04Cameras
There's one rear camera: Apple's 12MP Wide at f/1.8, with Portrait mode. The front camera is 7MP. There's no telephoto, Ultra Wide or Night mode, so for low light or zoom, the iPhone 11 is the step up.
05Battery and charging
Apple rated the XR at up to 16 hours of video playback when new, more than the iPhone X, XS or XS Max. A used battery won't match that, so every grade has at least 85% battery health at dispatch. It charges via Lightning and Qi wireless; no MagSafe.
06Software updates
The XR's last major version is iOS 18. It isn't on Apple's iOS 26 or iOS 27 lists. Apple still publishes iOS 18 security fixes for it, most recently iOS 18.7.10 on 17 August 2026, without saying for how long. Some apps will drop iOS 18 over time.

Is a refurbished iPhone XR worth buying in 2026?
For light use on a budget, yes; as a long-term main phone, no. At £119.99 it's one of the cheapest ways to get a Face ID iPhone that still receives security updates. It suits a kid's first phone, a work spare or a backup. For current iOS, the iPhone 11 costs £80 more.
Who it's for
Good for teenagers, older relatives or anyone who mainly uses WhatsApp, calls and the web. It's a cheap iPhone XR with a 12-month warranty, which a second hand iPhone XR from a private seller rarely has. For better cameras and longer support, compare the iPhone 11.

Is the iPhone XR still worth buying in 2026?
Yes, as a low-cost first phone, spare or light-use iPhone. It won't get iOS 26 or 27, so it isn't the best choice for a phone you'll keep for years.
Is it unlocked?
Yes. It works on any UK network and supports a nano-SIM, an eSIM or both.
Does the iPhone XR get iOS 26 or iOS 27?
No. iOS 18 is its last major version. Apple still releases iOS 18 security fixes for it, most recently on 17 August 2026.
iPhone XR or iPhone 11?
Choose the iPhone 11 for iOS 27, a second camera and Night mode. The XR is about £80 cheaper here.
What battery health will I get?
