A refurbished Samsung Galaxy A53 5G is worth buying in October 2026 if you want a sharp screen and a stabilised camera for the least money, and you plan to keep it for a year or so rather than four. At The Tech Gadgets it starts at £93.99 for 128GB in Very Good condition (checked 5 October 2026). That buys a 120Hz Super AMOLED display, a 64MP main camera with optical image stabilisation (OIS) and an IP67 design rating, which no new Samsung we sell matches at that price.
The catch is software. Samsung promised up to five years of security updates from a spring 2022 launch, so the patch window is almost closed. That makes the A53 5G a strong stop-gap, spare or replacement for a broken Galaxy A52 or A52s, and the wrong phone for banking on into 2028 or for eSIM users.
Storage, colour and condition are chosen on the product page. Prices were checked on 5 October 2026 and can change.
Galaxy A53 5G at a glance: who it suits and what to check
- Best for: a phone for up to 12–18 months at around £94 (only about six of them likely to be patched); replacing a broken Galaxy A52 or A52s; a spare for travel or navigation; buyers who rank screen and camera above battery size.
- Consider an alternative when: the phone will hold banking apps beyond spring 2027; you need eSIM; or you'd pay £112 for the 256GB version, because a 128GB Galaxy A54 5G costs only £13.00 more.
- Check before buying: that the short update window suits you, that you own a USB-C plug (none is included), and that you can live without a headphone socket.
Galaxy A53 5G buying facts: Samsung's specification vs today's listing

The second table is what The Tech Gadgets lists for the refurbished Galaxy A53 5G, with the storage premium worked out at each grade.
| Galaxy A53 5G, Refurbished | 128GB | 256GB | 256GB premium |
|---|---|---|---|
| Very Good | from £93.99 | from £111.99 | £111.99 − £93.99 = £18.00 |
| Excellent | from £98.99 | from £118.99 | £118.99 − £98.99 = £20.00 |
| Like New | from £104.99 | from £125.99 | £125.99 − £104.99 = £21.00 |
Prices checked 5 October 2026. Colours are Awesome Black, Blue, Peach and White, and every grade has at least 85% battery health at dispatch. Samsung UK launched the A53 5G only as 6GB + 128GB, while the refurbished Galaxy A53 5G listing describes 6GB or 8GB of RAM and adds 256GB. If the exact RAM or model code matters, ask the team before ordering a 256GB unit.
What does a £94 Galaxy A53 5G do better than a new Galaxy A07 5G?
Quite a lot, in the parts you look at and photograph with. The refurbished Galaxy A53 5G has a sharper Super AMOLED screen, a stabilised 64MP camera plus an ultra-wide lens, NFC for contactless payments and an IP67 design rating. The brand-new Galaxy A07 5G answers with a bigger 6,000mAh battery, a headphone socket and a much longer update promise.
The brand-new Galaxy A07 5G costs from £133.99 for 64GB (checked 5 October 2026), so the refurbished A53 5G at £93.99 is £40.00 cheaper (£133.99 − £93.99) while being the older, higher-tier design.
Screen
The Galaxy A53 5G uses a 6.5-inch Super AMOLED panel at 1080 x 2400; the Galaxy A07 5G has a 6.7-inch PLS LCD at 720 x 1600. Both refresh at up to 120Hz, but the A53 has roughly 2.25 times as many pixels, which shows in small text, maps and photos, and AMOLED blacks make dark mode look cleaner. Samsung publishes an 800-nit peak for the A07 5G and no brightness figure for the A53, so we won't claim the A53 is brighter outdoors.
Camera
Samsung lists OIS on the A53 5G's 64MP main camera but not on the A07 5G's 50MP camera, which is paired only with a 2MP depth sensor. OIS helps most where budget phones struggle: indoor shots, evening light and video while walking. The A53 also adds a 12MP ultra-wide, which the A07 5G lacks, and a 32MP selfie camera against 8MP.
Payments and water resistance
Samsung's A53 5G spec includes NFC, which contactless phone payments rely on; the A07 5G's spec doesn't list it. The A53 was also designed to IP67, against IP54 for the A07 5G. Treat that as a design specification only: a refurbished phone's seals may have aged or been disturbed, so no second-hand phone should be considered waterproof.
Where the Galaxy A07 5G wins
The A07 5G has a 6,000mAh battery against 5,000mAh, and the cell is new rather than at 85% health or better. It keeps a 3.5mm headphone socket, and Samsung's Malaysian and Indian spec pages give security updates until 31 January 2032. It's brand new and sealed international stock (box printing and model code may differ from UK units), sold unlocked for UK networks by The Tech Gadgets, but Samsung doesn't list the A07 5G on its UK website, so ask the team first if you rely on Wi-Fi Calling or VoLTE. The product page and returns policy list a 12-month warranty from The Tech Gadgets.
How long will a Galaxy A53 5G keep getting security updates?
Not long. Samsung promised up to five years of security updates when the Galaxy A53 5G launched in spring 2022. Samsung UK has no published end date for it, but the Galaxy A33 5G, announced the same day, is listed until 31 March 2027. Plan on spring 2027 at the latest, which is about 5.8 months of patches from 5 October 2026.
Here's the evidence. Samsung's 2022 UK launch release promised “up to four generations of One UI and Android OS upgrades and up to five years of security updates” without saying when the count starts, and the archived Samsung UK spec page has no “valid until” field. The Galaxy A33 5G, announced alongside it, has a Samsung UK date of 31 March 2027, and The Tech Gadgets' A53 listing also says March 2027. Nothing we found points beyond spring 2027. The four promised Android upgrades from Android 12 are also behind it, so don't expect another major version.
Why we'd treat it as a 12 to 18-month phone, with only about six months patched
A phone doesn't stop working when patches end. What changes is risk: newly found security flaws stay open, and in time some banking and payment apps drop support for older software. So judge the A53 5G by its job. As a main phone with banking and work email, its sensible life ends around spring 2027. As a stop-gap, spare or travel phone with nothing sensitive on it, 12 to 18 months is reasonable, accepting that from spring 2027 onwards it will probably be unpatched.
Spread over the update window, the price looks different too. Divide the Very Good 128GB price of £93.99 by 5.8 months (5 October 2026 to 31 March 2027, our planning date) and you're paying about £16.21 per month of security cover. Hold that number against the alternatives below.
128GB or 256GB: is the extra £18 worth it on an A53 5G?
Usually not. At Very Good, the 256GB Galaxy A53 5G costs £18.00 more than 128GB (£111.99 − £93.99), and the phone already takes a microSD card of up to 1TB. Pay for 256GB only if you run two SIM cards, because the card shares the second SIM slot. Otherwise, put the money towards a better-supported phone.
The A53 5G's tray is “SIM 1 + hybrid”: the second position takes another nano-SIM or a microSD card, not both. With no eSIM in Samsung's UK specification, someone running a work and a personal number can't add a card, and that's the one buyer for whom built-in 256GB makes sense. For everyone else, 128GB plus a card is cheaper, and the gap widens as the grade rises: £20.00 at Excellent and £21.00 at Like New.
The stronger argument against the 256GB A53 is what else the money buys. A Very Good 256GB A53 5G at £111.99 is £13.00 less than a Very Good 128GB Galaxy A54 5G at £124.99 (£124.99 − £111.99). That £13.00 gets you a Samsung UK security date of 31 March 2028, eSIM and a newer-generation chip (the Exynos 1380, per independent listings), and the A54 also takes a microSD card. If you're already spending £112, spend £13 more and buy the A54 5G.
Which Galaxy A53 5G condition grade makes sense on a short-life phone?
Very Good, for most people. The grades describe cosmetic wear only, every grade has the same minimum of 85% battery health at dispatch, and a phone you'll keep for about a year will probably live in a case. At 128GB, Excellent adds £5.00 and Like New adds £11.00, which buys appearance rather than anything you'll use.
The Tech Gadgets' grading page defines Very Good as visible marks on the body with the screen in good shape, Excellent as light signs of use that are hard to spot at arm's length, and Like New as no visible marks on the screen or body. Every refurbished phone is tested and cleaned in Manchester; see how The Tech Gadgets tests and grades refurbished phones.
At 128GB, Excellent is £98.99 − £93.99 = £5.00 more than Very Good, and Like New is £104.99 − £93.99 = £11.00 more. The one case for Like New is a gift. On a phone you'll replace around 2027 or 2028, cosmetic perfection has little practical value.
Replacing a Galaxy A52 or A52s: is the A53 5G the right like-for-like swap?
It's the closest replacement The Tech Gadgets sells, since the Galaxy A52 and A52s aren't stocked. You'll get Samsung's One UI software, so setup and menus feel familiar, and Samsung's Smart Switch app can move your data across. Check two things first: the A53 5G has no headphone socket, and its security support ends far sooner than a newer phone's.
If you were happy with your A52-series phone and only need the next 12 months covered, a Very Good 128GB A53 5G is the low-cost, low-fuss answer; buy a case made for the A53 rather than reusing old accessories. If you want a phone that will last as long as your A52s did, the A53 isn't it. Look at the Galaxy A16 5G, A54 5G or A35 5G below.
Is a refurbished Galaxy A53 5G a sensible phone for a teenager?
Only as a one-year phone. It has a higher water-resistance design rating than the cheapest new Samsungs, a stabilised camera, and NFC for contactless payments. But if you expect a teenager to keep it for two or three years, that outlasts the A53 5G's security support, which you should plan to end by spring 2027. For a longer stretch, a refurbished Galaxy A16 5G is the better-supported choice.
The refurbished Galaxy A16 5G has a Samsung UK security date of 31 October 2030. It costs £35.00 more at Very Good 128GB (£128.99 − £93.99) and keeps a Super AMOLED screen and NFC, but drops to 90Hz, has a lower IP54 design rating and lists no OIS on its main camera. Our rule: if you'll upgrade them within a year, the A53 5G is the better phone for the money; if it has to last to 2029, start with the A16 5G.
Who should not buy a refurbished Galaxy A53 5G?
- Anyone wanting a main phone for banking and work beyond spring 2027.
- eSIM users: Samsung's UK specification for the A53 5G lists nano-SIM only.
- Heavy users who put stamina first: a new 6,000mAh phone suits them better.
- Wired-headphone users who don't want an adapter.
Galaxy A53 5G vs A54 5G, A16 5G, A07 5G and A35 5G: the price maths
The cheapest sensible version of each alternative. Support months run from 5 October 2026 to each end date (days ÷ 30.44), using the earlier date where Samsung's dates conflict; price per month is the from-price ÷ months. Prices checked 5 October 2026.
| Model, condition, storage | From | Screen | Main camera OIS (Samsung spec) | Design IP rating | Security updates until (Samsung) | Support months from 5 Oct 2026 | Price per support month |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Galaxy A53 5G, Refurbished Very Good, 128GB | £93.99 | 6.5in Super AMOLED, 120Hz | Yes | IP67 | No published date; planned as 31 March 2027 at the latest | 5.8 | £16.21 |
| Galaxy A54 5G, Refurbished Very Good, 128GB | £124.99 | 6.4in Super AMOLED, 120Hz | Yes | IP67 | 31 March 2028 (Samsung UK) | 17.8 | £7.02 |
| Galaxy A16 5G, Refurbished Very Good, 128GB | £128.99 | 6.7in Super AMOLED, 90Hz | Not listed | IP54 | 31 October 2030 (Samsung UK) | 48.9 | £2.64 |
| Galaxy A07 5G, Brand New (sealed), 64GB | £133.99 | 6.7in PLS LCD HD+, 120Hz | Not listed | IP54 | 31 January 2032 (Samsung Malaysia and India) | 63.9 | £2.10 |
| Galaxy A35 5G, Refurbished Very Good, 128GB | £136.99 | 6.6in Super AMOLED, 120Hz | Yes | IP67 | 31 March 2028 on Samsung UK; the five-year promise implies about March 2029 | 17.8 (earlier date) | £7.70 |
Two things jump out. First, the A53 is the cheapest phone on the page and the most expensive per month of security cover, by a distance. Second, the step from A53 5G to A54 5G is small: £31.00 at Very Good 128GB (£124.99 − £93.99) for 12 more months of patches on Samsung's dates, eSIM and a newer chip, on a slightly smaller 6.4-inch screen. Its cameras match the A53's on paper for OIS, ultra-wide resolution and selfie resolution.
Decision rules
- Choose the Galaxy A53 5G (Very Good, 128GB, £93.99) when your budget stops below £100, the phone is a stop-gap or spare, and screen and camera matter more than battery size or longevity.
- Choose the refurbished Galaxy A54 5G instead when you can stretch by £31.00 for support to 31 March 2028 and eSIM. That extra spend is justified if it will be your main phone through 2027.
- Choose the Galaxy A16 5G instead when length of support beats camera and smoothness, such as a teenager's phone that must stay patched until 2030.
- Choose the Galaxy A07 5G instead when you want sealed new, the biggest battery and a headphone socket, and can live with an HD+ LCD, 64GB and no NFC listed.
- Choose the refurbished Galaxy A35 5G instead when you want eSIM, a bigger screen and Samsung's Knox Vault security chip. On Samsung UK's date its support ends with the A54's, so the £12.00 extra buys features, not time.
Spending more isn't justified if you only need a phone for six to 12 months, say while covering a repair. Then the A53's low price is the point.
Condition, storage and colour are chosen on each product page. Prices were checked on 5 October 2026 and can change.
What arrives with a refurbished Galaxy A53 5G, and what to check in week one
A refurbished Galaxy A53 5G from The Tech Gadgets comes with the phone, a USB-C charging cable, a SIM ejector pin and protective packaging, not Samsung's retail box, and there's no mains plug. Samsung sold the A53 without a charger anyway. Any USB-C plug will charge it, though reaching the 25W maximum needs one that supports Samsung's Super Fast Charging.
Check these first:
- Battery health. The listing promises at least 85% at dispatch. Battery health is the share of the original design capacity the battery can still hold, so as an estimate only, 85% of Samsung's 5,000mAh rating is roughly 4,250mAh. That isn't a measured or guaranteed figure, and real-world battery life also depends on how you use the phone and its software. The warranty policy lists battery defects and reduced capacity as exclusions, so check battery health when the phone arrives. A faulty battery within 30 days is still covered by your Consumer Rights Act right to reject.
- Software. Install any pending update straight away. With the patch window closing, being on the latest release matters more on an A53 than on a newer phone.
- Screen, cameras and network. Look for marks beyond your grade, test every camera, then make a call and use mobile data on your own SIM. Our step-by-step guide to checking a used Samsung covers account, model-number and diagnostics checks.
The IP67 rating describes how the A53 5G was built, not how a phone first sold in 2022, now about four and a half years old, will cope with a puddle. Seals age and can be disturbed during refurbishment, and liquid damage is excluded from the warranty.
Buying a refurbished Galaxy A53 5G from The Tech Gadgets
A Very Good A53 5G at £93.99 comes with a 12-month warranty from The Tech Gadgets, starting on delivery and covering faults that develop in normal use (not accidental or liquid damage); see the refund and returns policy. On a 12 to 18-month phone that covers most of your ownership, battery exclusion aside.
If it doesn't suit you, there are change-of-mind returns within 30 days if the phone is unused and complete (you pay return postage), plus your 14-day right to cancel. We explain what UK consumer law adds to a refurbished phone warranty separately.
Orders placed by 3pm Monday to Friday are dispatched the same day from Manchester; standard delivery takes 1–3 working days and is free over £50, which covers every A53 variant. The phone is unlocked for EE, O2, Vodafone, Three and other UK networks, though 5G, VoLTE and Wi-Fi Calling depend on your network and plan. Like every Galaxy A-series phone we sell, the refurbished A53 5G is international stock rather than a UK unit: its model code may differ from a UK phone's, and Samsung UK may not carry out manufacturer warranty repairs on non-UK units, so The Tech Gadgets' 12-month warranty is your cover. If you rely on Wi-Fi Calling or 4G Calling (VoLTE) on a particular network, ask the team before ordering.
Samsung Galaxy A53 5G, Refurbished
- At least 85% battery health at dispatch on every listed grade
- 12-month warranty from The Tech Gadgets (excludes accidental and liquid damage)
- Same-day dispatch from Manchester on weekday orders placed by 3pm
Galaxy A53 5G buyer questions
Is the Samsung A53 a 4G or a 5G phone?
The Galaxy A53 that Samsung launched in the UK is the 5G model, SM-A536B, and the 5G model is the one The Tech Gadgets sells. Our units are international stock, so check in Settings, then About phone, that the model code matches the listing. If you've searched for an A53 4G, you don't have to use 5G: the A53 5G works normally on 4G and switches to 5G where your network and plan provide it.
When did the Galaxy A53 5G come out?
Samsung announced it on 17 March 2022, with wide UK availability from 1 April 2022 at a launch price of £399 for 6GB + 128GB. That date is why the update window is now short: a five-year security promise counted from spring 2022 points to around spring 2027. A refurbished A53 at £93.99 costs less than a quarter of its launch price, which is the trade-off for its age.
Does the Galaxy A53 5G support eSIM?
No. Samsung's UK specification lists nano-SIM only. If your network has moved you to an eSIM-only plan, you'd need to ask for a physical SIM. If eSIM matters, the Galaxy A54 5G and Galaxy A35 5G both support it, from £124.99 and £136.99 respectively at Very Good 128GB (checked 5 October 2026).
Can I add a memory card to the A53 5G?
Yes. Samsung lists microSD support up to 1TB in the hybrid slot, which is why most people should buy 128GB and add a card rather than pay £18.00 or more for 256GB. The card uses the second SIM position, so you can't run two SIMs and a card together. Photos, videos and music move to a card easily; apps generally stay on internal storage, so leave some of the 128GB free for them.
Is the Galaxy A53 5G still getting updates?
For now, but not for long. Samsung UK has no published end date for the A53 5G; its launch promise was up to five years of security updates, and the Galaxy A33 5G from the same launch is listed until 31 March 2027. Plan on spring 2027 at the latest, about 5.8 months from 5 October 2026, and no further major Android versions.
Is a refurbished A53 5G waterproof?
Samsung rated it IP67 when new: designed for fresh water up to 1 metre for 30 minutes, and even then Samsung advised against beaches, pools and soapy water. Don't treat a refurbished phone as waterproof. Seals age and may be disturbed during repair, and The Tech Gadgets' warranty excludes liquid damage.
What's the cheapest Samsung A53 at The Tech Gadgets?
The 128GB Galaxy A53 5G in Very Good condition, from £93.99 (checked 5 October 2026). It has the same 85% battery-health minimum and 12-month warranty as the dearer grades. Very Good means marks on the body with the screen in good shape, which hardly matters in a case, so it's the value grade unless the phone is a gift.
Verdict: worth it as a short-term phone, not a long-term one
The refurbished Galaxy A53 5G is worth buying at under £130, but only in its cheapest form and only for the right job. Buy the 128GB Very Good at £93.99 if you need a stop-gap, a spare, or a familiar replacement for a broken Galaxy A52 or A52s, and you're comfortable that Samsung's security patches will probably end by spring 2027. For that buyer, nothing else we sell gives this screen and camera for under £100.
Everyone else should choose differently: a Very Good 128GB Galaxy A54 5G at £124.99 if you'd spend £112 or more on an A53; a refurbished Galaxy A16 5G if the phone must stay patched until 2030; the Galaxy A07 5G if you want sealed new, after checking its network features.
What would change our view? A later Samsung UK end date for the A53 5G would make the 128GB Very Good a strong main phone rather than a stop-gap. An A54 5G price well above £125 would make the 256GB A53 look better, and an A53 128GB price above about £110 would send almost everyone to the A54. You can compare all current Samsung Galaxy phones in stock before deciding.
