Samsung A Series Phones Explained: Every Model, A06 to A57

What do the numbers in Samsung's Galaxy A names mean, and which of the 24 models from the A06 to the A57 suits you? A decoder, a master table with launch years, update dates and prices, and a “start here” list.

Samsung A series phones are Samsung's Galaxy range below the flagship Galaxy S line, and the number in each name tells you most of what you need: the first digit is the tier (among the models in this guide, 0 is the entry point and 5 the highest) and the second digit is the generation, so an A57 is a newer, higher-tier phone than an A16. The Tech Gadgets currently lists 24 Galaxy A models, from the A06 to the A57, from £93.99 (checked 5 October 2026), sold as Brand New (sealed), Open Box (Activated) or Refurbished (graded).

This guide decodes the names for first-time Samsung buyers, upgraders and parents choosing a child's phone. The biggest trap is assuming a bigger number is always better value: some older upper-tier models are only months away from the end of Samsung's security updates.

The Galaxy A range at a glance

  • Best for: everyday apps, photos and messaging without Galaxy S prices; first phones; replacing an ageing handset on a budget.
  • Consider an alternative when: you want a telephoto lens or wireless charging; no model here lists either.
  • Check before buying: how much Samsung security support is left from October 2026, 4G or 5G, the condition on the listing (not the web address), and whether Samsung sells the model in the UK (every Galaxy A we list is international stock).

How do you read a Samsung Galaxy A model name?

Read the two digits after the “A”. The first is the tier: among the models we sell, 0 and 1 are entry and budget phones, 2 and 3 the middle, and 5 the highest. The second is the generation, which moves up by one roughly once a year. Then check for a suffix: in the cheaper tiers “5G” marks a different phone, not just a different modem, and on the A07s the “s” marks a regional variant.

The first digit: the tier

Samsung doesn't publish a tier chart in the sources we checked, but its UK launch prices show the ladder: £169 for the Galaxy A16 4G and £199 for the A16 5G; £299 for the A26 5G; £329 (A33 5G) to £399 (A36 5G) for the A3x models; and £399 (A53 5G) to £529 (A57 5G, 8GB/256GB) for the A5x models. Each step up usually buys a better screen, camera, build or charging speed. Five isn't the ceiling everywhere: Samsung has sold higher numbers in some markets, such as the Galaxy A73 5G, but none is listed here.

The second digit: the generation, checked against launch dates

The mid and upper models line up with spring launches: the A33 and A53 in March 2022, A34 and A54 in March 2023, A35 and A55 in March 2024, A36 and A56 in March 2025, and A37 and A57 in March 2026. Cheaper models often arrive in the second half of the previous year: the A06 in August 2024, the A16 series in October and November 2024, the A07 and A17 in August and September 2025, and the A08 and A18 in September 2026. So the same digit can span a late-2024 and an early-2025 launch, and the second digit, not the first, tells you which phone is newer.

What “5G” in the name really means

From the A26 upwards, every model we sell is 5G and the label is simply part of the name. In the 0 and 1 tiers, 4G and 5G phones share a number but differ inside, so treat each pair as two models (the comparison table further down shows how).

The “s” suffix and regional versions

The Galaxy A07s is a regional 4G variant of the A07, launched outside the UK and EU (the FAQ below explains it). More broadly, the A06, A06 5G, A07, A07 5G, A07s and A08 have no samsung.com/uk product page at all.

Model codes: the label inside the phone

Every Galaxy A has a model code starting “SM-A” under Settings, then About phone; its first two digits match the model number. Across the phones we sell, a third digit of 5 marks a 4G version (A06 is SM-A065F, A16 4G is SM-A165F) and 6 a 5G version (A06 5G is SM-A066B, A16 5G is SM-A166B); the A07s, SM-A077F, is the exception. That's an observed pattern, not an official rule. Regional letters follow and vary by market. Our A-series phones are international stock, so the full code can differ from Samsung UK retail units; check it matches the listing.

Every Samsung A series phone we sell, in one table

Samsung's facts (launch, security-update end) sit beside what The Tech Gadgets lists (condition, lowest price on 5 October 2026); every listing is international stock, whatever the condition. Refurbished prices are for Very Good 128GB, the cheapest grade with a published definition. “Calc.” means Samsung states years but no date, so we counted from launch. An asterisk means Samsung's own pages disagree; both dates are explained below. A dagger marks a launch date from a secondary source.

Where Samsung's dates and promises disagree (asterisked), we show the earlier date. Samsung Singapore gives the A06 5G 31 March 2030. Samsung UK gives the A16 4G 31 August 2031 (the A16 5G, launched alongside it, ends 31 October 2030), the A18 31 October 2032 although it was announced in September 2026, and the A56 5G 31 March 2032; all three are later than the six-year promises imply. For the A35 and A55, Samsung UK says 31 March 2028, though the five-year promise implies about March 2029. Dates for models Samsung UK doesn't sell come from its Singapore, Malaysia and Levant sites. † UK tech press date; Samsung UK published none. Some listings also show a Brand New option (A17 5G £198.99, A26 5G £221.99, A56 5G £306.99, A27 5G 128GB £256.99, A57 5G 128GB £306.99); we note them, not recommend them.

What each Galaxy A family is for

For a ranked shortlist instead, see our ranked guide to the best Galaxy A phone for 2026.

A0x: the entry models (A06 to A08)

All six have a 6.7-inch HD+ LCD, a 50MP main camera with a 2MP helper lens, an 8MP selfie camera and a 3.5mm headphone jack. None lists NFC on Samsung's spec pages, so don't plan on tap-to-pay. None is a Samsung UK-range model.

  • Galaxy A06 (4G): the lowest-priced sealed phone here, for a back-up handset where updates to around 2028 are enough.
  • Galaxy A06 5G: adds 5G, 90Hz, IP54 and four Android upgrades for £5 more.
  • Galaxy A07 (4G): updates to August 2031, for buyers who keep phones for years.
  • Galaxy A07 5G: the strongest entry model on paper: 120Hz, 6,000mAh, updates to January 2032.
  • Galaxy A07s (4G): for buyers comfortable with Open Box international stock.
  • Galaxy A08 (4G): the newest entry model, with 6,000mAh and IP64; the Galaxy A08 Open Box listing explains its international-version notes.

A1x: the budget models (A15 5G to A18)

The step from 0 to 1 is mainly screen and camera: FHD+ Super AMOLED at 90Hz, a 5MP ultra-wide and 2MP macro beside the 50MP main camera, and a 13MP selfie camera. Samsung's UK spec lists NFC on all but the A17 5G, and only the A15 5G keeps a headphone jack. Samsung has sold all six in the UK.

  • Galaxy A15 5G: sealed new 5G with a headphone jack; updates end January 2029.
  • Galaxy A16 4G: the lowest-cost route to AMOLED and NFC with support into 2030; a sensible first phone.
  • Galaxy A16 5G: the same with 5G, to October 2030.
  • Galaxy A17 (4G): sealed new, with optical image stabilisation (OIS), to September 2031.
  • Galaxy A17 5G: the A17 with 5G, mainly sold refurbished here.
  • Galaxy A18 (4G): the newest budget model, IP64, supported to about September 2032; Open Box international only. Samsung shows no A18 5G.

A2x: the lower mid-range (A26 and A27)

The 2 tier brings 120Hz screens, OIS and Gorilla Glass Victus+ front and back.

  • Galaxy A26 5G: a refurbished all-rounder with IP67 and updates to March 2031.
  • Galaxy A27 5G: the 2026 model with a Snapdragon 6 Gen 3, sold Open Box as international stock, supported to July 2032.

A3x: the mid-range (A33 to A37)

All five carry IP67 or IP68 and OIS. The A35, A36 and A37 add eSIM; the A36 and A37 charge at up to 45W but drop the microSD slot.

  • Galaxy A33 5G: a short-term or back-up phone only, since Samsung's updates end on 31 March 2027; weigh the refurbished Galaxy A33 5G grades with that in mind.
  • Galaxy A34 5G: a 120Hz, 1,000-nit AMOLED screen cheaply, to March 2028.
  • Galaxy A35 5G: adds eSIM; plan around Samsung UK's March 2028 date.
  • Galaxy A36 5G: 45W charging, to March 2031.
  • Galaxy A37 5G: IP68, to March 2032, sold Open Box as international stock.

A5x: the upper mid-range (A53 to A57)

The highest tier we sell steps up build and cameras: a 12MP ultra-wide on every model, metal frames on the A55 and A56 (per Samsung) and IP68 on the A57. The A53, A54 and A55 have 32MP selfie cameras; the A56 and A57 move to 12MP but add 45W charging.

  • Galaxy A53 5G: the cheapest 5G phone here, but only if you'll replace it by spring 2027, when its updates end.
  • Galaxy A54 5G: a compact 6.4-inch upper mid-ranger, to March 2028.
  • Galaxy A55 5G: metal frame and eSIM; plan around March 2028.
  • Galaxy A56 5G: 45W charging, support into 2031.
  • Galaxy A57 5G: the slimmest and lightest model (6.9mm, 179g), sold Open Box as international stock.

Is a newer Galaxy A better value than a higher-tier one?

Usually, for a phone you'll keep for years. The second digit is the better guide to how long Samsung keeps sending security updates, and that can outweigh the first digit's better camera. A refurbished A53 5G and A16 4G are £7 apart, yet the A16 should be supported about 43 months longer. Higher tiers still win on screen, camera and build.

Two dilemmas, worked through, counting months of security support from 5 October 2026 to the end date (days ÷ 30.44).

  • Galaxy A16 4G or A53 5G, both Refurbished Very Good 128GB: £100.99 − £93.99 = £7.00. The A16 4G has 48.9 months left (to about October 2030) and the A53 5G 5.8 months (to about March 2027), a gap of 43.1 months. The A53 keeps 5G, IP67, 120Hz and a stronger camera.
  • Galaxy A55 5G or A26 5G, both Refurbished Very Good 128GB: £179.99 − £165.99 = £14.00 more for the A55. On Samsung UK's dates the cheaper A26 has 53.8 months left against the A55's 17.8, so 36.0 months longer; the A55 keeps its metal frame and 32MP selfie camera.

Replacing within about 18 months? The older upper-tier model can make sense. Need it to last? Buy the newer generation, and use the master table's end dates to check other pairings.

Which 4G and 5G versions are different phones?

In the budget tiers, every pair we sell differs in more than the modem. The 5G versions use a different processor, and some also get a faster screen or a bigger battery. The A06 and A07 pairs are £5 apart new; the refurbished A16 pair is further apart. Each row compares the same condition and storage.

Pair Processor (4G vs 5G) Refresh rate Battery Price gap (5 Oct 2026)
Galaxy A06 vs A06 5G, Brand New 64GB Helio G85 vs Dimensity 6300 60Hz vs 90Hz 5,000mAh both £120.99 − £115.99 = £5.00
Galaxy A07 vs A07 5G, Brand New 64GB Helio G99 vs Dimensity 6300 90Hz vs 120Hz 5,000 vs 6,000mAh £133.99 − £128.99 = £5.00
Galaxy A16 4G vs A16 5G, Refurbished Very Good 128GB Helio G99 vs Exynos 1330 90Hz both 5,000mAh both £128.99 − £100.99 = £28.00

The A07 5G's chip name comes from GSMArena; Samsung confirms the A16 5G's Exynos 1330 only for the Brazilian model. The A17 pair isn't sold here in a like-for-like condition, and the A08 and A18 are 4G only.

If you want this, start with that

  • The lowest price for a sealed new phone: the Galaxy A06 listing at £115.99, with updates to about August 2028.
  • A new phone supported longest for the money: the A07 5G (£133.99, January 2032) or A07 (£128.99, August 2031). For a model Samsung sells in the UK, the A17 (4G) at £167.99 runs to September 2031.
  • AMOLED and NFC with years of support: a refurbished A16 4G, Very Good from £100.99.
  • 5G for as little as possible: a refurbished A53 5G at £93.99 if you'll replace it by spring 2027, the A06 5G at £120.99 new, or a Very Good A16 5G at £128.99 for longer support.
  • A headphone jack: the A0x models or the A15 5G; every other model uses USB-C audio.
  • eSIM: the A35, A36, A37, A54, A55, A56 or A57.
  • 45W charging: the A36, A37, A56 or A57; budget for a compatible charger.
  • A memory card slot: anything except the A36, A37, A56 and A57.
  • The most water protection on paper: the A37 or A57 at IP68, then the IP67-rated A26, A33 to A36 and A53 to A56 (see the condition caveat below).

Three condition types: what you are actually buying

Condition comes from the product listing, never the web address. The A07s address contains “brand-new” but the phone is sold Open Box (Activated), and the collection named “brand new” holds the Open Box Galaxy A27, A37 and A57 listings. Whatever the condition, every Galaxy A we sell is international stock. Model codes, and box printing where there's a retail box, may differ from UK units; Samsung UK may not carry out manufacturer warranty repairs on non-UK units, so The Tech Gadgets' 12-month warranty is your cover; and if you rely on Wi-Fi Calling or 4G Calling (VoLTE) on a particular network, ask the team before ordering.

Brand New (sealed)

The A06, A06 5G, A07, A07 5G, A15 5G and A17 come sealed in the manufacturer's retail box. The first four are brand new and sealed, sold unlocked for UK networks by The Tech Gadgets, but Samsung doesn't list those models on its UK website. The product pages and returns policy list a 12-month warranty from The Tech Gadgets; don't assume Samsung UK's manufacturer warranty applies.

Open Box (Activated): international version or stock

The box has been opened and the phone activated once; otherwise it's unused, but it isn't sold as sealed new. The A07s, A08 and A18 are listed as international versions rather than Samsung UK stock; the A27, A37 and A57 are international stock from the UAE or Europe, set up once, factory reset and checked. Samsung UK may not provide warranty service on international units, so The Tech Gadgets' 12-month warranty is your cover. Model codes may differ, the box may lack a UK plug, and VoLTE on international software can vary by network. Our guide to how brand-new international stock differs from refurbished covers the trade-offs.

Refurbished (graded)

Twelve models are sold refurbished: A16 4G, A16 5G, A17 5G, A26, A33, A34, A35, A36, A53, A54, A55 and A56. Each is fully working, tested and cleaned in Manchester; the grade describes cosmetics only. Like New has no visible marks; Excellent has light signs of use, hard to spot at arm's length; Very Good has visible body marks with the screen in good shape. Those three grades have at least 85% battery health at dispatch. You get the phone, a charging cable, a SIM ejector pin and protective packaging, but no plug or retail box. The grading and testing standards give the detail.

Six listings (A16 4G, A16 5G, A17 5G, A26 5G, A36 5G and A56 5G) also offer Fair. A Fair option is listed; the grading page doesn't define it, so ask the team about its condition before ordering. For more depth, see the refurbished Galaxy A16 to A56 buying guide.

Checks when any Galaxy A arrives

Confirm the model code matches the listing, check battery health on a refurbished phone and make a test call on your own network. IP ratings describe the phones as designed when new; a used, refurbished or Open Box phone can't be guaranteed to keep factory water resistance, because seals age and repairs can disturb them. Liquid damage isn't covered by the warranty either.

Buying any Galaxy A from The Tech Gadgets

Whatever the condition, the returns policy lists a 12-month warranty from The Tech Gadgets, starting on delivery, for faults that develop in normal use (not accidental or liquid damage). Batteries are the exception to watch: the warranty policy excludes battery defects and reduced capacity, so check battery health in the first days. If the battery is faulty within 30 days, your Consumer Rights Act right to reject still applies. Change-of-mind returns run for 30 days if the phone is unused and complete (you pay return postage), alongside your 14-day right to cancel. The returns and warranty terms set out the detail.

Orders placed by 3pm Monday to Friday are dispatched the same day from Manchester; standard delivery then takes 1–3 working days and is free on orders of £50 or more.

Samsung Galaxy A16 5G, Refurbished

From £128.99 for 128GB in Very Good condition (price checked 5 October 2026). Grades: Like New, Excellent, Very Good; a Fair option is also listed.

  • At least 85% battery health at dispatch on Like New, Excellent and Very Good
  • 12-month warranty from The Tech Gadgets (excludes accidental and liquid damage)
  • Same-day dispatch from Manchester on weekday orders placed by 3pm

Galaxy A-series questions buyers ask

Which is the newest Samsung A series phone?

As of 5 October 2026, the newest models we list are the Galaxy A08, A18 and A07s, all launched in September 2026 and all 4G phones sold here as Open Box (Activated) international versions. The newest 5G models are the Galaxy A27 5G (June 2026) and the A37 5G and A57 5G (March 2026).

Is a Galaxy A57 better than a Galaxy A17?

On hardware, yes. Both are the same generation, but the A57 sits in the highest tier we sell, with a 120Hz Super AMOLED Plus screen, 12MP ultra-wide, IP68, eSIM and 45W charging. Support ends at similar times (March 2032 against September 2031). The A57 5G Open Box from £278.99 minus the A17 (4G) Brand New from £167.99 is £111.00, the price of the higher tier.

What does the “s” mean in Galaxy A07s?

On the A07s it marks a regional variant, not a higher tier. Samsung's Levant page lists a MediaTek Helio G99+ with LPDDR5 memory, while the 6.7-inch 90Hz screen, 5,000mAh battery and cameras match the A07's specifications. It launched in September 2026 outside the UK and EU. The Tech Gadgets sells it as Open Box (Activated), international version.

Why are some Galaxy A models not on Samsung's UK website?

Samsung sells different models in different regions. Its UK Galaxy A page on 5 October 2026 shows the A17 5G, A18, A27 5G, A37 5G and A57 5G; older models such as the A16 and A26 were sold here previously. The A06, A06 5G, A07, A07 5G, A07s and A08 launched for markets in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Latin America and some non-EU European countries. VoLTE and Wi-Fi Calling on them can depend on network and software, so check with the team if those matter.

Which is the smallest Galaxy A phone?

None is truly small; most have 6.6- or 6.7-inch screens. The most compact are the Galaxy A54 5G, with a 6.4-inch screen and the shortest body at 158.2mm, and the Galaxy A33 5G, also 6.4 inches and the narrowest at 74.0mm. The A57 5G is the lightest (179g) and thinnest (6.9mm), though its screen is 6.7 inches. Check the A54 and A33 support dates before choosing one for size.

How do I check which Galaxy A model I already have?

Open Settings, then About phone, to see the model name and the “SM-A” code; its first two digits give the tier and generation. That helps when trading up: an A33 or A53 from 2022 stops getting security updates around March 2027, so a newer generation in a lower tier can still be a real step forward in support.

Verdict: where most Galaxy A buyers should start

Read the name in two halves: the second digit tells you how current the phone is and is the better guide to how long Samsung will keep it secure; the first tells you how good the screen, camera and build are likely to be. For most first-time buyers and parents, start with a newer-generation budget phone: a refurbished Galaxy A16 5G from £128.99 (support to October 2030), or the sealed Galaxy A17 (4G) from £167.99, a model Samsung sells in the UK, supported to September 2031. For a better camera, screen and water resistance, begin with a refurbished Galaxy A36 5G (Very Good from £211.99, updates to March 2031).

Choose something else if you need a low-cost stop-gap (a refurbished A54 5G, supported to 31 March 2028; the A53 5G only if you'll replace it by spring 2027) or the lowest price on a sealed phone (the A06 (4G), if updates to around August 2028 are acceptable). To see every option side by side, open the Samsung Galaxy phones in stock.
