Galaxy A55 vs A56 Refurbished: What the Extra Money Buys

At Very Good 128GB the refurbished Galaxy A56 5G costs £64 more than the A55 5G. We work out what that buys: mostly 36 more months of Samsung security support, not better cameras.

For most people spending £180–£300 on a refurbished Samsung, the Galaxy A56 5G is the better long-term buy and the Galaxy A55 5G is the better short-term one. At Very Good with 128GB, the A56 5G costs £64.00 more (£243.99 − £179.99, checked 5 October 2026), and most of that money buys software support: Samsung UK's spec page lists A55 5G security updates only until 31 March 2028. Pick the A55 5G if you'll replace your phone by 31 March 2028 (17.8 months from 5 October 2026) or want a microSD slot. Pick the A56 5G if you plan to keep it into the 2030s.

Galaxy A55 5G or A56 5G: the quick decision

  • Best for the A55 5G: a plan that ends by 31 March 2028, a memory card habit, or getting 256GB of storage for less than a 128GB A56. From £179.99 (Very Good, 128GB).
  • Best for the A56 5G: keeping one phone for four or five years, faster 45W wired charging and a lighter, thinner body. £243.99 at Very Good 128GB. A Fair option is listed from £226.99; the grading page doesn't define it, so ask the team about its condition before ordering.
  • Consider an alternative when the update window is your only reason to move up. The refurbished Galaxy A36 5G has a Samsung UK date of 31 March 2031 and costs £211.99 in Very Good condition with 128GB (checked 5 October 2026).
  • Check before buying: the A56 5G has no microSD slot, and neither phone ships with a mains plug.

What does the extra £64 buy with the Galaxy A56 5G?

Mostly time. At Very Good with 128GB, the A56 5G costs £64.00 more than the A55 5G (£243.99 − £179.99). That buys 36.0 more months of Samsung security support on the earlier dates, 45W charging instead of 25W, a brighter screen, a newer chipset and a body 15g lighter. It doesn't buy better rear camera hardware.

Samsung lists an identical rear camera set on both phones, down to the apertures. The A56 5G even gives ground in two places: its selfie camera drops from 32MP to 12MP, and it loses the A55's microSD slot.

So the A56 5G isn't a straight upgrade. It's a trade: expandable storage and a higher-resolution front camera for a longer support window, quicker top-ups and a slimmer build. If the support window matters to you, £64.00 ÷ 3.0 extra years (31 March 2028 to 31 March 2031) is £21.33 for each added year. If you'll replace the phone by March 2028, most of that £64.00 buys a future you won't use.

If you only want to know whether the newer phone holds up on its own, our standalone verdict on the refurbished A56 5G covers that question.

How long will the Galaxy A55 5G and A56 5G get security updates?

Samsung promised the A55 5G four Android upgrades and five years of security updates, and the A56 5G six of each. Its UK spec pages give “valid until” dates of 31 March 2028 for the A55 and 31 March 2032 for the A56. Neither date matches its promise neatly, so this guide does its maths on the earlier date for each phone.

The A55 5G went on sale in March 2024, so five years would suggest about March 2029, yet Samsung UK's page says 31 March 2028. The Tech Gadgets' own refurbished A55 5G listing quotes March 2029, following the promise. The A56 5G runs the other way: six years from March 2025 points to about March 2031, but the UK page says 31 March 2032. Samsung's launch releases don't say when the clock starts, so neither reading can be confirmed.

The earlier dates are therefore 31 March 2028 for the A55 5G and about March 2031 for the A56 5G, which this guide takes as 31 March 2031. From 5 October 2026 that's 17.8 months (1.5 years) against 53.8 months (4.5 years). Samsung's seven-generation figure for the A56 applies to its Enterprise Edition only, so don't assume a refurbished unit qualifies. If it matters, ask the team for the model code; UK Enterprise Edition codes end in EEB.

Dividing each variant's price by the supported years left gives a fair measure of value. Months are counted from 5 October 2026 to the earlier Samsung date.

Refurbished option (from-price, checked 5 Oct 2026) End date used (earlier Samsung date) Months left Years left £ per supported year (price ÷ years)
Galaxy A55 5G, Very Good, 128GB (£179.99) 31 Mar 2028 17.8 1.5 £179.99 ÷ 1.5 = £119.99
Galaxy A55 5G, Very Good, 256GB (£194.99) 31 Mar 2028 17.8 1.5 £194.99 ÷ 1.5 = £129.99
Galaxy A56 5G, Very Good, 128GB (£243.99) 31 Mar 2031 53.8 4.5 £243.99 ÷ 4.5 = £54.22
Galaxy A56 5G, Very Good, 256GB (£286.99) 31 Mar 2031 53.8 4.5 £286.99 ÷ 4.5 = £63.78

A supported year costs less on the A56 5G, and even its 256GB version beats the cheapest A55. If Samsung UK's 31 March 2032 date holds, the A56 gains another 12 months on top. The A55 only comes out ahead if you'd stop using it around spring 2028 anyway.

When security updates end, the phone keeps working, but Samsung's security patches stop, and over time some apps may drop support for older software. For a phone that holds your banking and email, that's the point to plan to move on.

Will you replace it by March 2028, or keep it five years?

If you'll replace the phone by March 2028, the A55 5G gets you there inside Samsung UK's support date for £64.00 less than the A56 5G. Any later and the A55 depends on the unconfirmed five-year promise. If you'll keep it until autumn 2031, the A56 is the only one of the two still close to Samsung's support window, at £48.80 per year (£243.99 ÷ 5.0 years).

Replacing it by March 2028

Keep an A55 5G until March 2028 and it stays inside Samsung UK's date throughout, with £64.00 kept towards whatever replaces it. Stretching to October 2028 looks cheap on paper, at £90.00 per year of ownership (£179.99 ÷ 2.0 years) against £122.00 for the A56 5G (£243.99 ÷ 2.0), but adds 6.2 months that only the unconfirmed promise would cover.

The five-year owner

Keep a phone to October 2031 and the picture flips. An A55 5G would spend 42.1 months outside Samsung's support on its earlier date. The A56 5G misses only the last 6.2 months on its earlier date (31 March 2031), and Samsung UK's 31 March 2032 would cover those too. A five-year plan should also allow for a battery replacement at some point, and typical Galaxy A-series screen and battery repair prices help you budget for that.

The middle ground

A plan that ends between April 2028 and spring 2029 rests entirely on the later, unconfirmed A55 date, so this guide points those buyers to the A56 5G. Keep an A55 to autumn 2029 and it's beyond both readings of its support date.

  • Choose the A55 5G when you're confident you'll replace it by March 2028.
  • Choose the A56 5G instead when your phone will still be in use after March 2028, or you're buying for someone who won't want to switch again soon.

Are the A56 5G's cameras better than the A55 5G's?

Not on paper. Samsung lists the same rear cameras on both: a 50MP f/1.8 main camera with optical image stabilisation, a 12MP f/2.2 ultra-wide and a 5MP f/2.4 macro, with 4K video at 30fps. The one real difference is at the front, and it favours the older phone: 32MP on the A55 5G against 12MP on the A56 5G.

Image processing depends on the chipset and software as well as the sensors, and the A56 has the newer chip. The Tech Gadgets hasn't run camera tests on either model, though, so we won't claim one produces better pictures. What the specifications do settle is that the A56 adds no new lens, no extra zoom and no higher video resolution. Unless you shoot a lot of front-camera video, where the cheaper phone has more pixels to work with, cameras shouldn't decide this purchase.

Charging, battery and weight in daily use

Both phones carry a 5,000mAh battery (typical rating, when new), so charging speed and build are where they differ.

The A56 5G supports 45W wired charging (Super Fast Charge 2.0), while the A55 5G tops out at 25W. Samsung doesn't publish comparable charge times for both phones, so this guide doesn't quote minutes. Refurbished phones from The Tech Gadgets come with a USB-C cable but no plug, so you only get 45W with a charger that supports it. An existing 25W Samsung charger will still work with the A56 5G, just not at its top speed.

The 5,000mAh figure is the manufacturer's rating for a new battery. A refurbished phone's battery health is separate: Like New, Excellent and Very Good phones leave The Tech Gadgets with at least 85%.

The A56 5G is 7.4mm thick and 198g, against 8.2mm and 213g for the A55 5G, so the bigger-screened phone weighs 15g less. Samsung lists metal frames and Gorilla Glass Victus+ for both, and specifies Victus+ on the A56's back as well as its front.

Is a 256GB A55 5G better value than a 128GB A56 5G?

For anyone who needs space, often yes. A Very Good 256GB A55 5G costs £194.99, which is £49.00 less than a Very Good 128GB A56 5G (£243.99 − £194.99). You get double the built-in storage plus a microSD slot that takes cards up to 1TB. The A56 has no card slot, so the storage you buy is all you'll ever have.

The A55's slot is a hybrid: it takes either a second nano-SIM or a microSD card, not both.

Matching that 256GB on the newer phone costs £286.99 for a Very Good A56 5G: £92.00 more than the equivalent A55 (£286.99 − £194.99).

One more 128GB detail: Samsung UK sold the A56 5G to consumers with 256GB only, and the 128GB version appeared in the UK as an Enterprise Edition with 8GB of RAM. The A56 5G option page asks you to message the team to confirm the RAM on 128GB units before you order.

  • Choose the 256GB A55 5G when you store a lot of video or offline media and are happy with the shorter support window.
  • Choose the 128GB A56 5G when most of your photos live in cloud storage and support length matters more than local space.

Screen and speed: small steps rather than a leap

Both screens are 120Hz Super AMOLED panels at 1080 x 2340. Samsung quotes 1,200 nits in high-brightness mode for the A56 5G against 1,000 nits for the A55 5G, which should help outdoors.

Inside, the A56 5G uses Samsung's Exynos 1580, running up to 2.9GHz. The A55 5G uses a chip secondary sources name as the Exynos 1480, which Samsung lists at up to 2.75GHz. Samsung's UK models have 8GB of RAM; confirm it on a 128GB A56 5G before ordering. We haven't benchmarked either phone, so we won't put a figure on the gap.

Other phones to weigh against the A55 5G and A56 5G

The most useful alternative sits between them on price. A refurbished Galaxy A36 5G in Very Good condition with 128GB costs £211.99. That's £32.00 more than the equivalent A55 5G (£211.99 − £179.99) and £32.00 less than the A56 5G (£243.99 − £211.99). Samsung UK lists A36 5G security updates until 31 March 2031, matching its six-year promise, so it gets you most of the A56's runway for less. The trade-offs include an 8MP ultra-wide instead of 12MP and a Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 chip. How the A36 and A56 compare in detail is covered in a separate guide.

Going the other way, an Open Box (Activated) Galaxy A57 5G starts at £278.99 for 128GB, £35.00 more than a Very Good 128GB A56 5G (£278.99 − £243.99). Samsung rates it IP68, lists it at 6.9mm and 179g, and gives a UK “valid until” date of 31 March 2032 that matches its promise. The A57 listings are also international stock, from the UAE or Europe. Samsung UK may not provide manufacturer warranty service for international units, so The Tech Gadgets' own 12-month warranty applies. The box printing and model code may differ, and the box may not include a UK mains plug. Our comparison of an Open Box A57 against a refurbished A56 weighs that step.

Spending more is justified when it buys support years you'll actually use, and not otherwise. To browse everything at once, the full range of Samsung Galaxy phones in stock mixes conditions, so check each listing's condition before you buy.

Samsung Galaxy A56 5G, Refurbished

£243.99 for 128GB in Very Good condition (price checked 5 October 2026). Grades: Like New, Excellent, Very Good. A Fair option is listed from £226.99; the grading page doesn't define it, so ask the team about its condition before ordering.

  • At least 85% battery health at dispatch on Like New, Excellent and Very Good (Fair isn't defined on the grading page)
  • 12-month warranty from The Tech Gadgets (excludes accidental and liquid damage)
  • Same-day dispatch from Manchester on weekday orders placed by 3pm

Who should not buy the A55 5G, and who should skip the A56 5G

Skip the A55 5G if you expect to keep your phone beyond March 2028, if you're buying for a relative who won't want to switch again soon, or if fast charging matters to your routine.

Skip the A56 5G if you rely on a memory card, if your budget stops at about £200, or if you'll replace it by March 2028.

Neither suits you if you need wireless charging (Samsung doesn't list it for either, and secondary sources say neither has it) or a 3.5mm headphone jack, or if you want a phone you can rely on to survive a dunking.

Condition, battery and the checks to do on arrival

The Tech Gadgets grades refurbished phones on cosmetic condition only, after testing and cleaning them in Manchester. Like New has no visible marks. Excellent has light signs of use that are hard to spot at arm's length. Very Good has visible marks on the body, with the screen in good shape. All three come with at least 85% battery health at dispatch, and how The Tech Gadgets defines each grade sets this out in full.

The A55 5G listing offers only those three grades. The A56 5G listing also offers a Fair option, from £226.99 for 128GB. The grading page doesn't define it, so ask the team about its condition before ordering.

Support remaining from 5 October 2026 is 17.8 months for the A55 5G and 53.8 months for the A56 5G, on the earlier Samsung dates.

Very Good to Like New adds £22.00 on a 128GB A55 5G (£201.99 − £179.99) but £48.00 on a 128GB A56 5G (£291.99 − £243.99). With a case on, Very Good is the sensible A56 grade; on the A55, Excellent costs only £10.00 more if marks bother you.

In the box you'll find the phone, a free USB-C charging cable, a free SIM ejector pin and protective packaging. There's no mains plug and no retail box.

On batteries, the warranty policy lists battery defects and reduced capacity as exclusions. Check battery health in the phone's battery settings when it arrives. A faulty battery within 30 days is still covered by your Consumer Rights Act right to reject.

Also check that the model code in Settings › About phone matches the listing, confirm no previous Google or Samsung account is signed in, test calls and data with your own SIM, and inspect the screen on a plain white background. A longer list of checks for any second-hand Samsung is worth working through on day one.

Both phones were rated IP67 when new. That's a design specification, not a promise about a refurbished phone. Seals can age or be disturbed during repair, so don't rely on either surviving water. Liquid damage is excluded from the warranty.

Buying a refurbished A55 5G or A56 5G from The Tech Gadgets

Whichever you choose, it's unlocked for EE, O2, Vodafone, Three and other UK networks, and whether you get 5G depends on your network and plan. It comes with a 12-month warranty from The Tech Gadgets, starting on delivery, covering faults that develop in normal use (not accidental or liquid damage). Both phones are international stock: the model code may differ from UK units, and Samsung UK may not carry out manufacturer warranty repairs on non-UK units, so that warranty is your cover. If you rely on Wi-Fi Calling or 4G Calling (VoLTE) on a particular network, ask the team before ordering. The full warranty and returns terms are in the refund policy.

Change-of-mind returns are accepted within 30 days if the phone is unused and complete (you pay return postage), plus your 14-day right to cancel. So if you order an A56 5G and decide the A55's memory card slot mattered after all, keep the phone unused. Orders placed by 3pm Monday to Friday are dispatched the same day from Manchester, and standard delivery takes 1–3 working days, free over £50.

Galaxy A55 5G vs A56 5G: buyer questions

Is the Galaxy A55 5G still a sensible buy in late 2026?

Yes, for the right owner. It has the same rear cameras, battery rating and IP67 design rating as the A56 5G, plus a microSD slot and a 32MP selfie camera, from £179.99. Its limit is time. Samsung UK lists security updates until 31 March 2028, and even the five-year promise points only to about March 2029. Buy it for a plan that ends by March 2028.

I already own a Galaxy A55 5G. Should I move to an A56 5G?

Only if your current phone's support date is the problem. The A56 5G adds a longer update window, 45W charging, a brighter screen and a lighter body. It doesn't change the rear camera hardware, and it removes the memory card slot. Most A55 owners are better off keeping theirs until nearer its support end.

Why does Samsung show two different end dates for the A55 5G?

Samsung's launch release promised five years of security updates, which from March 2024 suggests about March 2029. Samsung UK's spec page gives a “valid until” date of 31 March 2028. Samsung doesn't say when the five years start, so we can't tell which is right. The Tech Gadgets' A55 listing quotes March 2029. This guide plans around 31 March 2028 because it's the more cautious date.

Will my 25W Samsung charger work with the A56 5G?

Yes, but at the charger's lower rate rather than the phone's 45W maximum. For full speed you need a charger that supports Samsung's Super Fast Charge 2.0 at 45W. The refurbished box includes a USB-C cable but no plug, so budget for a charger if quick top-ups are part of the reason you're choosing the A56.

Which takes better selfies, the A55 5G or the A56 5G?

We haven't tested either phone, so we can't rank image quality. On hardware, the A55 5G has a 32MP front camera and the A56 5G a 12MP one. More megapixels give you more detail to crop into, but they don't guarantee a better-looking picture, because processing counts too and the A56 launched with a newer chip and One UI version.

Why is the A56 5G sold with 128GB when Samsung UK sold it with 256GB?

Samsung UK's consumer models were all 256GB. A 128GB version with 8GB of RAM was sold in the UK as an Enterprise Edition, and 128GB versions also existed in other markets. The Tech Gadgets' listing asks you to message the team to confirm the RAM on 128GB units before you order, and you can ask about the model code at the same time.

What does the Fair grade on the A56 5G listing mean?

A Fair option is listed (from £226.99 for 128GB, checked 5 October 2026), but the grading page doesn't define it, and its 85% battery health minimum is stated for Like New, Excellent and Very Good only. Ask the team about the condition of a Fair unit before ordering. If you'd rather know exactly what you're getting, Very Good is the lowest grade with a published definition.

Verdict: the A56 5G for keepers, the A55 5G for short plans

The Galaxy A56 5G is the better buy for most people reading this. The extra £64.00 at Very Good 128GB buys 36.0 more months of security support on the earlier Samsung dates, and a lower cost per supported year even at 256GB. It also brings faster charging, a brighter screen and a lighter build. It isn't a camera upgrade, and losing the microSD slot is a real cost for some buyers.

The Galaxy A55 5G is the smarter buy when your plan is short. If you'll replace it by March 2028, it covers you for £64.00 less, and a 256GB A55 gives double the storage for £49.00 less than a 128GB A56. Choose the refurbished Galaxy A36 5G instead if long support is the priority and £243.99 is beyond your budget. Choose neither if you need dependable water resistance or wireless charging.
