Samsung Galaxy A18 vs A17: Is the Open Box A18 Worth £71 More?

The Open Box Galaxy A18 costs £71.01 more than a sealed Galaxy A17 (4G). We set out what that money buys (about a year more of updates, IP64 and a newer chip), what it doesn't (5G, a better-specified camera), and when a refurbished A17 5G beats both.

For most people buying a new-condition Samsung for around £170, the brand-new Galaxy A17 (4G) at £167.99 is a better buy than the Open Box Galaxy A18 at £239.00. The extra £71.01 gets the A18 about one more year of Samsung security updates, IP64 dust protection, a newer Exynos 1610 chip and Android 17 from day one. Both phones are 4G only, though, and the specs list the same screen, battery and camera resolutions. Samsung UK also lists optical image stabilisation (OIS) on the A17's main camera but not on the A18's.

The A18 makes sense if you'll keep your phone into the 2030s. If you want 5G, neither will do: the refurbished Galaxy A17 5G is £165.99 in Very Good condition (prices checked 5 October 2026).

Galaxy A18 or Galaxy A17: the quick decision

  • Best for most buyers: Galaxy A17 (4G), Brand New, 128GB, from £167.99. It comes sealed, Samsung UK lists OIS on its main camera, and security updates run to 30 September 2031.
  • Best for the longest support on a 4G phone: Galaxy A18 (4G), Open Box (Activated), International Version, 128GB, £239.00: updates listed to 31 October 2032, IP64, and The Tech Gadgets' warranty because Samsung UK may not service international units.
  • Consider an alternative when: you need 5G (the refurbished Galaxy A17 5G), or you're happy to spend A18 money anyway. An Open Box (Activated) Galaxy A27 5G 128GB, also international stock, is £233.99: £5.01 less than the A18, with 5G.
  • Check before buying: every Galaxy A-series phone here, new, Open Box or refurbished, is international stock. Box printing and the model code may differ from UK units, Samsung UK may not carry out warranty repairs on non-UK units (The Tech Gadgets' 12-month warranty is your cover), and if you rely on Wi-Fi Calling or 4G Calling (VoLTE) with a particular network, ask the team before ordering.

Samsung A17 price vs A18 price: what does the extra £71.01 buy?

The Galaxy A18 Open Box 128GB costs £239.00 and the Galaxy A17 (4G) Brand New 128GB costs £167.99, so the A18 is £71.01 more. For that you get roughly 12 to 13 more months of security updates, IP64 instead of IP54, the newer Exynos 1610 chip and Android 17 out of the box. You don't get 5G, a bigger battery, faster charging or more storage.

Now spread each price over the support left. From 5 October 2026 to 30 September 2031, the A17 (4G) has 59.8 months of security updates, which is £2.81 per month of support (£167.99 ÷ 59.8). On the earlier of its two dates, 30 September 2032 (explained below), the A18 has 71.8 months, or £3.33 a month (£239.00 ÷ 71.8). Its extra 12.0 months cost about £5.92 each (£71.01 ÷ 12.0), around double the A17's rate. If you replace phones every two or three years, that extra year is worth very little to you.

Is the Samsung A18 5G? No, and that narrows your choice

No. Samsung announced the Galaxy A18 on 15 September 2026 as a 4G phone, model code SM-A185F, and its UK specification lists 2G, 3G and 4G only. When The Tech Gadgets checked Samsung's UK, French and global sites on 5 October 2026, there was no official Galaxy A18 5G. In this comparison, only the refurbished Galaxy A17 5G has 5G.

For calls, messages, maps and streaming, 4G is enough for most people. The A18 listing adds a detail for an international phone: it supports the main UK 4G bands (1, 3, 7, 8, 20, 38 and 40) but not band 32, which only adds extra download capacity on some networks. Because UK 3G has been switched off, a 4G phone makes calls using 4G Calling (VoLTE), and the listing says support for this on international software can vary by network. For 4G against 5G within the A17 family, see our Galaxy A17 4G vs 5G comparison.

Does the Exynos 1610 make the Galaxy A18 noticeably faster?

On paper, the A18 has the newer chip. Samsung names the Exynos 1610 with a top CPU speed of 2.4GHz, against 2.2GHz on the A17 (4G), which GSMArena identifies as a MediaTek Helio G99. The Tech Gadgets hasn't benchmarked either, so we can't say how big the step is in daily use.

Both have 4GB of RAM, so don't expect the A18 to keep more apps open. Samsung's UK page also says the A18's chipset “may vary depending on country and carrier”, and the unit sold here is the international version, so ask the team to confirm the model code if the exact chip matters.

Camera: why the cheaper Galaxy A17 is the safer choice for video

Both phones list a 50MP main camera, 5MP ultra-wide, 2MP macro and 13MP selfie camera. The difference is stabilisation. Samsung UK lists OIS on the A17 (4G) main camera and “OIS: No” for the A18. Some third-party spec sites say the A18 has OIS, and Samsung France's announcement doesn't mention it either way. Until Samsung confirms it, we don't count it as an A18 feature.

Optical stabilisation physically moves part of the camera to counter hand shake. It helps most with handheld video while walking and with photos in dim rooms; for daylight photos it matters less. Samsung UK lists it on both A17 models, so don't pay the extra £71.01 expecting better video.

Screen, glass and dust: what IP64 vs IP54 means

Both screens are 6.7-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED panels at up to 90Hz. The A18 is rated IP64 and the A17 (4G) IP54. The second digit, 4, means the same splash protection on both; the A18's first digit, 6, means dust-tight rather than dust-protected. Unusually, Samsung UK lists the newer Gorilla Glass Victus+ on the cheaper A17 and Gorilla Glass 3 on the A18.

Neither rating means the phone can go underwater. IP64 is a real upgrade on building sites or in workshops, less so for desk jobs. A case will do more than either glass type.

An IP rating describes Samsung's design when new. An Open Box A18 has been unboxed and switched on, and a refurbished A17 5G has had a previous owner, so don't treat either as having guaranteed factory water resistance: seals can age or be disturbed. Liquid damage is excluded from the warranty whichever condition you buy.

Software updates: how much longer will the Galaxy A18 be supported?

Samsung UK lists security updates for the A18 until 31 October 2032 (Samsung UK's date for the UK model) and for the A17 (4G) until 30 September 2031, about 13 months more for the A18. Both are promised six Android upgrades, but the A18 starts on Android 17 and the A17 started on Android 15, so the A18's last upgrade should arrive two Android versions later.

One qualification: Samsung promises up to six years of security updates “from the first global launch date”, and the A18 was announced on 15 September 2026, so six years ends in September 2032, a month before the UK date. The two don't line up, so we use the earlier one, 30 September 2032, the same date Samsung gives the Galaxy A08 launched that month. The gap over the A17 (4G) is then 12.0 months, or 13.1 on the UK date.

Battery and charging: the same specification, different starting points

Both phones have a 5,000mAh battery (Samsung's typical figure) and 25W wired charging. Samsung quotes 50% in 30 minutes for the A18, while the A17's 25W figure comes from GSMArena. Neither lists wireless charging. The real difference is condition: the A17 (4G) arrives sealed, the A18 has been activated once, and a refurbished A17 5G has at least 85% battery health at dispatch on its defined grades.

The A18 listing doesn't publish a battery-health figure, so check it on arrival. On a refurbished A17 5G, that 85% is a minimum at dispatch, not a promise for the life of the phone.

Sealed new, newer Open Box or refurbished 5G: which trade-off suits you?

Choose the sealed Galaxy A17 (4G) if an untouched box and the lower of the two new-condition prices matter most. Choose the Open Box A18 if you want the longest support and IP64. Choose the refurbished A17 5G if 5G and OIS matter more to you than owning a phone nobody has used before.

Choose the Galaxy A17 (4G), Brand New, when you want a sealed phone, care about steady video and will replace it within five years. Choose the Galaxy A18, Open Box, instead when you'll keep the phone into 2032 and work somewhere dusty. Choose the refurbished Galaxy A17 5G instead when you need 5G or want the OIS camera for less, and can accept a used phone.

The A18's box contents also follow the market it was made for and may not include a UK mains plug. Our guide to international stock and refurbished phones explains how packaging, software and warranty arrangements can differ.

When does a refurbished Galaxy A17 5G beat both?

It wins if you want 5G or to spend less. The refurbished Galaxy A17 5G 128GB in Very Good condition costs £165.99: £2.00 less than the new A17 (4G) and £73.01 less than the A18. It adds 5G, keeps OIS and gets updates to 31 August 2031. The trade-off is a used phone with visible body marks and at least 85% battery health at dispatch rather than a new battery.

Other grades, 128GB unless stated:

  • Excellent, £180.00: £12.01 more than the Galaxy A17 (4G) Brand New (£180.00 − £167.99) and £59.00 less than the Galaxy A18 Open Box (£239.00 − £180.00). Light signs of use, hard to spot at arm's length.
  • Like New, £197.99: £30.00 more than the A17 (4G) Brand New and £41.01 less than the A18 Open Box. No visible marks on the screen or body.
  • Like New 256GB, £216.99: £22.01 less than the A18 Open Box, with double the storage and 5G.
  • Fair, £154.99: £13.00 less than the A17 (4G) Brand New. A Fair option is listed; the grading page doesn't define it, so ask the team about its condition before ordering.

The refurbished Galaxy A17 5G listing also shows a Brand New option at £198.99 (checked 5 October 2026). We don't base advice on it; ask the team what it covers if it interests you. Other Galaxy phones worth a look at this budget

If you're prepared to pay £239.00 for an A18, look at the Galaxy A27 5G first. An Open Box (Activated) Galaxy A27 5G 128GB is listed at £233.99, which is £5.01 less (£239.00 − £233.99). Samsung specifies a Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 chip, a 120Hz display, OIS on the main camera, the same IP64 rating and 5G, with UK security updates until 31 July 2032, three months before the A18's UK date.

The A18's qualification applies here too: the A27 listings say this is international stock (UAE or Europe), activated once, and Samsung UK may not service it, so The Tech Gadgets' 12-month warranty is your cover. You'll find them among the Open Box Galaxy A27, A37 and A57 listings; that collection's URL says “brand new”, so check the condition shown on each listing.

If long 4G support is the main draw, the Galaxy A08 is also Open Box (Activated) and an international version, at £159.99 for 64GB: £79.01 less than the A18 (£239.00 − £159.99). Samsung lists updates to 30 September 2032 and IP64, but it has an HD+ LCD, half the storage and no NFC in Samsung's specification; the same 4G Calling check and retailer-warranty point apply.

Closer to the A17's price, the refurbished Galaxy A26 5G 128GB in Very Good condition is £165.99, with 5G, a 120Hz screen and OIS on Samsung's specifications, IP67 as a design rating (not guaranteed on a used phone) and UK updates to 31 March 2031. Spending more than £167.99 is justified when the extra buys something you'll use every day: 5G, a steadier camera or more years of updates. It isn't justified because the A18 has a higher number in its name.

Who should not buy the Galaxy A18, and who should skip the A17

Don't buy the Open Box Galaxy A18 if you need 5G or rely on 4G Calling or Wi-Fi Calling with a specific network and can't check first. Buyers who want documented OIS for video should choose an A17 model, and gift buyers wanting a sealed box should pass too.

Skip the Galaxy A17 (4G) if you need 5G, will still use the phone after September 2031, or work in dusty conditions. Neither phone has a 120Hz screen, a headphone jack or eSIM on Samsung UK's specifications.

What arrives in the box, and the first checks on an A18 or A17

Galaxy A17 (4G), Brand New comes sealed in the manufacturer's retail box with the manufacturer's standard contents. Check the seal, confirm the model code in Settings under About phone matches the listing, and install any waiting updates.

Galaxy A18, Open Box (Activated), International Version has been opened and activated once but is otherwise unused. Confirm the model code (SM-A185F), then make a test call and send a text on 4G so you know 4G Calling works on your network while you can still return it.

Galaxy A17 5G, Refurbished arrives with a free USB-C charging cable, a free SIM ejector pin and protective packaging, but no mains plug. The grade describes cosmetic condition only; every phone is fully working, tested and cleaned in Manchester, as the page on how The Tech Gadgets tests and grades refurbished phones explains.

Support left from 5 October 2026 is 71.8 months (6.0 years) for the A18 on our cautious date, 59.8 months (5.0 years) for the A17 (4G) and 58.8 months (4.9 years) for the A17 5G (to 31 August 2031). Whichever you choose, remember the IP ratings are design specifications, not a guarantee for an opened or used phone, and check battery health when it arrives. The warranty policy lists battery defects and reduced capacity as exclusions, but a faulty battery within 30 days is still covered by your Consumer Rights Act right to reject.

Warranty and returns: an Open Box A18 versus a sealed A17

All three phones are international stock, so the retailer's cover is the one that counts, because Samsung UK may not service non-UK units. The A18 comes with a 12-month warranty from The Tech Gadgets, starting on delivery and covering faults that develop in normal use (not accidental or liquid damage), as does the refurbished A17 5G. For the sealed Galaxy A17 (4G), the product page and returns policy list a 12-month warranty from The Tech Gadgets. The returns and warranty policy has the full terms.

Returns work the same way for all three: change-of-mind returns within 30 days if the phone is unused and complete (you pay return postage), plus your 14-day right to cancel. Orders placed by 3pm Monday to Friday are dispatched the same day from Manchester, and standard delivery takes 1–3 working days, free over £50, as the shipping and dispatch terms set out. Galaxy A18 vs A17: questions buyers ask

Is the £167.99 Galaxy A17 the 5G model?

No. The £167.99 listing is the Galaxy A17 (4G), model SM-A175F, which can't connect to 5G. The Galaxy A17 5G (SM-A176B) is a separate phone with a different chip, the Exynos 1330. At The Tech Gadgets it's sold on the refurbished listing from £154.99 (Fair, 128GB) or £165.99 (Very Good, 128GB). If 5G is why you're shopping, neither the A17 (4G) nor the A18 has it.

When did the Galaxy A17 and Galaxy A18 come out?

Samsung's UK newsroom named the Galaxy A17 (4G) alongside the A17 5G on 27 August 2025, although GSMArena dates the 4G model's announcement to 18 September 2025. Samsung announced the Galaxy A18 on 15 September 2026 through its French newsroom; Samsung UK has a live A18 page, but we couldn't verify a UK on-sale date. The A18 is about a year newer.

Will 4G Calling and Wi-Fi Calling work on the international A18?

Possibly, but don't assume it. With UK 3G switched off, a 4G-only phone makes calls using 4G Calling (VoLTE), and the A18 listing says support for this on international software can vary by network. Wi-Fi Calling also depends on your network, plan and, for international units, software. If you rely on either, ask the team before ordering and test both in the first few days. The A17 models are international stock too, so the same advice applies.

Which is better as a teenager's first smartphone?

For most families, the Galaxy A17 (4G). It's £71.01 cheaper, sealed, has OIS for steadier video, and its updates run to 30 September 2031, about five years from now. The A18 makes sense if you want one phone to last six years. If you'd like 5G for them, the refurbished A17 5G adds it for £165.99 in Very Good condition, as a used phone.

Can I return the A18 if I decide I'd prefer the A17?

Yes, within the policy limits. You have a 14-day right to cancel starting the day after delivery; you can open the box to inspect the phone, but the refund may be reduced if it's been handled more than needed to check it. There's also a 30-day change-of-mind return if the phone is unused and complete. You pay return postage in both cases, and should sign out and factory reset the phone first.

Does the Galaxy A18 have more storage or RAM than the Galaxy A17?

No. Both have 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, and both take a microSD card of up to 2TB in the second SIM slot, so you can't use two SIMs and a card at once. For more built-in storage, the refurbished Galaxy A17 5G comes in 256GB from £181.99 (Fair) or £194.99 (Very Good), checked 5 October 2026. Ask about the Fair option's condition before choosing it.

Verdict: the Galaxy A17 for most people, the A18 if you'll keep it into the 2030s

Buy the brand-new Galaxy A17 (4G) at £167.99 unless you have a specific reason to spend £71.01 more. It's sealed, it has the stabilised camera on Samsung UK's specifications, and its updates run to 30 September 2031, longer than most people keep a phone at this price.

Choose the Open Box Galaxy A18 instead when you'll keep the phone for six years or value IP64. If you need 5G, choose neither: the refurbished Galaxy A17 5G costs about the same as the new A17. Check the Galaxy A18 Open Box (Activated) listing for current colours before ordering.
