The best dumb phone for most people in the UK, from the three we sell, is the Nokia 105 4G (2024), our 4G keypad phone, from £39.99 (checked 5 October 2026). It does calls, texts, a torch, an FM radio and Snake, runs for days on a removable battery, and it's the only one of our Nokias that can keep working after the 2G networks close from 2029, provided 4G Calling works on your network.
It suits a digital detox, a second phone for evenings and weekends, a festival or work-site phone, or a first phone for a child. The biggest limitation is the one people ask about most: none of our Nokias runs WhatsApp, maps or banking apps. That's the point of a dumb phone, but plan for it before you switch.

Quick decision: which dumb phone should you buy?
- Best for: anyone who wants a basic mobile phone for calls and texts that can outlast the 2G closures. That's the Nokia 105 4G (2024) at £39.99.
- Cheapest: the Nokia 105 (2024) at £29.99, or the Nokia 106 (2023) at £31.99 if you want an FM radio that plays without headphones. Both are 2G-only, so they suit EE, O2 or Vodafone and a shorter life.
- Choose something else when: you can't live without WhatsApp, maps or a banking app, or you need a camera. None of our Nokias does those.
- Check before buying: your network (Three, SMARTY and iD Mobile have no 2G), your SIM size, how your bank sends security codes, and whether 4G Calling will work. Ask our team and your network before ordering the 105 4G.

What is a dumb phone, and why are people switching?
A dumb phone is a basic mobile phone, sometimes called a feature phone, keypad phone or non-smart phone, that makes calls and sends texts but doesn't run app-store apps. People choose one to cut screen time, to stop work email following them home, as a cheap back-up, or as a first phone for a child. Battery life of days is a welcome bonus.
The screen-time worry is widespread. In Ofcom's Adults' Media Use and Attitudes report, published in April 2026, 67% of adults said they sometimes spend too long on screens and 40% said this happens most days. Buying behaviour is shifting too, at least in one corner of the market: Clearpay reported a 24% rise in the volume of “dumbphone” sales in the 12 months to 12 June 2026 compared with the previous year, as reported by PA Media in September 2026. That's one payment provider's data, not the whole UK market.
If “Nokia brick phone” is what you searched for, the 105 and 106 are today's Nokia-branded keypad phones, made by HMD Global under licence from Nokia. They keep the familiar formula of physical keys, a small colour screen, a removable battery and Snake, rather than recreating any one classic model.
Is there a dumb phone with WhatsApp?
Not among ours. None of the Nokia 105 (2024), 105 4G (2024) or 106 (2023) runs WhatsApp. If WhatsApp is non-negotiable, your realistic options are a smartphone you deliberately limit, or the two-phone approach: a Nokia for everyday calls and texts, with WhatsApp checked on a smartphone at home at set times.
Each route has a trade-off. A locked-down smartphone keeps every app one tap away, which is exactly what many people are trying to escape. The two-phone approach keeps WhatsApp but delays your replies, so tell your groups how to reach you urgently: a call or a text to the Nokia. If you see a keypad phone advertised elsewhere with WhatsApp, check with that seller that it's supported today on UK networks before you buy. Ordinary texts, of course, work with everyone, whatever phone they use.
How does the two-phone approach work?
You keep your smartphone, but it stays at home or in a bag, connected to Wi-Fi for WhatsApp, banking and maps when you need them. The Nokia carries your number, or a second number, and goes everywhere. You get reachability without the scrolling, and you don't have to give up any app permanently.
There are two ways to set it up. The simplest is to move your SIM between phones: the 105 4G takes a nano-SIM, and the 105 (2024) and 106 (2023) take a mini-SIM. If your smartphone uses an eSIM, ask your network for a physical SIM, because these Nokias take a physical card. The alternative is a second SIM-only plan for the Nokia, so the smartphone keeps its own number. Whichever you choose, our guide to how unlocked, SIM-free phones work covers the basics.
What do you lose when you switch to a basic phone?
You lose apps: WhatsApp, maps, banking apps, phone payments, app-based tickets and photos, as none of our Nokias has a camera on its spec sheet. The 2G models have no mobile data either. Most losses have a workaround, but check two things before you switch: how your bank verifies payments, and which accounts send security codes to an app rather than by text.
The table below pairs each loss with a practical workaround.
| What you lose | Practical workaround |
|---|---|
| WhatsApp and group chats | Texts and calls on the Nokia; WhatsApp checked on a smartphone at home |
| Banking app and payment approvals | Ask your bank whether it offers text-message codes or a card reader instead of app approval |
| Two-factor codes for accounts | Switch accounts to text-message codes where offered; the Nokias receive texts normally |
| Maps and travel apps | Plan routes before you leave; carry paper tickets or a printed confirmation |
| Phone payments | Carry your contactless card |
| Camera | A small separate camera, or the smartphone at home |
Two-factor authentication is the trap that catches most switchers. If an account only works with an authenticator app or app approval, keep the smartphone for that account rather than locking yourself out.
The 2G switch-off explained, network by network
The UK is closing 2G after 3G, which is already switched off on all four networks. EE begins closing 2G from May 2029, O2 starts in summer 2029, and Vodafone switches off in spring 2030, in phases. Three has never had 2G. A 2G-only dumb phone stops making calls when its network's 2G closes; a 4G phone carries on only with working 4G Calling.
The table summarises the EE, O2 and Vodafone 2G switch-off plans, as set out in Ofcom's guide to the 2G and 3G switch-off and the operators' own pages, checked on 5 October 2026.
| Network | 2G plan | Nokia 105 (2024) or 106 (2023) | Nokia 105 4G (2024) |
|---|---|---|---|
| EE | Begins closing 2G from May 2029 | Calls and texts until EE's 2G closes | Calls today; after closure only with working 4G Calling |
| O2 | Starts switching off 2G in summer 2029 | Calls and texts until O2's 2G closes | As EE; O2 needs an R15 SIM for 4G Calling |
| Vodafone | Switches off 2G in spring 2030, in phases | Calls and texts until Vodafone's 2G closes | As EE |
| Three, SMARTY, iD Mobile | Three has never had 2G | No normal calls or texts; 999 calls only | Calls only with working 4G Calling, not yet confirmed for our units |
All operators have told the Government 2G will be gone by 2033 at the latest. Under the 2G Switch-off Charter, they announce dates at least three years ahead, though local trials can start earlier with three months' notice. SIM-only brands follow the network they use. On 2G, you also get no mobile data and no government Emergency Alerts.
For the 105 4G, the question is 4G Calling (VoLTE). With 3G gone, a 4G phone makes calls using 4G Calling or falls back to 2G while it exists. EE says 4G phones without 4G Calling will lose service completely when its 2G closes. HMD advertises HD calling on the 105 4G, but no UK network lists this model and ours are international stock, so 4G Calling is unconfirmed on every UK network. Ask our team and your network before ordering: on EE, text HANDSET to 150; Vodafone has an IMEI checker.
Which Nokia is the best dumb phone?
The Nokia 105 4G (2024) is the best dumb phone for most people. It's the only 4G dumb phone of our three, with the biggest screen at 2.4 inches, Bluetooth for headphones, USB-C charging and an FM radio that works without a headset. Choose a 2G model only for EE, O2 or Vodafone and a life of a few years.
Choose the Nokia 105 4G (2024) when you want one phone to last, you'd like to pair compatible Bluetooth earbuds or a car kit, or you might change network. If you're on Three, SMARTY or iD Mobile, ask us first: without working 4G Calling it can't make calls there.
Choose the Nokia 105 (2024), the cheapest Nokia we sell, instead when you're on EE, O2 or Vodafone and want a simple phone for a detox trial, a festival or a spare in the car.
Choose the Nokia 106 (2023) with its long standby instead when you're on one of those networks, want a radio that plays through the speaker, and value HMD's longest quoted standby of the three over screen size.

Is a dumb phone a good first phone for a child or teenager?
It can be, as long as you go in knowing it's the unusual choice. A basic phone covers calls and texts on the way to and from school, with no app store, no social media and, on our Nokias, no camera on the spec sheet. Most children their age will have a smartphone, so talk it through with your child first.
Ofcom's Children and Parents: Media Use and Attitudes Report 2026, published in May 2026, found that 78% of children aged 8 to 17 have their own mobile phone, and 96% of those have a smartphone rather than a basic phone. Ownership rises sharply from 56% of 10-year-olds to 83% of 11-year-olds, which is when the first-phone decision usually lands. The campaign group Smartphone Free Childhood asks families to delay smartphones until 14.
School rules matter too. In England, the Department for Education's guidance on mobile phones in schools became statutory on 29 June 2026, with schools expected to follow it from 1 September 2026; it says schools should be mobile phone-free environments by default. That applies to any phone, basic or smart, so check your school's policy on carrying one. It doesn't apply in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland.
For a child's dumb phone, the 105 4G is the sensible pick because it can outlast the 2G closures, which fall within a typical secondary school career. Save a short list of family contacts, and make sure they know how to call 999.
Is the 4G model worth the extra money?
Usually, yes. The Nokia 105 4G costs £10.00 more than the 105 (2024) (£39.99 − £29.99) and £8.00 more than the 106 (2023) (£39.99 − £31.99). For that, you get a phone that can carry on past the 2G closures if 4G Calling works, plus Bluetooth and a bigger screen.
Every Nokia here costs under £50, so standard delivery is £4.99 on one phone: £44.98 delivered for the 105 4G, or £34.98 for the 105 (2024). Two 105 4G phones for a household detox come to £79.98 (£39.99 × 2), which qualifies for free standard delivery. Special Delivery (next working day) is £9.99.
If you try a dumb phone and find you need apps after all, a low-cost smartphone is the next step; our Galaxy A06 vs A06 5G comparison covers the cheapest Samsung models we stock. Older relatives have different needs again, covered in our guide to simple phones for elderly people.
Both are 2G-only and can't make normal calls on Three, SMARTY or iD Mobile. Prices were checked on 5 October 2026 and can change.
Condition, stock origin and what to check on arrival
All three Nokias are Brand New, sealed, unlocked, international stock. The box printing and contents follow the market the phone was made for, so the charger plug may not be a UK type; a UK USB mains adapter you already own is the easy fix. Our explainer on brand-new international stock covers this in more detail.
For a sealed Nokia, you get a 12-month warranty from The Tech Gadgets, starting on delivery, covering faults that develop in normal use (not accidental or liquid damage), as listed on the product page and in our returns and warranty policy. The warranty policy lists battery defects and reduced capacity as exclusions, but the Consumer Rights Act 30-day right to reject still applies. You also get change-of-mind returns within 30 days if unused and complete (you pay return postage), plus your 14-day right to cancel. Orders placed by 3pm Monday to Friday are dispatched the same day from Manchester; our shipping policy sets out delivery times and costs.
When it arrives, check that the seal is intact, the SIM fits, the battery charges fully, and a test call and text work both ways. On a 105 4G, watch that the 4G symbol stays on during a call; on a Three-based network, check that the call connects at all.
Same-day dispatch from Manchester on weekday orders placed by 3pm. Prices were checked on 5 October 2026 and can change.
Dumb phone FAQ
What is the best dumb phone in the UK?
From our range, the Nokia 105 4G (2024) at £39.99. It's a proper keypad phone with a 2.4-inch screen, Bluetooth, USB-C and an FM radio, and it's the only one of our three that can keep making calls after 2G closes, provided 4G Calling works on your network. The 2G-only Nokia 105 (2024) at £29.99 is the budget choice for EE, O2 or Vodafone users.
Can I get WhatsApp on a Nokia dumb phone?
Not on any of the Nokias we sell. The 105 (2024), 105 4G (2024) and 106 (2023) don't run WhatsApp or app-store apps. If you need WhatsApp, keep it on a smartphone at home and use the Nokia for calls and texts, or choose a smartphone and limit its apps instead.
Will my Nokia dumb phone work on Three or SMARTY?
The 2G-only Nokia 105 (2024) and 106 (2023) can't make normal calls or texts on Three, SMARTY or iD Mobile, because Three has never had a 2G network; only 999 calls can roam onto other networks. The 105 4G needs working 4G Calling there, which isn't yet confirmed for our international units, so ask our team before ordering.
When does the 2G switch-off happen on O2, EE and Vodafone?
EE begins closing its 2G network from May 2029. O2 starts switching off 2G in summer 2029. Vodafone switches off its 2G network in spring 2030, in phases, so some areas may go earlier. Under the Government's 2G Switch-off Charter, local trials need at least three months' notice. A 2G-only phone stops making calls on each network when its 2G closes.
Can I still get bank security codes on a dumb phone?
Often, yes, because all three Nokias receive ordinary text messages. The catch is that some banks and services now prefer app-based approval. Ask your bank whether it offers text-message codes or a card reader, and move your other accounts to text codes where they're offered, before you put the smartphone away.
Do these Nokias have a camera or internet?
No camera appears on the spec sheets for any of the three. The 2G models get no mobile data, so there's no internet. HMD lists a Cloud Apps service (news, weather and video) for the 105 4G, but its UK availability isn't confirmed and it would use mobile data. Treat all three as phones for calls, texts, the radio and Snake.
