Apple lists the A17 Pro with a 6-core CPU and 6-core GPU, the earliest iPhone chip that runs Apple Intelligence. USB-C runs at USB 3 speeds, up to 10Gb/s. Storage starts at 256GB; a used iPhone 15 Pro Max 512GB or 1TB suits heavy 4K filming.

Apple specifies a 48MP Main (ƒ/1.78), a 12MP Ultra Wide (ƒ/2.2) and a 12MP 5x Telephoto (ƒ/2.8), plus a 2x option from the Main sensor. In the iPhone 15 range, only the Pro Max has 5x; the 15 Pro stops at 3x.

Apple rates it at up to 29 hours of video playback when new (25 hours streamed), the longest in the iPhone 15 range. Minimum battery health is 85% on every grade. MagSafe and Qi2 charge at up to 15W.
06Software updates
It runs iOS 27, released on 14 September 2026, with Apple Intelligence. Apple's UK PSTI statement for the iPhone 15 Pro Max gives at least five years of security updates from first supply on 22 September 2023, so at least until September 2028.

Is a refurbished iPhone 15 Pro Max worth buying in 2026?
Yes, for most people who want a large Pro iPhone for less. You get Apple Intelligence, a 5x Telephoto and 120Hz, with security support to at least September 2028. The trade-offs are a used battery, a year less support than the iPhone 16 Pro Max and no Camera Control.
Who it's for
Choose it for zoom photography, sport and long video sessions. For a phone that fits one hand, the iPhone 15 Pro has the same A17 Pro with a 3x lens. For the big screen alone, the iPhone 15 Plus costs less but skips Apple Intelligence.

Refurbished vs second hand iPhone 15 Pro Max: what's the difference?
A refurbished phone has been tested, reset and graded before sale, and comes with a warranty. A private second hand iPhone 15 Pro Max usually has none of that, and may still be linked to an Apple ID.

iPhone 15 Pro Max vs 16 Pro Max: is the newer one worth it?
Only if you want the bigger 6.9-inch screen, Camera Control or longer battery life. Apple rates the 16 Pro Max at 33 hours of video against 29, and it has a 48MP Ultra Wide.
Will it be locked to someone else's Apple ID?
